Beginning early next year, you’ll be able to buy a Samsung TV with built-in support for DivX movies. The DivX Certified Samsung devices will be able to play DivX media files via an Ethernet connection that is certified by the Digital Living Network Alliance or directly through a USB port. DivX developed video codecs that compresses digital media files so that they can be streamed over the Internet while still allowing for high-quality playback. Samsung currently offers DivX Certified DVD players, mobile phones, and other devices. To ensure the best media experience, products must undergo rigorous testing before they can bear the DivX Certified logo. “As an innovator in the consumer... Read more...
Since the codename for the next release of Windows was announced, many of us have wondered what the actual name would be. Well, it turns out that the codename for the next version of Windows, Windows 7, is going to be the actual name for the product. And in what is somewhat of a passing of the torch, the announcement was made not on the Windows 7 blog, but on the Windows Vista blog. In a few weeks we are going to be talking about the details of this release at the PDC and at WinHEC. We will be sharing a pre-beta "developer only release" with attendees of both shows and giving them the first broad in-depth look at what we've been up to. I can't wait for them to see it. And, as you probably know,... Read more...

It looks like the rumored spin-off of AMD's manufacturing operations is just hours away now and reports are starting to ping across the wire of a "significant announcement" that AMD CEO Dirk Meyer will be making shortly.  In fact, we've been invited to a press web cast at 8AM EST that AMD will hold in the morning.  Historically, AMD has taken largely an in-house fabrication model for their wafer fabrication.  However, capitalizing this effort is a huge recurring and perpetual investment that frankly only makes sense if there are significant and off-setting economies of scale.  As process geometries are being driven hard by AMD's primary competitor,... AMD may have seemingly taken a back seat to Intel, in terms of the desktop processor performance crown but you can be sure they plan a whole lot of catch-up in the race for the future platform evolutions that will meld general purpose compute architectures with specialized core engines.  A few weeks ago, we told you about AMD's plans to position their corporate brand around their upcoming Fusion architecture and now it appears AMD has also launched a Fusion site with a myriad of multi-media content offerings, including images, video and this white paper.  In various bits of collateral, AMD speaks of the Fusion architecutre as not only the integration of traditional general-purpose multi-core... MySpace Music was expected to be successful, but this successful? It was launched at 12 AM EDT on Sept. 25th, and despite that short period of time, it has already streamed over a billion songs (and yes, we have contributed to that streaming). In comparison, (though obviously not fair as iTunes is a pay service, while MySpace Music streams for free) it took Apple nearly 3 years, from April 28, 2003 to February 23, 2006, for its one billionth music download. MySpace hasn't provided info such as username, song played or the like, but it did say the following: We’re extremely pleased with the launch of MySpace Music—clearly our users around the world are engaged and excited about the new music experience... This isn't a political post.  It's a security post.  While spam in general is an annoyance, spammers tend to pick those subjects they feel will get people to open up email. According to online security company Secure Computing, the election contains just those sorts of subjects  Their study indicates that spam referring to Barack Obama outstrips that referencing John McCain 6 - 1, while Sarah Palin spam easily beats Biden spam 7 - 2.It's interesting, as the ratio has nothing to do with the ratio of mainstream media news items.  In those, McCain beats Obama 10 - 9.  On the other hand, the Palin - Biden ratio is pretty close to the number above.According to the report:"Though... A new commercial PC game came out two days ago from a brand new game development and publishing company. The game is called CellZenith and the company is called Faramix Enterprises. What make this a unique story is not actually the game (full disclosure: we've not played the game, so we cannot comment intelligently about it), but the story behind the game's making and the genesis of the company... Credit: Faramix Enterprises Three young men in their twenties, from three different states, enrolled in the online bachelor's degree program for Game and Simulation Programming (GSP) with DeVry University. Their mutual interest in games development quickly clicked with each other and they not only decided... Read more...
Most of us still watch movies the old fashioned way: on DVD. Okay, maybe watching movies on DVD isn't that old, but for every $10 U.S. consumers spend on movie and TV entertainment, $8 of it goes to purchasing or renting DVDs... Which certainly makes us wish we bought Netflix stock when it first starting trading publicly in 2002. But DVDs won't remain the number one movie and TV source forever. And no, Blu-ray is unlikely to be DVD's ultimate successor either. The future--and it's not a very distant future--of movie and TV consumption is via online streaming. Netflix knows this and it is why the company has been building its film and TV streaming library for the last year and a half. The problem... Read more...
It's one thing to see, say, banking information to show up on a hard drive on eBay.  But to see top secret information show up on a digital camera (likely on an SD card) sold on eBay, that's a whole 'nother ball of wax.According to The Sun, an unsuspecting 28-year-old Brit spent a pretty reasonable $31 for a Nikon Coolpix camera, and got waaaaaay more than he bargained for.  Not only did he get some top secret info, after he reported it to the police, he got a visit from Special Branch.Among the items on the camera --- which he noticed after he downloaded the pictures from a vacation --- were a document marked "top secret" detailing a computer system used by MI6, pictures of rockets... If you are an Apple iPhone or iPod touch owner, you've likely noticed that nearly every time you check out the App Store, there are several updates available for applications you've downloaded. At first, this makes sense, as the iPhone/iPod touch is still a relatively new platform for developers, which puts them still early on the learning curve--bugs needs to be squashed and new features added. But many users are finding that these "updated apps" neither fix bugs nor add new features. So then what is the purpose of the updates? As TouchMeme developer, Krishna Vegesna, points out in his blog, developers have been "gaming the system" in order to get their apps to show up as "new applications":... Read more...
It appears that a bug in a network driver used in the kernel of the latest alpha release of the popular Ubuntu Linux distro is damaging Intel network controllers, sometimes irreparably. In bug #263555 on the bugs.launchpad.net website titled, "[intrepid] 2.6.27 e1000e driver places Intel ICH8 and ICH9 gigE chipsets at risk", it is noted that the NVRAM on Intel 82566 and 82567 based LAN controllers is being corrupted, but the bug seems to have affected only notebook users at this point..."In some circumstances it appears possible for the 2.6.27-rc kernels to corrupt the NVRAM used by some Intel network parts to store data such as MAC addresses. This is limited to the new e1000e driver, and reports... On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Michael Davis of Duluth, Minnesota, declared a mistrial in the case of Jammie Thomas (pictured), the only person to take an RIAA lawsuit to trial (all others have settled out of court).  She lost her trial last year, but Davis, who presided in that trial, ruled that he erred during jury instructions and set aside the judgment, calling it a mistrial. In his ruling, Davis said:"Jury Instruction No. 15 was erroneous, and that error substantially prejudiced Thomas' rights. Based on the court's error in instructing the jury, it grants Thomas a new trial."Instruction 15 said:The act of making copyrighted sound recordings available for electronic distribution on... With all the talk of cellular handsets and multi-function devices these days, it's hard to believe that there is still even a market for land lines or VOIP services but of course you know better than that.  What's perhaps more interesting than just plain old VOIP telephony and video services like Skype, would be the ability to provide access and functionality for a host of all the various media types; voice, video, text, photos, and interenet services.  This is obviously what any traditional Telephony company has to compete with, when you consider the potential for the iPhone, Google's Android platform and other up-and-comers. ...
