The first story is about the juicy tidbits General Motors (GM) has just revealed about the production-version of the Chevrolet Volt, and the second story is about a bloke who recently completed a successful test run of a self-guided, robotic Toyota Prius he built "in his spare time."        Credit: General MotorsChevrolet VoltAs part of GM's one-hundredth anniversary celebration today, the company finally unveiled the production version... We have explained in numerous articles in the past that the bulk of GPU sales are made in the form of ether IGPs (Integrated Graphics Processors) or affordable, mainstream graphics cards.  As powerful and exciting as the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 or GeForce  GTX 280 cards may be, AMD and NVIDIA simply don't sell as many flagship products as they do mainstream cards. It is because of this fact that both companies consistently refresh their mainstream offerings every few months or so, and continually push new features and performance down their respective product lines.  As many of you may have expected, since AMD recently released the RV770 GPU,... Gasoline being given away?  In this age of $4 a gallon gasoline in the U.S., and much higher prices in Europe and elsewhere, would you riot over it?  All right, it wasn't a riot, but it sure as heck was gridlock.Electronic Arts was trying to promote the Mercenaries 2: World in Flames game.  And the promotion was free gasoline (or petrol, as the BBC prefers).  Publicity they wanted, and publicity they got, but not all positive.Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, said: "Whilst a lucky few might have got free petrol, hundreds of residents have faced misery". The Liberal Democrat said: "Trying to recreate Venezuelan-style fuel riots on the streets of London is completely... Read more...
There is no doubt that spam is pervasive and can be a major productivity killer if the right safeguards aren't in place. In fact, MessageLabs indicates that 78.2 percent of all e-mails sent during the month of August were spam. To make matters worse, Sophos reports that by the end of June, 96.5 percent of all e-mails to businesses were spam. In an effort to quantify the financial cost of spam to businesses, Ipswitch released the results from its recent "Spamometer" survey. According to Ipswitch's Marketing Manager, Brad Senter, the "Spamometer" survey was created by culling data from three Ipswtich e-mail servers that receive a combined one million e-mail messages per week. The best DirecTV DVR was the DirecTiVo, and that is no longer sold --- and we can likely thank Rupert Murdoch for some of that, as it was his desire after acquiring a controlling stake in DirecTV to move to in-house DVRs. Now he's gone, but we still have the DirecTV DVRs. But for DirecTiVo lovers there is light at the end of the tunnel! On Wednesday, DirecTV and TiVo announced they were making their on-again, off-again relationship on-again. Not that you couldn't still use an old DirecTiVo, but as we said, they weren't selling any new ones. In the press release announcing the new DVR, Tom Rogers, TiVo's CEO and president said: "We have had a very successful history with DIRECTV. Together we brought... Read more...
Email spam got you down? Is your first name Aaron? A study by Cambridge University security expert Richard Clayton shows that the first letter of your email address has a lot to do with the amount of spam you receive. The study (.PDF), titled "Do Zebras get more Spam than Aardvarks?" analyzed traffic logs from the U.K. ISP Demon Internet. The data analyzed was from the period Feb. 1st - March 27th of 2008. In the study, Clayton noted that those whose local part of their email address (this is the portion to the left of the "@") begins with "A" receive about 50% spam and 50% non-spam. Clayton called this group aardvarks. When the local part begins with "Z" (call them zebras) about 75% is spam.You're... Read more...

At least that's what it feels like with Samsung's announcement today that it has started sampling low-density, multilevel cell (MLC)-based solid state drives (SSDs) that are "only 30 percent of the size of 2.5-inch SSDs," "higher performance," and "highly cost-efficient to manufacture." Starting next month, Samsung will start mass-producing 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB SSDs using this new manufacturing technique:"We've refined our manufacturing techniques and redesigned our low-density SSDs to get what the low-priced PC market is looking... Creating 3D maps and worlds can be extremely labor intensive and time consuming. And ultimately the final result might not survive the close scrutiny of those expecting real-world emulations. A new technique developed by scientists at The University of Manchester's School of Computer Science and Dolby Canada, however, might make capturing depth and textures for 3D surfaces as simple as shooting two pictures with a digital camera--one with flash and one without. Credit: NewScientist.com For a high-level description of the technique, here is the abstract from a presentation given about it during the "Perception & Hallucination " session from SIGGRAPH earlier this month: "A Perceptually Validated... According to retailer reports, an almost certain iPod line revamp is coming in September. That seems pretty likely, as Apple seems to favor September for iPod launches. At the same time, reports of actual iPod nano details have arisen. Mid-week reports arose of retailers such as Target showing current models of iPods as discontinued when scanned through their PDAs. Finally Lehman Brothers analyst Ben Reitzes restated his claim that the iPod Touch needs a repositioning (it clearly does, with the new subsidized iPhone 3G pricing): "We continue to believe Apple will need to reposition the iPod touch line in conjunction with its anticipated new product announcement in early to mid-September now that...
