NVIDIA's APEX Opens 'Physics Creation Pipeline'

After months and months of laying low, it's safe to say that NVIDIA's PhysX technology is back from its lull. At the bustling Game Developers Conference in California, said company is announcing an all new term for us to learn and love: APEX. In short, APEX is a new capability to to its PhysX technology development software development kit (SDK) that provides artists, level designers, and game developers with a set of easy-to-use tools that streamline the process of implementing scalable physics across multiple platforms for next-generation titles.

If you're looking for a little more detail, we're told that APEX has been engineered as a modular framework that works in concert with existing PhysX SDKs, making it easy for devs to add detailed physics effects to their games. Furthermore, it can help them optimize the gaming experience across multiple platforms with a simple "author once" cross platform content creation feature -- an inclusion that sounds particularly awesome to us. As expected, the APEX toolset will be available free of charge for licensed NVIDIA PhysX developers and is already being integrated into some of the world’s most popular development libraries and game engines, including Emergent Game Technologies’ Gamebryo LightSpeed.

NVIDIA also points out that APEX supports new plug-in modules, each of which provide a high level interface enabling artists and level designers to facilitate turnkey physics content creation with little or no programmer involvement. Oh, and yes -- APEX is good to go on all major gaming platforms, including PC, Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3.
