And here we were thinking that Sony's PlayStation 3 had something special going on. Merely 24 hours after NVIDIA announced that its PhysX technology would be coming over to the PS3, the company has gone and essentially announced the very same thing for the Wii. Thanks to a new tools and middleware license agreement between NVIDIA and Sony, game developers may find the PlayStation 3 to be a more attractive platform. As a result of the agreement, registered PS3 developers will now have access to the NVIDIA PhysX technology software development kit (SDK). The SDK will be a free download for use on the SCEI Developer Network. The NVIDIA PhysX SDK gives developers, animators, level designers, and artists creative control over character and object physical interactions. Although we can't disclose all of the details regarding NVIDIA's upcoming dual-GPU powered GeForce GTX 295 just yet, we do have some juicy information regarding the card and its proposed specifications that we can share with you today.We all knew that NVIDIA wasn't sitting idle since the initial release of AMD's popular ATI Radeon HD 4800 series of products. Ever since NVIDIA acquired AGEIA and assimilated their PhysX IP, there has been an outcry for more triple-A game titles that fully utilize the technology. Currently there are only a handful of popular, shipping titles that take full advantage of PhysX, but NVIDIA's developer relations team seems to have been pushing hard and the company has been able to make a number of interesting announcement regarding PhysX support in some highly anticipated, upcoming games. It was about a month ago that NVIDIA released drivers that included PhysX support, leading to multiple allegations of cheating.  Why?  Well, quite naturally the CPU physics test (3DMark Vantage) shows much higher results with PhysX in the mix, as the CPU load moves greatly to the PPU.According to a forum post, Futuremark hasn't been asleep, and has decided any such results will be deemed invalid and removed. I've changed (sic) a couple of e-mails between Futuremark CEO Tero Sarkkinen who quickly commented current confusing situation in ORB and Hall of Fame. NVIDIA has been generating a lot of buzz as of late with all of the news regarding their PhysX implementation on GeForce 9800 and GTX 200 series GPUs.  An interesting, and related, tid-bit arrived in our in-box this morning that's sure to illicit some curious responses, and wouldn't you know it, it has to do with ATI-accelerated PhysX... Unfortunately, we don't have many details regarding the screenshot above.  What it is supposed to show is PhysX being accelerated on a Radeon HD 3800 GPU (reportedly a 3850).  The folks that developed the infamous "SLI Patch" are working on this little app that ports NVIDIA's PhysX to ATI GPUs. You'll recall last week NVIDIA announced that its 177.39 drivers would provide PhysX support on the GeForce 9800 GTX, 9800 GTX+, and GTX 260/280 cards. You'll also probably recall the big dust-up over whether or not NVIDIA was cheating in terms of optimizations for various benchmarks. Whether or not you believe that (read their response here), for end users, the real question is: "where are the drivers? I want to try them." NVIDIA has posted beta versions of 177.39 on its site. On Thursday, the same day that AMD unveiled - early - its 4800 series of cards (because some etailers were already selling the card), NVIDIA decided it just had to unveil its own new card, as well as some other good news.NVIDIA's new card is the GeForce 9800 GTX+ GPU, an overclocked 9800 GTX, but really the 55nm refresh of the G92. NVIDIA increased default clock/shader speeds: from 675MHz to 738MHz and from 1688MHz to 1836MHz respectively. Memory speeds for this card will be 1100MHz, similar to the existing 9800 GTX. The MSRP will be $229, and it will hit store shelves in mid-July. At the same time the 9800 GTX's price will be dropped to $199, matching AMD's 4850 MSRP.          ... Read more...
And this is why analyst calls, while often dry, are a wealth of information.  In their Q4 2008 post-results conference call, NVIDIA clarified its AGEIA plans.Huang revealed that Nvidia's strategy is to take the PhysX engine and port it onto CUDA. For those not in the know, CUDA stands for Compute Unified Device Architecture, and it's a C-like application programming interface Nvidia developed to let programmers write general-purpose applications that can run on GPUs. A few days ago Ageia announced a mobile physics processor.  At the time we speculated that a good first match for it would be one of the laptops in Dell's lineup.  It looks like we were right. Though apparently as yet unofficial, we received word today from sources at Dell that the company will soon begin to offer Ageia's PhysX dedicated physics processor in the laptop line. Though our source could not tell us specifically which among Dell's lappies will be getting the upgrade, we think it's safe to assume it will be the XPS M1710, the company's 17-inch flagship gaming model. The AGEIA PhysX hardware accelerator has been a solution in search of a program.  Meaning, there's just not enough software available to really make it worthwhile.  That said, they have announced a mobile version for notebooks. Today, the company announced the PhysX 100M mobile processor, aimed at adding hardware-accelerated physics to high-end desktop replacement gaming notebooks. According to the press release, this new mobile part is designed to operate, "with power dissipation of nearly 10W under gameplay conditions." ChileHardware has put together an interview with the CEO of AGEIA, Manju Hedge, regarding current and long-term plans for the company's PhysX PPU.  It looks like AGIEA could be jumping on the general purpose bandwagon, ala GPGPU, and had plans to support multiple PPUs working in parallel. Fudo over at The Inquirer reports that AGEIA's latest drivers have been found to reference system configurations which utilize multiple PhysX discrete physics cards. A key aspect of the driver called the Hardware Scene Manager (HSM) now uses compartments allowing for the presence of multiple PhysX cards. On the surface, it sounds as though Physics is following Graphics as we "could" have a scenario much like SLI and Crossfire where multiple cards can be used to increase performance. However, looking at the lack of any physics-rich titles at this time it is hard enough to justify the use of a single PhysX card let alone multiple cards.
