Microsoft's grand vision for the future is a single ecosystem spread across multiple device categories. That ecosystem is based on Windows 10, which is now installed on more than 200 million active devices around the world. Suffice to say, Windows 10 is off to a fast start, but what about Windows 10 Mobile? Microsoft continues to work on the mobile version of Windows 10, having just released a new preview build (14283) available to Insiders subscribed to the Fast Ring.Unfortunately for owners of older Lumia handsets, this latest build is not for you, at least not yet. Microsoft is restricting access to new mobile builds from its Development Branch to handsets that shipped with Windows 10 Mobile.... Read more...
If you’re running a Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL or a Lumia 550, your smartphone came straight from the factory running Windows 10 Mobile (which is still a work in progress). For those running older Lumias with Windows Phone 8.1, you’ve had to wait patiently for the official release of Windows 10 Mobile or take your chances in the Windows Insider program via test builds. Now, Evan Blass, who is well known to those that follow the mobile industry, is claiming that Microsoft will initiate a wide scale rollout of Windows 10 Mobile later this month. “In an email to partners, Microsoft is now targeting a release this month, to occur after the regular monthly service update,” said Blass. “The rollout is... Hewlett-Packard was almost able to make it to MWC 2016 without its badass Elite x3 leaking for all to see, but it wasn’t meant to be. Late last week, images of the smartphone leaked onto the web along with its full spec sheet. The good news is, the images and the specs were accurate, which means that the Elite x3 is a powerhouse flagship that can easily go toe-to-toe with the best Android and iOS flagships out there. HP’s return to the mobile sector is truly a remarkable one, as the Elite x3 is just a small piece of a truly expansive Windows 10 experience that touches phablet, desktop and laptop use cases. The Elite x3 is a premium phablet device with plastic and metal construction, and has been... Read more...
Microsoft is showing some love to its Windows 10 Mobile operating system as we close out the week, and it comes in the form of a new Development Branch.  Soon after releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14267 for PCs, Microsoft has sent the same build number for Windows 10 Mobile to testers. So what exactly does this mean? Well, it’s the first Redstone release to grace Windows 10 Mobile — for those keeping score, Redstone is the next major update to the Windows 10 platform. Besides moving Windows Insiders over to a new Development Branch with Build 14267, Microsoft has also made a few changes to the how updates will be distributed to testers. First, from this point forward, Windows... Read more...
"Gentleman, you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.” We first heard word that Hewlett-Packard was looking to get back into the smartphone game with a Windows 10 Mobile device back in late December. Codenamed “Falcon,” we were only greeted with some GFXBench results and accompanying specs for the device and little more. However, a Hungarian site has actually uncovered images of HP’s Windows 10 Mobile smartphone prototype, and it’s called the Elite X3. We must say, this is one sleek looking device thanks to its plastic and metal construction and the groovy speaker cutouts below the massive display. More importantly, if you thought that the Lumia 950 XL was a premium Windows 10 Mobile,... Read more...
We’ve been talking about the Lumia 650 for months, but Microsoft has officially spilled the beans on its latest low-end smartphone. If previous reports are accurate, this will be the last smartphone to wear Lumia branding, and unfortunately, the storied phone line is going out with a whimper instead of a bang. Microsoft is targeting the Lumia 650 at business customers and has actually infused the device with a somewhat higher quality build than the flagship Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. The smartphone features a diamond cut and anodized aluminum frame, measures in at just 6.9mm thick and weighs in at a feathery 4.3 ounces. “This really is a beautiful phone. We’ve paid attention to every detail,... Read more...
