During a livestreamed launch event today, ASUS formally introduced the world to its ROG Phone 5, the latest version of its excellent gaming phone series. For this round, ASUS once again upped the ante, this time with several key upgrades, including up to a generous 18GB of LPDDR5 RAM and an even faster 144Hz refresh rate display. Some of you reading this might be thinking the idea of a 'gaming phone' is little more than a gimmick. And to be fair, it sometimes can be, depending on the specific phone being talking about. According to ASUS, the ROG Phone 5 will launch this week, but the company has been mum on the smartphone's official specifications. However, SK hynix has spilled the beans early on at least one SKU for the smartphone. In a press release issued this morning, SK hynix touted that it has begun mass production of 18GB LPDDR5 for mobile applications. According to the company, the memory will run at 6,400Mbps, which is 20 percent faster than its previous LPDDR5 modules.  However, the big reveal came when SK hynix stated that the first 18GB LPDDR5 modules would land in the "upcoming 'Republic of Gamers (ROG) 5' gaming smartphone," which is something that ASUS hasn't even announced at... In our experience, the ROG Phone family from ASUS has transcended gimmicky features and continuously delivered a true gaming-oriented experience, both in the hardware and software, and through an ecosystem of supplementary accessories (like a dual-screen dock). So, we are pretty excited to learn ASUS is getting ready to launch the ROG Phone 5 next month. What the heck happened to the ROG Phone 4? Is it hanging out with Leisure Suit Larry 4: The Missing Floppies? Not exactly—the number "4" is considered unlucky in some East Asian cultures, sort of how the number "13" is viewed as unlucky in the US (and especially Friday the 13th).
