In the smartphone OS market, there’s Android and iOS; then there’s everyone else. Google’s Android operating system is by far the most popular smartphone operating system in the world, while Apple’s iOS comes in a distant second. But what about industry veterans Microsoft and BlackBerry? According to the latest figures from Gartner, smartphone operating systems from those companies barely made a blip on its radar screen. Sales of smartphones running Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile and BlackBerry OS 10 fell dramatically year-over-year. Microsoft managed to sell just 1.9 million smartphone running Windows Phone during Q2 2016. Compared to the same period last year, when Microsoft sold 8.2 million... Read more...
It looks as though Microsoft is finally removing the limited time price cuts and special offers for its Windows 10 Mobile flagships. After months of temporary price reductions and buy one get one free offers, Microsoft has instituted a permanent price cut for the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. The Lumia 950 was originally priced at $549, and has now been reduced to $399. The range-topping Lumia 950 XL has seen its price fall from $649 to $499. Some would argue that these prices are still too high for smartphones that are running what many see as an also-ran operating system. Microsoft has less than one percent of the global smartphone market and app developers haven’t exactly embraced the Windows... Read more...
Windows 10 has been out for almost a year and Microsoft is likely getting ready to release one of its most important updates. The Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update should start rolling out on August 9th for unlocked Lumias and other Windows Phone devices. Phones sold through carriers are likely to receive the update one week later, beginning Tuesday, August 16th. Microsoft's official Lumia India Twitter account also claimed that the update would occur on August 9th. However, the tweet has since been deleted and the account has responded with vague references to a general Anniversary Update. Why is there a week difference between the unlocked and carrier dates? Carriers like to have extra... Read more...
At long last, Microsoft released its Anniversary Update for Windows 10 yesterday, though not for every platform. The long anticipated update, which is the second major one for Windows 10 since it was released a year ago (we called them Service Packs in the old days), is now available for PCs, Xbox One consoles, and HoloLens, but not for Windows 10 Mobile devices. The Anniversary Update for Windows 10 Mobile is scheduled to arrive August 9. Well, maybe. Microsoft's official Twitter account for Lumia in India posted a tweet indicating the August 9 release date, adding that "if you have any queries, we'll be here for you!" However, the tweet has since been taken down. Questions asking about the... Read more...
Today is supposed to be a big day for Microsoft. It marks the one-year anniversary of the release of Windows 10 and the company is eagerly hoping that its straggling customers will make the last-minute free upgrade to the operating system before the price shoots up to $119 tomorrow. However, Microsoft at the same time is witnessing a funeral of sorts for its smartphone division. The company announced back in May that it would eliminate 1,850 positions in its smartphone hardware business, and this week revealed that it will lay off another 2,850 employees globally over the next 12 months (again, primarily from the smartphone division). These layoffs are in addition to the 19,000 positions that... Read more...
Remember the Elite X3 phablet HP revealed at Computex earlier this year? It looked like a promising handset, albeit one that's based on an operating system that's struggling to grab any kind of meaningful market share (Windows 10 Mobile). The stylish Elite X3 with its large size 5.96-inch QWHD AMOLED display seem poised to make a splash, only HP may be pricing it out of contention. For a brief period, the Elite X3 made an appearance on HP's online storefront in the U.S. where it was listed for—brace yourself—$799! Phew, it's a good thing HP didn't decide to charge a dollar more, because $800 seems awfully high for a Windows 10 Mobile phone. Who can resist at $799, right? Probably a lot of people,... When Microsoft launched Windows 10 globally around this time last year, it had high aspirations for the operating system. Microsoft was counting on swift adoption from consumers and businesses on the PC side and brisk sales of Windows 10 Mobile devices to allow the company to reach over one billion installs by the end of 2018. Windows 10 sprinted out of the starting gate, racking up 75 million installs within the first month of availability. By September 2015, that number climbed to 100 million installs. By the end of 2015, the Windows 10 install base was around 200 million and reached 270 million by the end of March. As of July 15th, 2016, the tally stood at over 350 million. While those numbers... August 2nd is the big day for the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, and it comes just a few days after the free upgrade offer expires for Windows 10. The Anniversary Update will eventually spread throughout Microsoft’s current hardware ecosystem on devices like Lumia smartphones, HoloLens and even the Xbox One. As you might expect, Microsoft can’t possibly start updating all of these devices at the same time, which is why the company announced this week that the update will be coming in waves. There are currently over 350 million devices running some variant of Windows 10, so it makes sense that Microsoft would take a more measured approach when it comes to updating all of those devices to the most... Microsoft is ready to enter the NFC wireless payments arena with its Windows 10 Mobile platform with the official arrival of Microsoft Wallet. We first learned of Microsoft’s intentions earlier this month via leaked internal builds of Windows 10 Mobile, but Microsoft Wallet is now being introduced in the latest Insider Preview builds. Microsoft Wallet is analogous to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay in the mobile payments sector. Given that this feature is still a work in progress, Microsoft only has the backing of VISA and MasterCard at this point in development, in conjunction with eight major banks (including Bank of America, Chase, and US Bank). Microsoft Wallet is currently accepted... Read more...
