One of the only ways to get a really good deal on a smartphone these days is to switch carriers. If you are ready to switch to a new carrier and want to give Google Fi a try, Google has a smoking-good deal going on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL today only. The deal will save you 50% off the purchase price. The half-off discount is good on Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL smartphones that are purchased April 22, 2019, between 12:00 AM PT and 11:59 PM PT. One bit of good news for those who are already using Google Fi is that current customers can get the discount as well. Typically smartphone discounts this significant are only for new customers. Buyers are required to activate the smartphone within 30 days... Read more...
If you're in the market for one of the best smartphones that we tested during 2018, now might be the time to strike while the iron is hot. The Google Store is currently discounting both the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL by $150 each with no strings attached. That means that you can pick up the Pixel 3 for $649 instead of its regular MSRP of $799, while the Pixel 3 XL will set you back just $749 (versus an MSRP of $899). We should mention that these are the prices that you will pay upfront for a carrier unlocked device, so you won't have to deal with annoying carrier locks or messy and time-consuming monthly bill credits. But if you don't mind going through the above-mentioned hoops, you... Read more...
In the lead up to last year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, Google offered Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL owners Play Store credits. Fast forward to now and it appears Google is once again gifting some Pixel 3 and Pixel XL owners a $2 credit (or more) in the Play Store that can be redeemed on any app or game that costs more than $2 (or the credit amount). It's not clear if every Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL owner is seeing this promo, or if there some set criteria to qualify. If you own one of Google's flagship phones, head over to the Play Store on your handset and select the 'For You' tab, then scroll down. "Congrats on your $2 to spend on any app for game," the message reads. "$2 credit an app or... Read more...
It has been rumored that Google is prepping mid-range versions of its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL handsets, which will be called Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 3 Lite XL. These would be more affordable variants than their flagship brethren, with lower end hardware. Surprisingly, however, a supposedly leaked benchmark reveals that the Pixel 3 Lite XL might actually have more RAM than the Pixel 3 XL. There is a new database entry over at Geekbench that points to the upcoming device. It's listed as a "Foxconn Pixel 3 XL" with an "SDM710" chipset, otherwise known as Qualcomm's Snapdragon 710 system-on-chip (SoC), clocked at 1.71GHz. The listing also shows the phone as having 6GB of system RAM. We're a bit skeptical... Read more...
We've heard rumors of Lite versions of the Pixel 3 family in the past, and now we're receiving even more chatter regarding the alleged smartphones. According to the new report, the smartphones will be ready for a Spring 2019 launch and will be exclusive to Verizon, America's largest wireless carrier. This is definitely a big departure for Google which has exclusively focused on flagship Android smartphones for the past three generations (Pixel, Pixel 2, Pixel 3). The last time that the company offered a true mid-range option was with the Nexus 5X, which debuted way back in the fall of 2015. Alleged Google Pixel 3 Lite Given that these will be lower-priced entries into the Pixel family, you won't... Read more...
Last month a rather strange issue turned up with the Google Pixel 3 family of smartphones that caused the device to produce a fatal error in third-party camera apps. That meant that if you tried to snap a photo via Snapchat, for instance, you would be greeted with a camera error message and a camera that wouldn't work again until the phone was rebooted. Needless to say, this has been an annoying issue for Pixel 3 users. Some affected owners are claiming that the December Pixel 3 update has fixed the fatal camera error. Pixel 3 users have posted about their successes with the December update in this primary support thread for the issue, however, there are some reporting that the... Read more...
If you missed out on grabbing a discounted Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL during Black Friday or Cyber Monday, there's no need to fret, Google has marked both of its flagship phones down once again. The smaller Pixel 3 is selling for $699 in the Google Store, down $100 from its MSRP, and the Pixel 3 XL now starts at $749, down $150 from its MSRP. Those are not insignificant discounts, even if the discounts aren't quite as deep this time. They're also still not cheap handsets, even with the savings, though Google offers a finance option to spread the cost out over time. Here is how the upfront and financed pricing breaks down, depending on which model and storage configuration you choose: Pixel 3 w/ 64GB:... Read more...