Ever since Windows 10 was widely released to testers early last year, the company has provided Windows Insiders with two “rings” in which to test the operating system. The Fast ring has essentially been for testers that like to be on the bleeding edge and don’t mind putting up with some glaring bugs that may crop up from time to time. The Slow ring, on the other hand, typically features more stable builds while still giving testers the ability to preview new updates and features. Today, Microsoft is announcing a third ring, the Release Preview, which allows users to stay on their current Windows 10 branch (in this case, 10586) while still “[Receiving] early access to updates, application updates,... We were under the impression that the Alcatel’s latest foray into the Windows 10 Mobile market would arrive last month, but it simply wasn’t meant to be. Thankfully, those that were looking forward to the budget smartphone didn’t have long to wait — the OneTouch Fierce XL is now available direct from T-Mobile. The OneTouch Fierce XL is unlikely to get your pulse racing if you’re into fast, feature-packed smartphones. Alcatel’s Windows 10 Mobile is strictly for the low-end of the smartphone market as witnessed by the following specs: 1.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 with 2GB RAM 16GB onboard storage microSD expansion up to 32GB 5.5-inch 720p display 8MP rear camera 2MP selfie camera 2500mAh battery... The leaks keep happening, yet Microsoft still isn’t ready to “officially” lift the veil on its latest mid-range Windows 10 Mobile smartphone: the Lumia 650. Just a few days ago, famed smartphone leaker Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) provided a press render showcasing the front of the device. Today, a number of new press renders have surfaced showing the Lumia 650 from numerous angles, although none show the device from the rear. The renders clearly show off the smartphone’s thin 7.27mm metal-rimmed frame, which should give it a more premium feel than the much more expensive Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. As we’ve previously reproved, the Lumia 650 is spec’d as follows: 5-inch 720p AMOLED displayQuad-core... Read more...
All signs point to Microsoft putting Lumia brand out to pasture following the release of the Lumia 650 later this month. Microsoft’s flagship Windows 10 Mobile smartphone duties will reportedly be transferred over to the Surface team, which has built quite a reputation for itself with swanky hardware like the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book. In the mean time, we’ve got a fresh entry into the Windows 10 Mobile field, and it comes from an unlikely source. The VAIO brand is back with a vengeance, and it is entering the phone business with… the Phone Biz. We’re still scratching out heads as to why VAIO went with Windows 10 Mobile, which is treading water in the low single-digits in global market share,... Read more...
Windows 10 users who are in the Insider Preview program and happen to be games (which is likely a big portion of the audience) were disappointed to learn that the the most recently released build was an absolute mess for gaming. An issue with the graphics stack caused crashing issues for many popular PC games including Fallout 4, Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3. Thankfully, Microsoft has been working around the clock to ease the pain of Windows Insiders and has fixed the graphics stack bug with the release of Windows 10 Build 14251. Considering that previous preview build was numbered 11102, that is a pretty huge leap. Microsoft’s Gabe Aul took to the Windows Blog to explain the large difference... Read more...
At this point, it has to be tough for Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile users. Besides the fact that Microsoft's smartphone operating system has global market share in the low single-digits, its app ecosystem isn’t nearly as healthy as what’s available on iOS or Android. And even when Microsoft develops interesting smartphone apps that people might enjoy, it often introduces them to Android or iOS first instead of Windows 10 Mobile — if at all. Such is the case with new Word Flow keyboard for iOS, which is currently undergoing internal testing at Microsoft and in a closed beta via the Windows Insider program. "Word Flow keyboard has long been one of the highly praised features on Windows Phone... Read more...
Word on the street is that Microsoft is ready to bury its Lumia brand and move in a different direction with Windows 10 Mobile smartphones developed by its Surface hardware team. Microsoft for all intents and purposes confirmed the development, with Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossela stating, that the phone would be the “spiritual equivalent” of its Surface tablets. The Redmond software and hardware giant definitely has something new in the works, as Microsoft China uploaded a video this week to highlight the Continuum functionality found within supported Windows 10 Mobile smartphones. In the description field for the video were references to Microsoft’s Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL flagships... Read more...
Could it be the end of the line for Microsoft’s (and formerly Nokia’s) Lumia brand of smartphones? According to a new report, the upcoming Lumia 650 will be the last smartphone to wear the Lumia branding. The Lumia 650 will reportedly be unveiled on February 1st, and there will likely be little fanfare whatsoever for what could be the end of the Lumia line. Microsoft is expected to announce the smartphone via low-key blog posting, which sounds about right considering that the Lumia 650 doesn’t look like much of an improvement over last year’s Lumia 640.Microsoft Lumia 650 [Image Source: Evan Blass] The rumored specs of the Lumia 650 (RM-1152) include: 5-inch 720p displayQuad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon... Microsoft is porting yet another app over to iOS, this latest one called Word Flow, a smartphone keyboard app that's similar to Swype. Word Flow allows you to type without lifting your finger off of the keyboard -- you start by touching the first letter in the word you want to type an then slide your finger to each subsequent one. It's the latest app or service to make the migration over to a competing platform. This has been part of Microsoft's strategy for quite some time now, one that it's ramped up rather aggressively since introducing Windows 10. You can find services like Microsoft's Cortana digital assistant and Office on both Android and iOS, and while Word Flow isn't as big as either... Read more...
