Remember when mobile hotspots were clunky little black boxes that just had one or two LED notification lights? Those days are gone. These days, hotspots are just as whiz-bang as any other modern gadget, and AT&T is about to pick up perhaps the most innovative one to date. The company announced today that it will carry Sierra Wireless' Unite, a 4G LTE-capable hotspot that has a unique 2.4" touchscreen and can support up to 10 connections at once. Customers can also manage connected devices, change network and device settings and block unwanted devices from joining the network – directly from the screen. Customers can choose one of AT&T's existing individual or family plans or select... Read more...
It may not look like a mobile hotspot, but that's exactly what it is. Developed by Novatel Wireless, this AT&T-bound hotspot is actually not the strangest we've ever seen. That honor undoubtedly goes to the Verizon iPad, which also doubles as a wonderful mobile hotspot. That aside, this new Liberate is designed to operate on AT&T's 3G and LTE networks, boasting a 2.8" color touchscreen and support for up to 10 simultaneous connections. That screen is a real boon; anyone who has used a prior-gen MiFi knows how troubling it is to see flashing lights and nothing more as you attempt to troubleshoot. Now, the screen will inform users about data usage, network settings, etc., all while letting... Read more...
Oftentimes, we find ourselves wishing that Wi-Fi was everywhere. Kind of like oxygen. But given that it's not going to happen any time soon, this is actually getting us closer to the goal. TruConnect Mobile has announced a partnership with Walmart that'll bring Internet on the Go to customers. It's described as a "prepaid mobile broadband service that offers a great value for casual users." The keys here are twofold: Walmart, meaning widespread accessibility, and prepaid, which puts in the hands of so many people who have no need to commit to a two-year data agreement. The service will start by selling the MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, as well as a service plan from TruConnect with no... Read more...
Verizon has been impressively aggressive in rolling out 4G LTE networks all over the country, and part of the benefit of doing so is that the wireless provider can offer products like the Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot (MiFi 4620), which will be available at Verizon Wireless and Best Buy stores starting on April 12th. The MiFi 4620 purports to support up to ten WiFi-enabled devices simultaneously and should operate in 205 countries, granting international travelers high-speed mobile Internet. There’s a simple user interface with an OLED display that allows users to adjust settings and check information. Although the device itself will retail for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate,... MiFis and mobile hotspots are small, but they aren't tiny. Yet. Option is aiming to redefine how a wireless hotspot / router should look, by introducing the smallest one you've ever seen. The XYFI is indeed hailed as the world's tiniest mobile hotspot, offering Wi-Fi signals to up to eight devices. In addition to connecting to cellular networks to share Wi-Fi, XYFI also connects to WiFi presenting the user as a hub to connectivity and providing carriers with significant Wi-Fi offload benefits. XYFI is powered via USB connection, meaning users can take advantage of a wide variety of USB-enabled power sources; in fact the XYFI will offer a set of elegant power accessories, including a wall and... We've discussed the fragmentation of Android and the shoddy update services of the various carriers before, but the Droid 3's situation is raising these issues again. According to pre-CES reports, Verizon is poised to end-of-life (EOL) the Droid 3 along with its entire current lineup of MiFi hotspots. The BlackBerry Curve 3G and Palm Pre 2 are also reportedly on the chopping block, but the former is low-end device that's several years old, while the latter is a bit of an anachronism. The Droid 3, in contrast, is barely six months old. It's the only Motorola phone with a physical keyboard that Verizon carries, and it's already become a poster child for the problems with the Android ecosystem.... Read more...

For Americans, traveling to Europe can be expensive. The plane ticket usually isn't the killer, but rather the international data roaming: at around $5 per MB, just checking email a few times could leave a traveler with quite a shocking bill. While travelers can purchase European SIM cards, the endeavor can be a hassle. That's where Xcom Global is coming in. The company has made a name for itself by renting MiFi and USB WWAN devices to travelers who go to select overseas countries, and now it is expanding to the bulk of Europe with a single device. This new Euro SIM is a serious all-in-one punch, offering unlimited data in 40 countries across the pond for as little as $12.95 per day for a USB... Read more...
There comes a point in the life of every laptop computer where an Internet connection becomes a necessity. It's all grown up. It's no longer just a viable option; it's a requirement. And TRENDnet is helping notebooks everywhere "get their grown-man on," with the shipment of the ultra portable 3G Mobile Wireless N Router, model TEW-656BRG. This device shares a single Internet connection from a compatible Sprint, AT&T, Verizon or other USB 3G / 3.75G USB modem with multiple users. The TEW-656BRG is one of the lightest and smallest 3G routers available; so small that it can slip into any laptop bag unnoticed. It has no battery, and can be powered directly from a laptop's USB port, eliminating... Read more...
The Mobile HotSpot shown here isn't new. It's a device that has kicked around on a few carriers in its day, but now, one of America's most prominent cable companies is taking a major step toward becoming an all-in-one service provider. Comcast has just launched this 3G/4G device as a part of their Xfinity Internet2go lineup, enabling pay-TV customers to get mobile broadband from the very same parent company. The device here isn't the story. It's a 3G/4G MiFi, just like the ones that have been around for years now. But Comcast is undercutting Sprint's version ($80) by charging just $25 on a one-year contract, and service costs just $40/month, whereas Sprint's 4G service costs $50. You'll still... Read more...

