AMD announced the relaunch of its high-end 'FX' processor brand at E3 today, in a move clearly timed to grab the attention of gamers and computing enthusiasts. For those of you who aren't familiar with the brand, it dates back to 2003 and the launch of AMD's then-new 64-bit, K8 architecture. At the time, the standard Athlon 64 brand applied to processors based on Socket 754 with just one channel of DDR RAM. This refresh wasn't rumored to happen nearly as much as the launch of the iPad or the inclusion of Intel's Core 2010 CPU line in Apple's MacBook Pro family, but the oft neglected 13" MacBook has seen its first real update since 2009 this morning. It's still white, and it's still largely plastic, so there's not much of a difference when you look from the outside. But internally there's enough of a change to warrant a second look. The NPD Group released a statement today that points toward surprising growth in desktop sales this past February. Historically, desktop sales have trended steadily downwards for the past ten years; notebook shipments first surpassed desktop shipments in 2008. New data suggests the pendulum has oddly swung the other way—desktop unit sales were up 30 percent in February, while desktop-derived revenue grew by 33 percent.Part of what makes the jump odd is that there doesn't seem to be a reason for it. At its earnings call last week, Intel detailed its strong 2009 finish after the decidedly uncertain start of the year. The company also gave general forecast information for what it expects in the first quarter of the year and for 2010 in general, and discussed the continuing growth of Atom and its 32nm product ramp. When Intel announced its third-quarter numbers and projected Q4 results last year there was some concern that the company might be overly bullish. MSI added to its ultra-thin laptop line with the new X-Slim X600 Pro. This laptop features Intel's CULV low-power platform along with a high performance Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Windows 7, and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 discrete graphics card with 512MB VRAM. If early reports are accurate, Westmere—Intel's GPU/CPU fusion—will take center stage at the company's developer forum next week. The new processor has been a topic of interest for months, especially after Intel announced it was scrapping its plans to build both the CPU and GPU on a 45nm process. The company's strong 32nm ramp allowed it to skip straight to a 32nm CPU / 45nm GPU combination, which should decrease the chip's overall power consumption. If you're a PC maker, and you're not making any all-in-one PCs, you're clearly behind the times. Here lately, we've seen one after the other roll out from the likes of Dell, Asus and eMachines, and so it makes total sense to see yet another enter the ring courtesy of Averatec.The company's latest machine, which goes by D1005, is a 22" AIO computer designed by business or home users and college-bound students "who need a PC with full functionality while enjoying the benefits of a space-saving design." Earlier this week, we were blown away by how stylish eMachine's newest all-in-one PC was. Clearly, the engineers at Dell aren't taking the competition lightly, as the company's newest Vostro is just as much a looker. The new all-in-one desktop is actually aimed at small business owners, but we could totally see this fitting into pretty much any home office. Dell claims that this machine can morph from "box to business in less than four minutes," and with the optional VESA mount, you can just clamp this onto a desk or wall in order to save lots of desk space. Computex has up in full swing over in Taipei, and while we've already heard news from a few outfits, we have yet to see anything substantial from Intel. Until now. Today, the company is launching quite a few new products, with a trio of new Core 2 Duo processors leading the way. The T9900, P9700 and P8800 are all being debuted alongside the new Intel Pentium ULV SU2700 and Mobile GS40 Express Chipset.           To be completely candid, we would've much rather seen new Atom processors on deck, but we suppose we'll take what we can get. Wolfdale is Intel’s first 45nm based dual-core design, and is an interesting product beyond first glance. When it was first announced, there was a bit of doubt throughout the industry of the chip’s viability in the market. The doubt was that it would be foolish of Intel put major weight behind a dual-core processor architecture, as the future is clearly quad-core processors and beyond. More cores are always better, right? Just in case you hopped right down to the news and missed the fresh link at the top of the page, we’re writing to let you all know that we have just posted a new article here at HotHardware in which we evaluate the features and performance of Intel’s recently released, Wolfdale-based Core 2 Duo E8500 processor.  