Market analysis firm Jon Peddie Research has released its report on graphic processor sales in the third quarter. According to the data, the strong Q2 rebound was no one-time event; GPU sales continued to climb into Q3 and are expected to rise further in Q4. Intel, AMD, SiS, and VIA all saw their market share increase, with AMD leading the pack. Matrox was the sole exception; its share of the GPU market has dropped to 0.0 percent according to JPR.AMD picked up 1.4 percentage points of market share; Intel grew its share by 1.6 percentage points, and NVIDIA managed to lose 4.3 percent market share (down to 24.9 percent from 29.2 percent). Nevertheless, Team Green still shipped slightly more GPUs... Read more...
Jon Peddie Research released its quarterly report on the state of the GPU market today and optimistically forecasts a strong third quarter. The second quarter bucked seasonal trends; sales were up a massive 31.29 percent. That's in contrast to what we typically see in Q2; over the past eight years sales have usually fallen slightly from Q1-Q2, not shot up. Of the big three, Intel and AMD saw their GPU shipments and market shares increase, while NVIDIA's own market share took a 0.5 percent hit. Shipments at all three companies grew by 35.2 percent, 41.5 percent, and 23.6 percent respectively. Every bit as bad an idea as it looks. All three of the "other" GPU manufacturers (Matrox, SiS, S3/VIA)... Read more...
As we've said before, you need to be careful what you post on social networking sites like Facebook. It can get you fired, or in this case, expose the personal details of the new head of the U.K.'s MI6. And the culprit? His own wife. Sir John Sawers will take over as chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (or MI60 in November. However, his wife, Lady Shelley Sawers posted details about their personal lives on Facebook. Not just that, she had almost no privacy protections on their account. Besides the obvious question of: why would someone in such a sensitive position have a Facebook account, there is the obvious question of why someone in such a sensitive position not have privacy controls... Here at the HotHardware labs, we like to make use of SiSoftware's Sandra benchmarks for quick and dirty measurements on relative performance of a product versus another in its class.  While the benchmark suite is virtually all synthetic testing, we've found that results and measurements generally scale pretty well with real-world performance in many cases.  Regardless, this release nearly sneaked past us yesterday but it appears SiSoftware has launched Sandra 2009 and this time, they've stepped up to 3D graphics and GPGPU benchmarking as well. London, UK, September 1st 2008 - We are pleased to launch SiSoftware Sandra 2009, the latest version... Read more...

It's not very often that we see innovation in a PC chassis.  Of course, just about every other component in a typical PC is enhanced or somehow improved on a regular basis, but chassis haven't really changed all that much in the last few years.  Aesthetically they have gotten more pleasing and diverse, new materials are being used, and there have been some acoustic improvements mostly due to the use of larger, low-RPM fans.  However, take away the fans and fascias and underneath most chassis are pretty similar.  In fact, it's not uncommon for the same chassis to be sold as numerous different models, just with different bezels on the front. The folks at Cooler Master thouggh... Just in case you're the type who likes to jump right down to the news, we're writing to let you all know that we have just posted a new article here at HotHardware in which we evaluate Cooler Master's innovative COSMOS S chassis.  Like the original COSMOS, the new S variant has what appear to be bar-like handles along both sides of its top and bottom edges.  And its general shape is reminiscent of the original COSMOS as well.  The COSMOS S, however, has a new titanium and glossy black finish that really stands out and its inputs and ventilation scheme are all somewhat different.  Click the link below and check it out...Cooler Master COSMOS S Chassis... The answer of course is Intel's upcoming Itanium brand CPU codenamed Tukwila. While we tend to focus a lot of our attention on the desktop market, we cannot help but be impressed by server CPUs when we hear figures like 2 billion transistors or 30 MB of on-die cache that make up a good portion of those transistors.  “The new Itanium processor will be built on the company’s 65-nanometer manufacturing process and will also be one of the first Intel chips to use the company’s QuickPath interconnect technology—an integrated memory controller. (Advanced Micro Devices already uses an integrated memory controller with its x86 Opteron processors.)”Perhaps the most overlooked benefit of using Intel's... Read more...
At the time of NVIDIA's 3-Way SLI launch, we were unable to bring you Crysis benchmark numbers that we felt comfortable with.  This was partly an NVIDIA driver issue and also because we were waiting on a patch from Crytek that would allow for more efficient SLI scaling overall.  With the release of the Cyrsis 1.1 patch, we now have a stable, scalable platform with which to test on....   From the article - "At high quality settings and 1920X1200 resolution, the GeForce 8800 Ultra SLI setup is about 50% faster than a single card.  Three GeForce 8800 Ultras in 3-Way SLI on the other hand, offer a 33% increase in performance over a pair of cards in SLI mode... It's Christmas Day. What the heck are you doing? Fire up Crysis and install this new Christmas present from them: an official Crysis Tournament Mappack. Thing is, Santa didn't drop it down the chimney and it's not on the Crytek site (at least, it's not easy to find). In a way that's probably good: anyone else annoyed at how you have to enter your birthdate every single time you go there?Of course we have prepared a little Christmas present for you as well. Within the past few months and weeks we haven't been working on patches, SDK and Linux Server only, but also our Level Designers have been very active. Thus we are happy to announce you the release of the official "Crysis Tournament Mappack".Some... Read more...
The team at InCrysis had a bit of a heart to heart with Crytek CEO, Cevat Yerli and NVIDIA's VP of Content Relations, Roy Taylor, in sort of a state-of-the-nation fashoin that offers a bit of insight as to what's going on with game play, the engine itself and performance optimizations that both companies are working hard on.  There is also talk of the forthcoming patch for the game that was promised long ago but now has been projected for release by Cevat in the "7 - 14 day" range.  There are also a lot of great tid-bits of information regarding the game and how it taxes your hardware, in this interview, so its definitely a worthy read."MadBoris: Where does the specific... It's not like you can see it by looking at the case of iPod or PC, but without the transistor, we would have none of the "magic" electronic devices we now know and cannot live without.Shockley had continued his semiconductor work, and in 1948 patented the modern junction transistor. Three years later, Bell Labs demonstrated part number M1752, though it was apparently produced only in prototype quantities. The modern transistor was born. But it didn't immediately revolutionize the electronics industry, which continued its love affair with tubes. It wasn't till 1956 that Japan's ETL Mark 3, probably the first transistorized computer, appeared, but it used 130 point-contact transistors and wasn't... Read more...
Due to popular demand, we've gone ahead and updated our GeForce 8800 GT launch article with a full suite of Crysis benchmark numbers and even a few screen shots to dress it up a bit.  The game engine alone with this upcoming release will live up to the hype that surrounds it.  Word is Crysis has gone gold and will be on sale in stores 11/16.  If you're one generation behind in graphics cards, now might be a good time to consider the new GeForce 8800 GT or if you can stand it, perhaps wait for its successor, which is rumored to hit some time in early '08.  From the article, as they say...    Crytek's Crysis in all it's glory...   Even with our image quality...