Are there ever enough MiFi options in the world? Nope. Sprint's got one more for the picking, and it's a good one. Thanks to integrated 3G and 4G support, the new MiFi Mobile Hotspot from Novatel Wireless is a two-faced device with lots of potential. As with most other MiFi devices, this one will also provide mobile broadband for up to five devices connected over Wi-Fi, and obviously it'll do WiMAX in locales that support it and 3G in other areas. The unit also comes preloaded with the MiFi OS, widgets and application support, but it's a bit thicker than the previous MiFi 2200. There's a microSD card slot here with support for Mac, Linus and Windows, and it's supposed to ship out directly from... Read more...
Another Verizon Wireless / Samsung announcement? It's true! The two companies just keep on giving at CES this year, this time introducing something for those who just can't stand to disconnect while on the go. VZW was one of the first carriers out with Novatel Wireless' MiFi 2200, but that only operates on 3G. Now, with the company's 4G LTE network live in 38 regions around the country, it's time for 4G hotspots. Samsung Mobile has just launched the 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot, a handheld, battery-powered device that connects to Verizon's LTE network and rakes in download rates between 5Mbps and 12Mbps, while upload rates can reach between 2Mbps and 5Mbps. Best of all, this mobile device is also backwards... Read more...
Ah, the MiFi! It's a great product, and one that's probably overlooked and under-appreciated by most consumers who don't see a burning need to carry around a live 3G connection when they commute or travel. But for those who remain connected at all times, or long to remain connected at all times, there's hardly a better product on the market. Tethering a smartphone definitely does the trick, but it quickly drains battery life and ties up your phone's connection. The MiFi is a standalone pebble, but for those who prefer AT&T's high-speed 3G, they haven't been able to indulge. In practice, AT&T's 3G really is speedier than the CDMA rivals, but you need to be within a well-covered AT&T... Read more...
Sprint thanking Apple for making the iPad? That's something you probably didn't see coming. Sprint is one of the two major U.S. carriers that have no real ties to the iPad. Verizon Wireless just started offering the Wi-Fi version along with a VZW MiFi, and AT&T has an integrated 3G version. So why would Sprint be thankful for the iPad's invention? According to a recent interview with GigaOM, Sprint's CEO recently expressed his gratitude for the iPad, saying that it has been largely responsible for a surge in sales of their Overdrive. The Overdrive a 3G/4G mobile hotspot, and Sprint has sold an iPad case before with an Overdrive slot. As Sprint sees it, these two are meant for each other.... Read more...
Novatel Wireless. It's a company that you may not be familiar with, but they're responsible for a phenomenon known as the MiFi. These portable wireless hotspots have made broadband access much easier to find on the road, and since they operate with a battery, they can actually provide Internet to more than just a single device, which is something a typical USB stick WWAN card cannot do. The company's newest Intelligent Mobile Hotspot is the MiFi 2372, which is pre-loaded with the new MiFi OS and applications "aiming to help businesses benefit from secure mobile broadband and providing access to information and resources anytime, any place." An increasing number of business applications and widgets... Read more...
Verizon Wireless has a new way for you to get online, but it's a pricey one. The company already has an array of mobile broadband devices that are designed to keep you connected regardless of where your notebook (or Wi-Fi enabled device) go. But that's only within North America, for the most part. Even the company's MiFi doesn't have a SIM slot, so it's more like a brick in many European and Asian nations. But the company is now ready to take things international. The Wireless Fivespot is a unique new mobile hotspot that combines domestic CDMA service with international GSM service by including a SIM card slot. It ships with a pre-installed SIM card and provides global data service in more than... Read more...

In a one-on-one meeting with Engadget, Verizon Wireless' Senior VP and CTO Tony Melone revealed some interesting details about the wireless carrier's plans for LTE and LTE-related devices. More specifically, Melone confirmed that ALL of its data-only LTE WWAN devices (such as aircards, MiFi-type products, and USB data sticks) will also support 3G. This is definitely good news for users, especially those who may find themselves traveling in and out of 4G data coverage areas. Considering some of today's WiMAX products don't offer the same versatility, this is a welcome announcement. Although data-centric devices such as aircards, USB data sticks, and MiFi-type devices supporting LTE will be the... Read more...
Verizon Wireless already announced that Novatel Wireless' MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot would soon be sold and operable on its network, and now that company's main US competitor is doing the same. Today, Sprint came forward to announce that the very same device -- albeit with a new, shiny aluminum shell and a Sprint logo -- is coming to its network. Essentially, this pocket sized device enables any Wi-Fi device to connect to Sprint's cellular data network, and that includes portable media players (like Apple's iPod touch), notebooks and any other random device that happens to have a Wi-Fi radio within. In case that's not clear enough, here's the bottom line: up to five devices with a Wi-Fi...