The E8500 uses Intel’s 45nm Penryn derived Wolfdale core, with a 3.16GHz clock speed, 6MB of L2 cache, and support for SSEE4.1.  Overall, even in its stock configuration this processor was a strong performer, while consuming less power than Intel’s previous generation 65nm products.  But while overclocked to over 4GHz on air-cooling alone, it put up some truly impressive... Intel fans have been patiently waiting for the company to release their lineup of refreshed Core 2 Duo and Quad products. Intel started hyping these revised components late last year, and they were expected to hit the market in January of this year. While Intel technically hit that date with the release of one 45nm component, it was the ultra-expensive Core 2 Extreme QX9650, which sells for over $1,000. Not really the type of component that everyone can get their hands on. Nevertheless, the current generation of 65nm Core 2 products continued to fall in price, and with no real competition from AMD’s Phenom X4 lineup, there really hasn’t been too much of a problem with Intel’s delays. We've just posted a new article exploring the performance and overclockability of Intel's upcoming Core 2 Duo E6750 processor. The E6750 differs from the older and similarly clocked E6700 in that its front side bus frequency has been increased to 1333MHz, but this isn't a simple speed bump. The E6750 is also based on a new stepping and revision of the Conroe-core which resulted in some excellent overclocking. How does almost 4GHz with the stock air-cooler sound? Over the last year or so, since Intel's Core microarchitecture and Conroe core were ready to be unveiled at the Intel Developers Forum in early March '06, Intel has been more open and has allowed the media a view into more details regarding upcoming products much earlier than they had before.  You don't have to take our word for it, however.  Simply look around at all of the early performance previews out of IDF, and the steady flow of announcements regarding Intel's 45nm manufacturing process, metal gate transistors, the Terascale project, Larrabee, Penryn, Nehalem, and a number of other projects, and it becomes readily apparent that Intel wants to get the word out regarding their future products... Dan Warne from APCMag.com spent some time with Intel's Mooly Eden at the Intel Developer's Forum going on in Beijing and has some more information posted regarding Enhanced Intel Dynamic Acceleration Technology. We reported last week that EIDAT would be available with Penryn, but according to the story on APCMag.com, the technology will be available in the upcoming mobile Santa Rosa platform first. "We call this processor Core 2 Duo but really it's Core 2 Duo on steroids. This microprocessor is going to be more powerful than the previous generation," said Intel's mobility chief, Mooly Eden. The popular "Extreme" line of Core 2 CPUs is being developed for notebooks that require the bleeding edge in CPU performance for what ever task you can throw at them. It seems mobile gamers of the world can start celebrating. Now if we can only cram some more powerful GPUs in those packages too... Intel is said to be preparing a pair of dual-core Core 2 Extreme processors specifically developed for gamer-friendly notebooks, the first coming in Q2/Q3, the second arriving as a follow-up in Q4. Our friends over at Lost Circuits have an article on-line this morning with their thoughts regarding Intel's upcoming 45nm Penryn core and 45nm high-k and metal gate fabrication process. "On January 26, 2007, Intel went public with the demonstration of their first processor core - code name Penryn - manufactured on a 45 nm dry lithography and running several operating systems at roughly over 2 GHz core speed. In the last two years, we've seen a major push for home theater PC's by big names in the computer industry. Intel is pushing their ViiV initiative for HTPC market, AMD is pushing their competing AMD Live! program, and of course, Microsoft got in the game with their Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system. While the product we're looking at today is only directly associated with one of these programs (ViiV), what this all shows is that these billion dollar companies realize the value of getting a foothold in the home theater PC market. The wait for many Mac users is finally over as Apple has just released a new wave of MacBook Pro notebooks which feature Intel's latest Core 2 Duo processor. Offered with either a 15" or 17" screen, the new MacBooks are claimed to be up to 39% faster than the previous model. With Intel's Santa Rosa mobile platform on the horizon, it would have been nice to have had Apple at least wait to incorporate this new technology as the market has seemingly been waiting for ages already. Regardless, you can bet this new crop of notebooks is still sinfully fast.
