By now you've probably noticed that Intel launched a new family of desktop processors today, featuring a new core stepping and support for a 1333MHz front side bus speed; you can check out our evaluation of the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 with more information regarding the launch right here. What goes faster than a Core 2 Quad processor at 3GHz?  Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your perspective, nothing from AMD at the moment.  Thankfully Intel has a few more "MHz in the can", or so to speak.  Actually, it appears they may have a lot more, as you'll see in the pages that follow.  Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves though.  First, Intel had to lay the platform foundation to support higher performance.  After all, a faster engine is no good to you, sitting idle. Hello All.  I ntel’s has just launched their latest flagship desktop processor, the Core 2 Extreme QX6850, and we’ve got it on the test-bench at here HotHardware.com.  Here’s a snip: “It took a small voltage bump to 1.45V in the BIOS to hit 3.73GHz.  To achieve this, we raised the FSB to 466MHz and dropped the multiplier to X8.  Once we hit our highest, stable clock speed, we were surprised how stable things were even with a relatively low cost standard HSF cooler.  We used an Artic Cooling Freezer 7 cooler to achieve these results.”... Universal Music Group has notified Apple that it's not renewing its annual contract that allows Apple to offer Universal's  music through Apple's iTunes service. They haven't ended the relationship entirely, as Universal continues to market through iTunes as a sort of tenant at will. It's all about leverage when the pennies get counted. By refusing to enter a long-term deal, Universal may continue to press for more favorable terms from Apple or even explore deals to sell its catalog exclusively through other channels. Yahoo investors have finally gotten their way and a replacement for (now former) CEO Terry Semel has been named: Co-founder Jerry Yang.  It isn't that Terry Semel wasn't a capable leader, in fact he lead the company in the dark times that are now referred to as the .com crash era, but investors felt that he lacked the ability to guide the company in the current marketplace.  So what's next for Yahoo now?  Current speculation is that Jerry Yang is going to shake a lot of things up and potentially be looking for opportunities to partner with major players in many industries. Leslie Sobon, director of product management at AMD, declared today that AMD is making preparations to change its current processor naming scheme. AMD’s new naming scheme combines two letters with four digits. The first letter indicates the grade of the product. For instance, G class is top of the line material, B class is intermediate, and L is considered value class. Think Secret, past victim of Apple legal harassment for releasing info on unannounced products, has just posted some interesting information on the upcoming iPhone: "Think Secret sources have also been dropping additional iPhone-related details over the past weeks. Among the more notable pieces of information: there will be no insurance offered for the iPhone from AT&T or Asurion, the firm AT&T uses for its insurance plans. This means customers who break or lose an iPhone will be unable to replace it at a nominal cost." The Inquirer has an interesting article posted today regarding AMD's upcoming Griffin mobile processor. When the news about Griffin and Puma broke a couple of weeks ago, there weren't many details available about the architecture and design of the new CPU, but The Inquirer has since uncovered some information that paints a more complete picture. "Griffin has DDR2 and HT3 both of which Barcelona can do. On the surface, it looks like Griffin is the K8 cores with the Barcelon uncore bits. That is not correct. Capcom has released DirectX10 and DirectX 9 compatible versions of their XBox360 port Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, so you'll finally get to see that GPU of yours work some of its DX10 mojo. AMD's R600 hasn't even arrived yet and already news regarding its successor, the R650, has emerged. According to a story on The Inquirer, R650 will be a 65nm version of R600, enhanced by AMD private manufacturing techniques, with the ultimate goal of making GPUs more affordable, for both AMD and consumers.   "In short, AMD's CPU manufacturing strategy will be introduced to the world of GPUs. This should result in more affordable and better performing parts. Wikipedia is a great source of information, few would argue against that. The accuracy of the information is a whole different matter though, and it's a problem that's starting to trouble some teachers. The ability for anyone to edit almost any article is a double-edged sword for Wikipedia. It allows for massive amounts of information to be entered into the site, information that can be updated anytime. However it has led to a host of problems ranging from inaccurate information, to article vandalism. Thankfully the collaboration between Ford Motor Company and Microsoft is only for the entertainment system- "Initially to be made available in twelve 2008 models across the Ford family and across the entire 2009 lineup from FoMoCo, the service will be a fully-integrated, flash memory-based system that enables drivers to call hands-free and to control a range of digital audio via voice commands and buttons mounted on the steering wheel. The system is based on an a Microsoft Auto operating system comprising an ARM 11 processor, 64MB of DRAM and 256MB of flash memory.