Verizon has confirmed that it will be rolling out Universal Profile RCS for the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL tomorrow, December 6, 2018. Before this confirmation, the Universal Profile RCS service wasn't expected until early next year. This Universal Profile is meant to ensure carrier interoperability and brings several cool new features. Verizon is referring to Universal Profile RCS as chat and enhanced messaging. Google's Messages app will be where users of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will need to go to access the new functions. Verizon employees posted a full list of features for the service on Reddit. The features of Universal Profile RCS include the ability to create messages 8,000 characters... Read more...
Google's Pixel 3 smartphones have been out for a while now; we reviewed them back at launch in October. Since that launch, the smartphone has had more than a few issues that have caused owners problems. One issue, which wasn't a bug but an intentional design choice, was that the Pixel 3 devices could only charge wirelessly at 10W with approved accessories and only approved accessory was Google's Pixel Stand at launch. The second issue was a bug that prevented some photos from saving correctly, Google acknowledged that bug and promised a fix. Now, another problem has reared its head for owners of the Pixel 3, and this one has to do with charging and potential battery safety. Reports indicate that... Read more...
Google's Pixel 3 family was one of the most anticipated smartphone launches of 2018, and as we showed in our hands-on review, it's been worth the wait. However, if you weren't one of the early birds first out of the gate to purchase Google's new Android Pie flagships, there's a new deal going on at Best Buy that might be worth your attention. If you purchase a Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL to activate on the Verizon Wireless network at Best Buy, you'll receive a free Nest Cam Indoor Security Camera. There aren't any promotional codes or silly mail-in rebates to mess with; simply add either the Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL to your cart, and the Nest Cam will be added automatically. For those keeping... The notch isn’t the most beloved smartphone feature in the world; in fact, many people outright hate the notch. With manufacturers like Apple and others working to make screens as large as possible -- while still finding a place for the front speaker, camera, and sensors -- the notch has been a necessity. However, notch haters won't like the new flaw that some Pixel 3 XL owners have reported. The bizarre Google Pixel 3 XL bug gives the smartphone an extra notch. This second notch has turned up on the right side of the screen, and it's clear that the bug has reproduced the top of the smartphone directly on the right upper half of the device. The notch is accompanied by rounded corners that... Read more...
Google has made a big deal about computational photography with its Pixel family of smartphones. Through a use of machine learning which can identify certain patterns in pictures, and with the help of the Pixel Visual Core (which was introduced on the Pixel 2 family of smartphones), Google is able to produce some of the best photos that we've seen in modern smartphones -- even while only having a single rear camera compared to two or three in other flagship devices. Google's latest addition to its Pixel 3/Pixel 3 XL computational photography arsenal is Night Sight, which allows for incredibly detailed pictures to be captured in low-light situations (without the aid of a flash). Although... Read more...
The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones launched earlier this month and we covered them both extensively in our full review. The Pixel 3 devices have already encountered some issues already including a software bug that causes images to fail to save as expected. Another tidbit has surfaced that has to do with wireless charging on the Pixel 3 smartphones and using third-party accessories. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will only wirelessly charge at 10W on the Pixel Stand; if you use a third-party wireless charger, the smartphones will charge at just 5W. Half power wireless charging isn't an issue with third-party chargers and the Pixel 3; rather it's by design from Google. The the charging... Read more...
Over the weekend we reported on a rather peculiar bug that was affecting Pixel 3/Pixel 3 XL users in addition to older Pixel and Nexus smartphones. The heart of the issue is that capturing a photo with the Google Camera app sometimes results in the photo not actually saving to the device. The problem was eventually traced to a bug in HDR processing for photographs. Due to a software glitch, if a picture was taken and that the camera app was immediately exited -- before HDR processing could completely finish -- to perform another task on your phone, the photo would not save. For those that were hoping to capture a special moment or a once-in-a-lifetime event, this could be quite infuriating... Read more...
