It looks as though Apple's autonomous vehicle efforts still have a ways to go before they can compare with the best in the industry. The numbers are in, and Apple reported more self-driving vehicle disengagements than any other company. Apple’s 62 vehicles experienced a grand total of 69,510 disengagements. A “disengagement” is when an autonomous vehicle either gives control back to the driver or when a driver interferes. Ideally, the self-driving car should remain “engaged” during the entirety of the drive unless there is an unusual and unavoidable emergency. Apple reported 871.65 disengagements per 1000 miles or a disengagement occurrence every 1.1 miles. Google’s... Read more...
Your Lexus might not be your best navigation tool, unless you enjoy purple screens of death. A botched Lexus OTA software update has crippled the vehicle navigation and infotainment systems. Affected vehicles such as the RX350 are currently stuck in a boot loop following the update. Cindy Knight, a Toyota spokeswoman stated, “We have not found the root cause yet.” The glitch can also affect radio controls, which are displayed on the same dashboard screen. The company has not yet determined whether vehicles will need to return to dealerships in order to fix this latest glitch or if another OTA update will get customers up and running again. Many of our owner's vehicle head units stopped working.... Read more...
Early last month, Lexus wowed auto show attendees with its all-new LC 500, which manages to pack in a 467hp 5.0-liter V8 engine into a uniquely-styled coupe. The design of the LC 500 may not be for everyone, but you can’t deny that the vehicle is an eye-catcher (for better or worse). Although it wasn’t announced at the Detroit Auto Show in January, we had a feeling that Lexus was developing a hybrid version of its latest luxury coupe. Today, Lexus confirmed our suspicions with the announcement of the LC 500h, which will be officially unveiled at the upcoming 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March. Lexus says that the LC 500h will debut the company’s next generation Multi Stage Hybrid System that will... Read more...
If you’re one of the many that is not a fan of Lexus’ spindle grille (lovingly called the Predator grille in enthusiast circles), you likely won’t be too impressed with the new LC 500. The LC 500 is the production version of the LF-LC concept car that debuted four years ago at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Amazingly enough, the LC 500 made the transition from concept to production relatively unscathed with respect to styling (for better or worse). The spindle grille simply dominates the front-end of the and, and is perhaps the best implementation of the feature on a production Lexus to date (at least to my eyes). Flanking the grille are Lexus’ “Nike swoosh” running lights and funky LED headlight... Read more...
Lexus first gave us a glimpse at its hoverboard prototype back in June and it definitely piqued our interests. For those of us that grew up watching 80’s flicks like Back to the Future Part II, the Lexus hoverboard was a dream come true — not to mention that it came from an unlikely source: a Japanese luxury car maker. Just when the initial hype of the hoverboard was starting to die down, Lexus is back in the headlines today with the release of two new videos that showcase the superconducting hoverboard. Lexus worked together with top scientists from IFW Dresden and Evico GmbH to create the hoverboard, which has internal semiconductors that are cooled by liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen brings... Tony Hawk is probably the most famous skateboarder of all time while Shaun White is the face of snowboarding, but who will represent the hoverboard? Marty McFly is the obvious candidate, except he's a fictional character. Oh, and there's also the problem of availability -- you can't just buy a hoverboard on a whim, though that may soon change. Remember the Lexus Hoverboard that made headlines a month ago? Lexus wasn't willing to reveal too many details about its creation, though it did drop a teaser video that showed the thing hovering about an inch above the ground with steam coming out of its sides. Science fiction? Not quite, and in a new video posted to YouTube, Lexus pegs August 5 as the... Read more...
Lexus is playing into the hearts and minds of every thirty-something who remembers watching Marty McFly make a fool out of Biff Tannen on his hoverboard in the second Back to the Future flick. Released in 1989, it was the second of three Back to the Future movies, and for the past 26 years, we've been waiting for the real thing. Has Lexus finally done it? We've seen hoverboard projects before, like the Hendo Hoverboard that raised over half a million dollars on Kickstarter. Existing solutions use powerful magnets and scientific workarounds to keep users slightly above ground, but the heavier the object that's levitating, the stronger and and colder those magnets need to be. Lexus isn't talking... Read more...
