It was really annoying, despite all the snazziness of the iPhone 3G, that it didn't include a voice dial application built-into the OS. After all, most of the smartphones we had been using of late (mostly Windows Mobile) had voice dialing built-in.And while some never use voice dialing, in reality, for safety reasons, voice dialing is the only way to go --- at least while driving. And sometimes, for legal reasons, too, if the state you are in requires a hands-free setup while driving. If a cop catches you holding up your cell phone to dial, he may feel you are violating the hands-free law. When we first bought the iPhone 3G, there were some voice dialing apps available through the App Store, but... The Wii Fit is all the rage these days. Selling like hotcakes, it was only a matter of time before another company tried their hand at virtual fitness. The first up to the plate is video game giant Electronic Arts. EA has unveiled its take on fitness. Unlike the "eastern" oriented Wii Fit, which focuses on balance and stretching, this "western" styled fitness game takes a more cardiovascular approach to fitness.  EA Sports President Peter Moore has geared the game towards women, especially mothers, and aims to give people a more strenuous workout by distracting them with the fun of video games, yet still get them to sweat. "It can't feel like a workout," he said, "the team has to figure... There's a lot more to history and archeology than just uncovering the past. Sometimes recreating the past in our present time is the best way to understand how people lived thousands of years ago. One such project, the Rome Reborn project of the University of Virginia's Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities, seeks to digitally rebuild the city of Rome "as it might have appeared at the height of its urban development in the time of Constantine the Great in A.D. 320."The first version of the Rome Reborn project was ten years in the making and was completed only last year. It included digital models of the terrain and over 7,000 structures--250 of which were highly detailed. The source... Read more...

Kudos to the folks over at the independent product warranty company, SquareTrade, for not just offering warranties beyond that of merchants and manufacturers, but for also actually analyzing the failure rate data from over 15,000 new cell phones they covered. Their recent analysis, which is available as a PDF report here, compares the failure rates of iPhone, Blackberry, and Treo handsets, and found that the iPhone was the hardiest one of them all. Within the first 12 months of ownership, SquareTrade saw a 5.6-percent malfunction rate with iPhones. Blackberry handsets saw more than twice as many malfunctions at 11.9 percent; and Treos saw the highest frequency of malfunctions at 16.2 percent.... Read more...
Generally speaking, many travelers, especially business travelers, are somewhat tech savvy. To cater to this audience, some hotels are teaming with tech companies to keep pace with their gadget-obsessed guests.Sheraton, for example, teamed with Microsoft to create its new Link@Sheraton lounges where guests can surf the Internet, email loved ones, review local favorite attractions, and print boarding passes. The PCs in these lounges have Web cams and Microsoft applications that walk guests through recording and sending a video clip. In turn, Microsoft hopes to encourage users to try a task they wouldn’t attempt at home, such as using a Web cam to say goodnight to the kiddos back home. Westin... Read more...
We all know Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) as the company that has historically made high-end workstations for creating and rendering 3D animations for games and movies. But there is a whole other side to the company that many are probably less aware of. This very lucrative part of SGI feeds high-performance computing (HPC) solutions to the government and military. (Interesting tidbit: Silicon Graphics once owned the supercomputing company Cray.) And now it looks like some of SGI's recent implementations are helping to keep the U.S.'s nuclear weapon stockpile in check.  SGI announced that has installed a storage environment made up of 17 InfiniteStorage 4600 systems at the Department of Energy's... Google Inc. CEO Eric Schmidt has declined the opportunity to be the "Tech Czar" for the Obama administration. While Schmidt helped campaign for the new President Elect, and has been advising the Obama campaign on technology and energy as part of his 17-member Transition Economic Advisory Board, the prospect of becoming the first Chief Technology Officer of the United states can't entice him away from Google. "I love working at Google and I'm very happy to stay at Google, so the answer is no." said Schmidt. The job, as CTO, will be a large role to fill. Obama hopes the new CTO will be able to "ensure that our government and all its agencies have the right infrastructure, policies and services... Read more...
