Over the past few months, we have shown you sneak peeks of AMD’s Home Theater PC platform, codenamed Maui, on a couple of different occasions. Essentially, Maui consists of a low-power AMD Phenom or Athlon X2 processor, an AMD 780-series (or higher) IGP, an ATI TV-Tuner and AMD’s Live media center software elements. Currently, MSI’s Media Live DIVA 5.1 motherboard, that has D2's programmable audio chip onboard to allow 5.1 amplified output, is the foundation of Maui (a 7.1 channel pre-amp output card is also an option).   It’s definitely an interesting motherboard to say the least, and we’ve got a review forthcoming, but we also wanted to let you know that Newegg is already offering... It found that Wal-Mart was the most visited retailer for video games, with Best Buy and GameStop tied for second.  The margin was 8%, a pretty large margin, as you can see below. After those three comes Target, and then Circuit City and Amazon, tied.  Yes, the "I'm closing 155 stores" Circuit City, you've got it; still decently high in the rankings. So, based on this, not only is Wal-Mart the world's biggest... Media corporations have been fighting the battle to regain control of their content for years. They’ve sent out countless DMCA notices, but it seems as soon as they succeed in taking down one video clip, five more have already appeared. A quick glance at sites like YouTube or MySpace reveals countless videos that were published without proper authorization. Now, instead of sending removal requests, MTV can earn money from its online videos thanks to Auditude. Auditude will identify video clips that are uploaded to MySpace from a number of shows produced by MTV, and will display an overlay when the clip is played that shows which episode the clip originally came from, its original air-date, and... OMG, finally! We're glad to see a retailer as large as Amazon.com has taken some initiative. How many of you are frustrated by blister or clamshell style packaging such as above? The dang things are so annoying that "how-tos" have been written about them. It's easy to get a cut from their sharp edges, so we're not surprised that articles about "safely" opening them has been written. Custom openers have even been developed. Amazon.com is, with its "Frustration-Free Packaging" project, taking a step toward eliminating not just those packs but also things like tiny SD cards packed in large boxes. The project is starting small, with only 19 products from manufacturers including Fisher-Price, Mattel,... Read more...

It was all very suspicious, an email in our inbox from MTV and the Beatles' Apple Corps.  It seemed to point to a "Rock Band" link.  But it was the Wall Street Journal that solidified things.  According to the all too familiar anonymous sources, we have a deal a-cooking.This is a major coup for MTV, getting the Beatles to sign onto Rock Band.  The Beatles join Aerosmith, Metallica, and Jimi Hendrix (Guitar Hero) and AC/DC (Rock Band)as the latest --- and biggest -- group to license its songs to a music-oriented video game. The Beatles represent the biggest prize to date in the category. A few months back, Intel released the P45 Chipset -- at the time it was considered to be their mainstream offering, playing second fiddle to the X48 Express.  With official support of a 1333MHz FSB, PCI-E 2.0, ATI CrossFire, and support for both DDR2 and DDR3 memory, there's a lot of roads to go down with the construction of one of these boards, and MSI went down all of them.  MSI fleshed out a complete top-to-bottom assortment of  boards, which means that they have a P45 motherboard that suits just about every potential buyer's needs.  Two of these, the P45 Diamond and P45 Platinum are found towards the top end of their food chain, and we'll be taking a look at them today...... Windows PC owners have been able to enjoy Netflix's Watch Instantly movie and TV streaming service since January 2007. The service even significantly expanded the quantity and quality of its streaming content recently by partnering with CBS Television Network, Disney-ABC Television Group, and Starz Entertainment. But Netflix customers who own Macs have been all but left out in the cold. The Netflix Watch Instantly service currently doesn't work on Macs. The only way a Mac user could use the service would be to use in on a Windows partition running Boot Camp. But this is all about to change, thanks to none other than Microsoft... If you spent any amount of time online this last August, you would... Read more...
It use to be that video game developers were geeks in their basements crunching code for hours on end until their eyes bled, with hardly a business plan behind them, never mind a justifiable business case that would support making a career out of their artform.  In fact, gaming itself only really took off in the mass market as recent as the past ten years or so.  Let's face it, back then, with a customer base of predominantly kids in their teens or less, the average PC or Console game consumer just didn't have the disposable income to support anything more than a niche' market.  Likewise, if you were a gifted computer programmer, cinematographer or the like, you probably... Since the RV770 GPU's initial arrival, we have seen the technology used in the GPU creep up and down AMD's product stack. At first, the RV770 powered only the ATI Radeon HD 4850 and 4870, but soon thereafter two RV770's were linked together to form the current flagship Radeon HD 4870 X2, and then the GPU was scaled down to form the Radeon HD 4600, 4500, and 4300 series of products. Ultimately, AMD ended up with competitive offerings at virtually every price point ranging from $39 on up to over $550. But there is an approximate $80 price gap between the $160-ish Radeon HD 4850 and roughly $80 Radeon HD 4670 that AMD plans to fill today with the release of the Radeon HD 4830.As its name suggests,... According to a new poll published by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, American families are just as, if not more, tight-knit than in previous generations. Part of the reason for this? Technology.Instead of weakening family ties as was feared, technology has brought us closer together by letting us chat, email, and text family even when we’re away from home."There had been some fears that the Internet had been taking people away from each other," said Barry Wellman, a sociology professor at the University of Toronto and one of the authors of the report. "We found just the opposite."In the poll, 60% of the adults surveyed did not feel that new technologies had any effect on the closeness... Read more...
In a somewhat similar flap to that over Wikipedia and pictures of the prophet Muhammad, Sony has delayed the hotly-anticipated PS3 game LittleBigPlanet due to the discovery of background music tracks containing two expressions found in the Quran. The game had been scheduled for North American release Tuesday. Instead, Sony says it will start shipping LittleBigPlanet to N.A. retailers on October 27. Copies of the game that have already shipped elsewhere in the world will be recalled from retailers and replaced, according to Sony.