There was probably a time in the not too distant past when Microsoft thought it would be a viable contender in the mobile handset market by now. That was before reality slapped the Redmond outfit in the face like a stinky trout, and that reality is that the vast majority of consumers are interested in Android and iOS devices. Where the does that leave Microsoft with its Lumia devices? Microsoft isn't giving up, but it is giving handsets away.If you purchase a Lumia 950 XL from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft will toss in an unlocked Lumia 950 handset for free. That's a $549 value, a compelling deal if you and a significant other were already interested in the Lumia 950 XL or Lumia 950. The only... Read more...
If you're looking for an entry-level handset based running Windows 10 Mobile, just head over to the Microsoft Store and grab yourself a Lumia 550. Microsoft has the unlocked handset marked down to $99, compared to its normal selling price of $139, and you also get a prepaid T-Mobile 3-in-1 SIM kit with 40 minutes of airtime with purchase. There's nothing to indicate on the Lumia 550's product page that it comes with a SIM kit for T-Mobile, but it will automatically appear once you add the phone to your cart. That's a $40 value by itself, and provided you're planing to activate with T-Mobile anyway, it works out to $179 worth of product and services for a buck shy of a Benjamin. Not too shabby.The... One of the benefits of NFC (Near Field Communication) technology is the tap to pay feature that's supported on a bunch of mobile devices. Apple has Apple Pay for iOS handsets and wearables, Google has Android Pay, and Samsung is pushing its Samsung Pay as an alternative to both. What about Microsoft? The Redmond software giant will get in on the action when it releases Wallet 2.0.Microsoft has sort of been sitting on the sidelines in the mobile payment arena, but the forthcoming Anniversary Update for Windows 10 Mobile, also known as Redstone 1, will introduce Microsoft's new Wallet 2.0 app, which itself will support NFC Tap to Pay. As of right now, it's a feature that's exclusive to the U.S.... Read more...
Hewlett-Packard officially announced its monstrous Elite X3 phablet back in February, well ahead of expected summer launch date. That long gap between announcement and release was both a curse and blessing — eager Windows Phone fans that wanted to get their hands on the device had to wait months to purchase it, but it also gave HP more time to make some tweaks and add features to the smartphone. We’re happy to inform you that it appears that the production version of the Elite X3 will now come with a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, making it the first Windows 10 Mobile device to come from the factory with the biometric security feature. Interestingly enough, Microsoft just recently announced... Read more...
If you’re a fan of the Windows 10 Mobile operating system, and especially the Lumia 950 XL flagship smartphone (read Marco’s review right here), then you’ll likely want to jump on Microsoft's latest promotion. Microsoft is knocking $150 off the 5.7-inch Lumia 950 XL, which brings its price down to just $499. For those keeping score, this new pricing undercuts the smaller 5.2-inch Lumia 950 by $50. To further sweeten the deal, Microsoft is also throwing in a Display Dock for free — this would normally set you back an additional $99. While the $150 discount and free Display Dock is no doubt an excellent deal, it pales in comparison to last month’s offer that gave customers purchasing... Read more...
We’ve talked extensively about the Windows 10 Anniversary Update that is coming for those running desktop, notebook and convertible PCs. However, the Anniversary Update is also being extended to Windows 10 Mobile as well. And we’re learning today that one of the big features coming to Windows 10 Mobile devices via the Anniversary Update is support for fingerprint readers. This is the first instance of direct software support for fingerprint hardware being embedded into Windows 10 Mobile. Smartphones running iOS and Android have supported fingerprint unlocking for quite some time, so it’s nice to see Microsoft getting onboard with support. There’s, however, one major problem: who exactly is going... Read more...
