There is a lot of blame to go around for the current dearth of graphics cards available in the retail channel. Despite companies like NVIDIA and AMD pumping out record numbers of GPUs, incredible demand still results in shortages that NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang says will continue through 2022. There's also a lot of activity in the cryptomining world, as Ethereum miners have flocked to GeForce RTX 30 Series Ampere cards due to their favorable hash rate performance. With this in mind, an allegedly new -- and previously unannounced -- NVIDIA CMP HX dedicated Ethereum mining card has been spotted in the wild. The new CMP 170HX is reportedly based on the potent A100 accelerator. According to hardware... Read more...
NVIDIA addressed the Ethereum market earlier this year with the launch of Crypto Mining Processor (CMP) HX Series cards. The company also locked down its latest mainline GeForce RTX 30 cards with a Light Hash Rate (LHR) mining limiter. Now, it’s alleged that AMD is looking to get in on the dedicated Ethereum mining market with headless versions of its RDNA 2 graphics cards. Images of this alleged cryptomining card were taken by a local Vietnamese PC hardware retailer, and they show a dual-slot design with an unadorned blower-style cooler. Instead of the standard outputs you’d see on modern graphics cards (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.), the I/O plate is dominated by exhaust vents to help... Read more...
It would be an understatement to say that it has been a rough nine months for gamers looking to purchase new gaming hardware. While the availability of high-end, current-generation processors has, for the most part, stabilized, graphics cards are still hard to find in stock at MSRP. And it's not just current NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 and AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards that are MIA; previous-generation examples are just as hard to find due to cryptocurrency mining. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, according to Jon Peddie Research (JPR). The firm indicates that just-in-time inventory systems were shown to be highly susceptible to supply chain interruptions during the initial... Read more...
It appears that illegal electricity theft and cryptocurrency mining go hand in hand, as the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) reported that it has shut down a massive crypto-farm stealing electricity. Comprised of thousands of consoles and hundreds of graphics cards, the farm was seized from an old warehouse professionally rigged for the illicit activities. In the city of Vinnytsia, a group of crypto miners has been accused of “theft of water, electricity or thermal energy through its unauthorized use,” by the SBU. According to the report, “electricity meters that did not show a real energy consumption” were used to steal upwards of $259,000 in electricity monthly for the... Read more...
On Thursday morning, NVIDIA made two big announcements regarding GPUs. The company revealed that it will be launching the Crypto Mining Processor (CMP) HX GPU Series specifically for the mining community. According to NVIDIA, the GPUs used in these cards "don’t meet the specifications required of a GeForce GPU and, thus, don’t impact the availability of GeForce GPUs to gamers.” The second big announcement, and one that was a bit more concerning to those that like to mine for cryptocurrency on the side, was that the incoming GeForce RTX 3060 is going to be handicapped with respect to mining performance. NVIDIA can "detect specific attributes of the Ethereum cryptocurrency... Read more...
Microsoft has detailed a new malware strain that's been infecting computers globally since October 2018. The malware is called Dexphot, and while it isn't trying to steal data, it is robbing hardware resources of the infected machines. The people behind Dexphot were using the resources of the infected machines to mine cryptocurrency and generate revenue . Dexphot reached its peak in mid-June of 2019 when the botnet had reached nearly 80,000 infected computers. The botnet has shrunk since then as Microsoft has rolled out countermeasures to improve detection and stop attacks. What stood out about Dexphot was the high level of complexity that the attack employed in its methods and techniques. Dexphot... Read more...
Last week, AMD announced the first of its new third-generation Ryzen Threadripper processors. These latest Threadripper processors are based on 7nm Zen 2 architecture with the Threadripper 3960X offering up 24 cores/48 threads and the Threadripper 3970X countering with 32 cores/64 threads.  AMD's new Threadripper processors leverage a new sTRX4 socket (and TRX40 motherboards), which is incompatible with the sTR4 socket used on first- and second-generation Threadripper processors. Despite the fact that sTRX4 has the same number of pins (4096) as TR4, they are electronically incompatible. AMD explains that the mapping of the pins to voltage/data is completely different, which means... Read more...
