A lot of Nintendo fans were disappointed and even downright angry when they were unable to secure an NES Classic Edition console in time for Christmas. Supply fell way short of demand, while many of those who did manage to get their hands on one of the retro consoles took to selling them on eBay and Craigslist at around a 400 percent markup. Will a similar situation play out with the Nintendo Switch? There are reasons to believe it will, though Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is confident it won't. The Nintendo boss told Wired in an interview that Nintendo anticipated the NES Classic Edition being popular with consumers between 30 and 40 years old, with kids, and who have perhaps... Nintendo must have known it was just a matter of time before "modders" started to crack into Famicom Mini. Twitter user “bakueikozo" discovered a secret message in the code of the console that appears to be intended for hackers. The secret code stated, “This is the hanafuda captain speaking. Launching emulation in 3...2...1. Many efforts, tears and countless hours have been put into this jewel. So, please keep this place tidied up and don't break everything! Cheers, the hanafuda captain." Hanafuda are Japanese playing cards that are used to play a number of games. Nintendo produced its own hanafuda cards when it was founded in 1889, however, production was largely abandoned by the 1960’s. The... Read more...
If you were super good last year (and super lucky), you might have scored an NES Classic Edition console on Christmas morning. The retro game system was one of the hottest and most in-demand items this past holiday season, commanding more than three times its value from second-hand sellers on eBay and Craigslist. Though in short supply, hackers have already managed to mod the console to accept more games in the form of ROM files. The NES Classic Edition comes with 30 games already included, among them classics such as Super Mario Bros. (1-3), The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Castlevania, Tecmo Bowl, Ghosts'N Goblins, and many more. It's a fine collection, though as one of the best selling... Read more...
We’re running out of days to obtain a Nintendo NES Classic Edition before Christmas. The big day is coming up on Sunday, and at least two retailers are hoping to improve your chances of spreading Christmas joy with new stock of the hard-to-find gaming console. First up is GameStop, which says that it will have the NES Classic Edition in stock both today and tomorrow. The company issued the following statement: GameStop has again received another limited shipment of Nintendo NES Classics today through Thursday. Only available in store, not online. GameStop recommends that customers call their local stores to determine local quantities. While your chances of purchasing the NES Classic Edition today... Read more...
Nintendo’s proclamations that anyone wanting to get their hands on an NES Classic Edition in time for Christmas seem to be falling flat. We’ve seen the console sell out in record time whenever they are found in stock, with some retailers resorting to a lottery system to get the consoles into the hands of eager beaver retro game lovers. So, since Nintendo hasn’t fulfilled its promise [yet] to get an NES Classic Edition into the hands of anyone that with cash in hand, we have to wait on stores to announce new stock — the latest of which is Best Buy. The electronics retailer says that starting December 20th, it will have "limited quantities” available in its brick and mortar locations and that... Read more...
When it comes to Christmas Secret Santas, every tech nerd would love to be on the receiving end of Bill Gates’ graciousness. The Microsoft co-founder, philanthropist, billionaire and all-around good guy once again brought Christmas joy to a redditor via the site’s annual Secret Santa festivities. Redditor Arrex explains that a giant box was dropped off on her doorstep by FedEx on December 16th. Needless to say, once she opened the package, her level of excitement shot through the roof at lightning-fast speed. “Under the first layer I see a picture...and my jaw. Just. Drops. I will let the picture speak for itself!” The picture, of course, is of none other than Gates, sitting in front of a Christmas... Read more...
The NES Classic Edition console is one of the hottest and hard to obtain toy items this holiday season. Nintendo and its retail partners have been selling out of every unit produced, which in the United States came out to 196,000 of the miniaturized consoles in November, according to data collected by industry tracking firm NPD Group. That is an impressive start for the NES Classic Edition, though it did not come close to meeting demand.Stores that receive stock of the retro console have been selling out of whatever inventory they get in matter of seconds. At brick-and-mortar locations, any advance announcement of having stock at a particular day and time leads to people camping out in front... Read more...