When it comes to smartphone operating systems, there’s Android and iOS — and then, there’s everybody else. BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile are both in the low single digits (or lower) and have failed to gain any significant traction in the marketplace in recent years. Despite the fact that Windows 10 Mobile is continually evolving and getting better as the year progresses, Microsoft made it clear that mobile isn’t a primary focus at this time. "We're fully committed to that 4-inch screen, there will be a time for it to be our focus, but right now it's part of the family but it's not the core of where I hope to generate developer interest over the next year," said Microsoft's... We guess you could call Windows 10 Microsoft’s “living” operating system, as it has continually evolved since it was first introduced in July 2015. Microsoft has added new features, squashed bugs and generally made Windows 10 a compelling upgrade for those running Windows 7 and Windows 8. Thankfully, the updates to Windows 10 on the PC are also making their way to the smartphone side with constant updates to Windows 10 Mobile, the latest of which is Build 14327. Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 14327 just hit the onramp to the Fast ring, bringing with it a preview of Messaging Everywhere. Messaging Everywhere is similar in concept to Handoff between iOS devices and OS X, allowing you to... Read more...
Microsoft made it clear that now is not the time to focus its efforts on becoming a leader in mobile, but even so, it isn't abandoning the smartphone sector or its Windows 10 Mobile platform. Windows 10 Mobile remains a key part of Microsoft's ongoing strategy to unite devices from different categories with a single platform, and its latest Windows 10 Mobile preview build (14322) underscores that desire by introducing a bunch of feature updates and fixes. The new build is available to Windows Insiders subscribed to receive fast ring updates, which are less polished than builds that get released to the slow ring. After installing build 14322, one of the first things you'll notice is that Microsoft... Read more...
You have a better shot at correctly guessing where Jimmy Hoffa is buried then trying to figure out Microsoft mobile phone strategy. The latter seems to change like the wind, and as it currently stands, there's renewed chatter about Microsoft making a Surface Phone. There was some talk of a Surface Phone back in December of last year. In an episode of Twit, Mary Jo Foley prodded Microsoft's Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossela on the prospect of a Surface Phone, and his response was that Microsoft was working on a "breakthough" handset, one that he described as the "spiritual equivalent" of the company's Surface branded products.Caposella isn't some fly-by-night employee at Microsoft, either.... Windows 10 is an ever-evolving operating system, and its latest iteration was released this week in the form of Insider Preview Build 14291 for both PCs and smartphones. Build 14291 is notable for a number of reasons, with the most prominent one being the addition of extensions support in the Edge browser. Many users lamented the fact that Edge never shipped with extensions support, but Microsoft kept promising that they would arrive in due time. Now, after spilling the beans earlier this week, Edge General Manager Drew DeBruyne explains that Microsoft has put a lot of thought into extensions. “We have built Microsoft Edge so customers can add extensions to the browser with the confidence that... After initially targeting a December launch for Windows 10 Mobile upgrades, Microsoft has announced that it is finally upgrading select Windows Phone 8.1 devices to its latest and greatest mobile operating system. Windows 10 Mobile, as its name implies, is built on the Windows 10 codebase and is Microsoft’s latest attempt to take on smartphone OS leaders Android and iOS. “Consistent with our approach to the Windows 10 PC upgrade, we are focused on delivering a high quality experience for our customers,” writes Windows and Devices Group Core Quality CVP Michael Fortin. “The Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app can be downloaded from the Windows Store to see if the upgrade is available for your device.”... All signs are pointing to Microsoft’s Lumia 650 being the end of the line for the long-running Lumia smartphone family. First ushered in by Nokia, then absorbed by Microsoft, it now looks as though Microsoft will pin its future smartphone hopes on in-house designed “Surface” phones. But before we get to that point, Microsoft has to actually get the Lumia 650 out the door. And today, Microsoft took the first step by putting the smartphone up for preorder in the United States and Canada. Although you can preorder the Lumia 650 today, it won’t actually ship until April 1st. When it comes to the actual smartphone, don’t let its premium finish fool you into thinking that this is a high-end phone.... Read more...
