MadOnion Video 2000 MPEG 2 Encode and 3D Winbench
Taking to the streets

We ran these next two tests to demonstrate pure processor power.  Both of these tests perform isolated tasks designed to strictly test the processor's performance.  First up is MadOnion's Video 2000 MPEG 2 Encode Test.  This test uses the processor to convert a file to MPEG 2...

Considering the speeds at which these processors are all running, the "Tualatin" is looking pretty good.  Let's see how she handles 3D Winbench, which also runs tests targeted specifically for the processor...

All things considered, the "Tualatin" is really putting up some nice numbers.  Sure, the charts show it lagging behind the Athlon and P4, but once you factor in the difference in clock speeds, you see the Tualatin is for real.

Ok, how does the saying go?  "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."  What do you say we take a break from the benchmarking for a moment and have a little fun...hmmm?

Overclocking The Tualatin Core Pentium III
A natural with enormous potential

Now, we all know that the review wouldn't be complete if we didn't try to see how this processor handles some high FSB speeds.  Since the Intel D815EEA2 motherboard didn't offer any options for overclocking, we used a Soyo SY-TISU motherboard that we recently received and will be reviewing in the weeks to come.  We sure had a lot of fun getting the most out of this processor.  We were able to get the FSB adjusted to 163MHz, pushing the "Tualatin" to 1.47GHz without a single voltage adjustment!  Below are some side-by-side Sandra numbers showing performance at the stock 1.20GHz. and the overclocked 1.47GHz.clock speed.

CPU@1.20GHz.
CPU@1.47GHz.

MM@1.20GHz.

MM@1.47GHz.

MEM@1.20GHz.

MEM@1.47GHz.

With simply adjusting the FSB, we were able to gain 22% in processor speed using a stock cooler and no voltage tweaks.  If this doesn't get the "overclocker's" out there excited, nothing will.

Ok.  We're done playing for now.  Let's continue on to some more numbers...