We’re less than two weeks away from Christmas, and despite assurances from Nintendo that there would be plenty NES Classic Edition stock available for customers, supplies remain tight. As recently as last week, Nintendo of America chief operating officer Reggie Fils-Aime said, “Our biggest challenge is making sure that we’re constantly replenishing it to the marketplace. So, as we sit here today, two weeks before Christmas, I think consumers are going to be able to get their hands on it.” Given the instant sell-out status at places like Amazon, Walmart, Toys R Us and Urban Outfitters, we’re having a hard time believing Fils-Aime. With that being said, at least one online retailer, ThinkGeek,... Read more...
At this point, many gamers are a bit deflated over their continued efforts to snag a Nintendo NES Classic Edition game console. Every time that the $59.99 device has come in stock via online retailers, it has sold out in less than a minute. Finding availability in retail stores hasn’t been much better, with people waiting in lines for hours to get their hands on limited inventory. For its part, Nintendo issued the following statement in early November regarding NES Classic Edition inventory: The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition system is a hot item, and we are working hard to keep up with consumer demand. There will be a steady flow of additional systems through the holiday... Read more...
Have you struck out again and again when it comes to trying to find a Nintendo NES Classic Edition console (we’re looking at you, Paul)? Well, it looks as though Amazon will be the latest retailer to give gamers the chance to score the console at retail price instead of paying huge markups from sites like eBay or Craigslist. Amazon made the announcement last night with a simple tweet: NES Classic fans: we've got a couple exciting announcements to make in the coming week. Stay tuned for more info soon! — Amazon Video Games (@amazongames) December 7, 2016 For now, that’s all we have to go on. It is often said around this time of year that this is the season to be jolly, but screw that, I'm a little ticked off at the moment. Check that, I'm a LOT ticked off and I don't know whether to direct my rage at Nintendo, Urban Outfitters, or ultimately myself for getting sucked into this consumer culture that castrates the true spirit of the season. You see, I've been trying and failing to secure an NES Classic Edition console, the equivalent of this year's Tickle Me Elmo or Cabbage Patch doll, and it's maddening. It shouldn't be. After all, the system is rigged for failure, and I know that. But when a company seemingly goes out of its way to mishandle a sale on a high demand product the way... Read more...
Are you still looking to find a Nintendo NES Classic Edition console, but don’t want to pay upwards of four times the retail price on eBay or Craigslist? Well, get in line. Everybody and their grandma wants the retro console and Nintendo seemingly just loves toying with gamers when it comes to initial supplies over and over again. However, there are reinforcements on the way, and they are coming from the most bizarre retailer that we could imagine when it comes to console sales. No, we’re not talking about Best Buy, Amazon or even Toys R Us — instead, you’ll have to venture to Urban Outfitters. Yes, you heard that correctly; the same retailer that dabbles in often kitschy and hipster apparel... Read more...
If your children (or you, we won’t judge) have the NES Classic Edition game console or Hatchimals on their wishlist for Santa, you might be out of luck. They are completely sold out, and it is uncertain when Santa’s elves will be creating the next batch. The NES Classic Edition and Hatchimals are not the first toys to be this popular, and they certainly won't be the last. Here is our list of some of the most high-in-demand, hard-to-find toys in holiday seasons past. Cabbage Patch KidsMany toys throughout the twentieth century were incredibly popular, however, Cabbage Patch Kids were really the first toys to create chaotic shopping frenzies. Cabbage Patch Kids were originally created by artist... Read more...
The NES Classic Edition game console is this year's Tickle Me Elmo, only it's not just kids who have it on their wish lists, it's adults too. And just like the Sesame Street doll, Nintendo's retro-themed miniature game console is sold out everywhere, save for second-hand sellers who have gone and jacked up the price on places such as eBay and Craigslist. If you really want to grab one in time for Christmas, you can pay a grossly inflated price, or you can try your chance at Toys R Us tomorrow. Toys R Us is kicking off its Christmas sale bonanza on Sunday. It's a week long event featuring an assortment of toys and electronics, including the NES Classic Edition console and Hatchimals, another of... Read more...
