Intel Core 2 Duo Performance Update
FarCry and LAME MT
We continued our testing with yet another popular game, FarCry. For these tests, the game was set to a resolution of 1024x768 and all of its graphical options were set to their minimum values. We've got results from the Research, Training and Volcano demos here...
As you can see, Intel's Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme simply dominated the Athlon with all three of FarCry's build-in demos. The Core 2 Duo E6700 was up to 45% faster than the overclocked Athlon here, while the Core 2 Extreme X6800 pulled ahead by almost 58%.
In this next custom LAME MT MP3 encoding test, a large WAV file was converted to the MP3 format, which is a very popular scenario that many end users work with on a day-to-day basis, to provide portability and storage of their digital audio content.
Score yet another victory for the Core 2 Duo. In the single-threaded test, the Core 2 Duo finished the encoding process 32 seconds faster than the overclocked Athlon. And in the multi-threaded test the Core 2 Duo increased its lead to 37 seconds. A few seconds here and there may not sound like much, but convert a whole CD library, and the Core 2 Duo's performance advantage here could save countless hours.
