The 6000+ isn't the end of the line for AMD Athlon 64 X2 after all. Dispite AMD roadmaps long foretelling that the Athlon 64 X2 product line as we currently know it would end with the 6000+, Digitimes is reporting that AMD is planning to release a new addition to the line-up. The new part will be badged as the 6400+ and will clock in at 3.2GHz with 2MB of L2 cache. This comes as a surprise since the 6400+ has not appeared on any AMD roadmap. However, some motherboard makers are supposed to have already recieved samples and the chips are expected to ship "shortly". Although they're hard at work on Barcelona and plan to release a new high-end, native quad-core CPU in the coming months, AMD has turned a good part of their attention to a different segment of the market, the low power segment.  Back in August of 2006, AMD released several low power CPUs that aimed to balance performance and power consumption.  One was the 'Windsor' based Athlon 64 X2 4600+ with a TDP of 65w and the other was the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ which had a low TDP of 35w.  While the processors were impressive from an efficiency standpoint, AMD struggled to keep up with demand and also offered the models at premium price points.  In February of 2007, AMD changed their approach somewhat, introducing... AMD has been fairly quiet as of late. A few months ago, we took a look at their initial Quad-FX platform and FX-70 series offerings.  However, on the mainstream socket AM2 front, AMD hasn't made any real noise since the release of the Athlon 64 FX-62 way back in May of 2006. That's not to say AMD hasn't released any products since then. In fact, the company has launched a plethora of lower-clocked "Energy Efficient" processors for the platform and replaced the 125W Athlon 64 FX-62 with an 89W X2 5600+ at the same 2.8GHz and cache size. Hello Everyone. Today AMD is officially unveiling a new top-of-the-line socket AM2 processor, the Athlon 64 X2 6000+. The new X2 6000+ sports a full 1MB of L2 cache per core and is clocked at a healthy 3.0GHz, just like the flagship FX-74. Hello All. We've just posted a new article at HotHardware.com in which we evaluate the features and performance of AMD's new 65nm Brisbane core based Athlon 64 X2 5000+ processor. We compare its performance, power consumption, and overclockability to a 90nm Windsor based 5000+ throughout the article for a direct apples-to-apples comparison.   At the end of 2006, AMD announced the availability of processors built using the company's 65nm manufacturing process, which is first being implemented with the Athlon 64 X2 product line. The move to 65nm brings a number of advantages for both AMD and consumers. From AMD's standpoint, the more advanced manufacturing process allows for more processors to be produced per wafer, therefore improving manufacturing efficiency and in turn profit margins. Ultimately, the aim is to let this savings trickle down into retail channels, lowering AMD's costs and potentially the cost of the X2 lines across the board. Our friends at the Tech-Report have followed up their initial coverage of AMD's new 65nm Athlon 64 X2 processors with a deeper look into their performance. It turns out, the 65nm processors have higher latency access to their L2 cache, which hinders performance in some situations. Since this information is technically not under NDA embargo, we thought we'd share with you that AMD is soon releasing volume to the channel of their new 65nm process-based Athlon 64 X2 dual core chips for socket AM2.  The features and performance of these new cores will remain unchanged versus current 90nm models but the tighter manufacturing geometries and die size reduction will result in much lower power and cost structures.  At the very least, these new processors will allow for a few nice upgrade options for those of you that have invested in socket AM2.  Here's what AMD had to say about the test kits we received recently... DigiTimes reports that AMD is preparing to launch no less than 3 new Athlon 64 FX processors in November to combat the launch of Intel's new QX6700 processor. As part of the company's upcoming "4x4" platform which will consist of two dual-core processors being placed on a motherboard, these new products will be competing with Intel's single quad-core processors. As a result, Intel might be able to offer their processor and platform at a much lower cost than a comparable AMD "4x4" platform as motherboard vendors are being forced to use two of the more complex Socket 1207 connectors along with more involved power logic. Hello everyone. We've just taken a look at a pair of energy efficient Athlon 64 X2 processors, more specifically the A64 X2 4600+ and the X2 3800+. These two processors have max TDPs of 65w and 35w, respectively, and as such they sip power and radiate much less heat than their "full-powered" counterparts. Here's a snip from the article...