It appears that the a wide-scale rollout of Windows 10 Mobile in the United States can’t be too away. We reported earlier this week that T-Mobile has started pushing the update to select Lumia smartphones in Poland, while the the wireless carrier is also prepping a German rollout in the coming weeks. Today, Windows Phone 8.1 users in Latin America are reporting that their Lumia 535 smartphones are being upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile — more specifically, they are being updated to Build 10586.39 courtesy of the CV LTA ROM. While it’s great news that Microsoft and its wireless partners are showing some love to various countries around the world with regards to Windows 10 Mobile upgrades, we’re certain... Read more...
Poland may be the perennial butt of jokes, but one thing is certain: its citizens are sometimes the very first to get fresh releases of operating systems. When LG starting rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop and Android 6.0 Marshmallow to its smartphones, it first did so in Poland. Today, we’re learning that T-Mobile users in Poland are the first to to receive the over-the-air upgrade to the consumer version of Windows 10 Mobile. For now, the Windows 10 Mobile update is limited to Lumia 640 smartphones currently running Windows Phone 8.1 on T-Mobile’s wireless network. Lumia 640 customers are first seeing an update that upgrades the device firmware to version 02177.00000.15184.36002. Once that update... Read more...
Just before Christmas, Microsoft Chief Marketing Officer Chris Capossela seemingly confirmed the existence of a new mid-range smartphone: the Lumia 650. Capossela was asked by Microsoft watchers Mary Jo Foley and Paul Thurrott when the [until this point] unannounced product would be released. Instead of avoiding the question altogether, Capossela replied that no definite release date had been pinned for the Lumia 650. Now, notorious gadget leaker Evan Blass has managed to get his hands on an image of a Lumia 650 engineering prototype. The leaked image confirms at least one rumored aspect of the Lumia 650’s design — it has a metal rim around the perimeter of the smartphone, which oddly enough... Read more...
Before Microsoft can complete its plan to rule the world with Windows 10, it will have to figure out how to tackle the smartphone market, one that's largely eluded the Redmond outfit over the years. The latest data from market research firm comScore has Microsoft clinging to a less than 3 percent share of the smartphone sector in the U.S.Specifically, 2.8 percent of smartphones in the U.S. are based on a Windows OS, down a hair from 2.9 percent in the previous quarter. That's still better than BlackBerry, which claims a scant 1 percent, but far removed from Apple at 43.1 percent and Android at 53.1 percent, the two of which combine for a 96.2 percent share of the market. Some perspective is needed.... As we closed out 2015, we brought you news that T-Mobile was willing to give Windows 10 Mobile a chance even though Microsoft didn’t extend an olive branch by offering it the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL flagships. Unfortunately for those hoping that T-Mobile would bring a flagship-class Windows 10 Mobile smartphone to the table, the third-place wireless carrier is instead going with a budget device from Alcatel. As we reported last week, the OneTouch Fierce XL likely won’t win over any T-Mobile customers that had their hearts set on a Lumia 950, but its off-contract pricing is likely to be very compelling (the Android version of the smartphone is available on MetroPCS for $70 after rebate). The... Read more...
Microsoft is hoping to court a new legion of smartphone users with its Windows 10 Mobile operating system. Unfortunately for Microsoft, a number of missteps is threatening to derail what otherwise is shaping up to be a credible alternative to the market dominant Android and still popular iOS smartphone platforms. For starters, Microsoft promised that it would deliver the RTM build of Windows 10 Mobile for Lumia devices in December. However, once December rolled around, Microsoft stated that the release of Windows 10 Mobile for “legacy” devices would be delayed until 2016. So, we wait. Perhaps more damning is the relatively low-key launch of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL smartphones, which are... Read more...
A few months ago, T-Mobile CEO John Legere pitched a fit over AT&T exclusivity for the Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL Windows 10 Mobile flagship smartphones. T-Mobile customers can still purchase both smartphones and use them on T-Mobile’s network, but they have to purchase them off-contract at full price direct from Microsoft to do so. They can’t be purchased using T-Mobile’s financed installment plans. But despite the fact that Microsoft seems to be making a big mistake by limiting its flagship smartphones to AT&T, T-Mobile hasn’t given up entirely on Windows 10 Mobile. Unfortunately, T-Mobile’s first foray into Windows 10 Mobile won’t be a high-end device. Instead, we’re looking... Read more...
