Apple's iPad tablets are the most popular on the consumer market, but that doesn't mean that development on the devices should come to a standstill. Apple's iPad mini has been around for a long time and hasn't seen any significant design updates in six years. Sure, there have been upgrades to performance and support for the Apple Pencil, but it's the same old song and dance from the outside. A new report suggests that the iPad mini will receive its most extensive makeover in history later this year. Like how the iPad Air received a dramatic redesign last year with thinner bezels, the next-generation iPad mini is rumored to get the same treatment. The slimmer bezels also mean that the long-serving... Read more...
It seems as though Apple’s all-new, next-generation MacBook Pro laptops are always “right around the corner.” Ever since Apple launched the first wave of M1-powered Macs, all eyes have been trained on when the higher-end versions of the MacBook Pro would receive a complete makeover. A new report is plotting a more definite timeline for the release of the machines, and they could arrive as soon as this summer. According to Mark Gurman, the 14-inch MacBook Pro carries the internal designation J314, while its 16-inch counterpart is referred to as the J316. Powering these machines will be the company’s second-generation, Arm-based Apple Silicon. Whereas the currently shipping... Read more...
For the past few generations of iPhones, Apple has released Smart Battery Cases that allow you to extend the runtime of your device. The Smart Battery Case introduced for the iPhone 11 family featured a silicon case that wrapped around the device and an integrated battery that charged the device via Qi wireless technology. Apple is reportedly taking a different approach with the battery case for this year's iPhone 12 family. According to a new report from Bloomberg, this new battery case won't add any additional protection to the iPhone 12/iPhone 12 Pro, and is simply meant to give you boosted runtimes. And given that the iPhone 12 introduced MagSafe to the equation for charging... Read more...
If you have an implantable medical device, Apple is warning that you might want to rethink what accessories you purchase for your brand-new iPhone 12 (and where you place them). In a new support document that was uploaded to its website over the weekend, Apple confirms that the iPhone 12 and its supporting accessories can potentially cause electromagnetic interference with medical devices. More specifically, Apple points to interference with lifesaving devices like pacemakers and defibrillators. Previous iPhones have included magnetic coils as part of its wireless charging mechanism, but the iPhone 12 includes a greater number of more powerful magnetics to support MagSafe accessories (like chargers... A week ago, two of the most prolific leakers when it comes to future Apple hardware coalesced around what features will be going into the next-generation MacBook Pro laptops. At the time, both analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman agreed that redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros are incoming with faster Apple Silicon SoCs, MagSafe charging, and a distinct lack of the unloved OLED Touch Bar. Gurman is back at it again today with some insight into Apple's next entry-level MacBook Air laptop. If you recall, Apple just a few months ago introduced a new MacBook Air, which was the first of three new Macs to make the switch to Arm64 architecture with the Apple... Read more...
When Apple introduced its first custom SoC, the M1, it was installed in three new machines: the Mac mini, the MacBook Air, and the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Over the next two years, Apple will continue to use its custom silicon in additional Macs as it completely rids itself of Intel processors and supporting chipsets. According to venerable TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has some big changes in store for its upcoming 2021 MacBook Pros, which should launch in the latter half of this year. For starters, the 13-inch display that has been a fixture for the entry-level MacBook Pro will grow ever so slightly to 14 inches. However, the range-topping model will remain at... Read more...
The hits just keep coming for those that have bought a new iPhone 12 and are looking to tap into Apple's growing MagSafe accessory ecosystem. The company has just now confirmed that its 29W chargers, which were still on sale as recently as two years ago, are insufficient for charging two devices with the new MagSafe Duo wireless charger (which can charge an iPhone 12 and Apple Watch simultaneously). Before we even get into the latest charging fiasco with the MagSafe Duo, we must first tackle the absurdity of the notion that this wireless charger doesn't even come with a wall power adapter. A wall adapter is necessary for the product to work, and at $129, you would think that Apple would include... Read more...
Apple's 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini is expected to be a hot seller once preorders open up on Friday morning. The smartphone will be priced from $699, which is $100 less than the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 that it is most closely aligned with. However, it appears that the iPhone 12 mini has some other compromises tossed in (besides its smaller display and battery), including its MagSafe charging abilities. It has just been revealed in a recently updated support document that in addition to the already convoluted wall adapter requirements necessary to get maximum power from an official MagSafe charger, that the iPhone 12 mini is limited to wireless charging at 12W. This is a 3W drop from the 15W maximum... Read more...
When Apple announced its iPhone 12 family earlier this month, the company took the "courageous" step of removing not only the familiar EarPods from the box (no big deal to most), and the USB-C charging brick. At the time, the company patted itself on the back by stating that it was being environmentally-friendly by not contributing to additional e-waste, considering that that many people already have a gaggle of wall chargers littered around the house (or office). More discerning pundits, however, saw the move as Apple's way to cut costs and help offset the additional expense of the 5G connectivity that is standard across the iPhone 12 family. And one other curious wrinkle is that while... Read more...
Ever heard of HyperMac? If you have ever shopped for an extended battery pack for your MacBook, MacBook Pro or iPad/iPhone, then you probably have. The company has earned somewhat of a positive reputation in the Apple circle for offering some of the best external battery packs around for Apple's line of notebooks, but all of that is coming to an end soon. Earlier this year, Apple actually filed a patent infringement lawsuit claiming that the company never got the correct permission (or paid up, basically) to use Apple's patented MagSafe connector. Each HyperMac external battery pack ships with a power cable that enables the battery to connect to the Apple notebook via the standard break-away... Read more...
