ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate Review: A Mobile Gaming Powerhouse

ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate Review: Battery Life Tests, Charging, And Our Conclusion

ROG Phone 7 15
The ASUS ROG Phone 7 has an unusual battery setup. There are two 3,000mAh cells inside, giving you a total capacity of 6,000mAh. The dual cell design helps ASUS reach high charging speeds (max 65W) without generating to much heat.  The included charger has no trouble hitting the advertised 65W speeds when the phone is empty. ASUS says the device can go from zero to full in 42 minutes, but that seems a little generous. Still, 6,000mAh of juice in just under an hour is impressive.

Keep in mind, not all high-wattage USB-C chargers will get you the max speed. The stock plug uses PPS (programmable power supply), allowing it to vary voltage to reach higher speeds. USB Power Delivery chargers without that feature will charge at a slower rate—it's a good thing there's a charger in the box. Yes, it's a very expensive phone, and it may seem bundling a charger is the least ASUS could do. However, as an example, Samsung sells the $1,800 Z Fold 4 without a charger, so there are no guarantees.

OnePlus 11 5G Battery Life

Not only does the phone charge fast, it lasts ages on a charge. The ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate put up one of the highest battery life scores we've ever seen, beating everything aside from the Red Magic 8 Pro, which also has a 6000mAh battery.

We left the ROG Phone display refresh on Auto mode, which adjust dynamically based on activity. If you force 165Hz because one app or another is not being detected correctly (which does happen), the battery life will fall. But in Auto mode, the ASUS ROG Phone 7 Ultimate will run for the better part of a week on a charge with light use. Even if you're gaming every night, you'll get multiple days out of the ROG Phone.

ASUS ROG Phone 7 Review Conclusion: Overkill All The Things

This phone is big, powerful, and too expensive for most people—we'd have to assume. ASUS hasn't specified the price for the Ultimate variant, but the regular ASUS ROG Phone 7 will retail for $1,000. You likely aren't most people, though, if you are on page-three of a gaming phone review. So, perhaps you like the idea of carrying a phone that can tear through even the most demanding mobile games without breaking a sweat even if it's crazy expensive. That's the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate. This device plays the most demanding mobile games of today in the highest visual and auditory quality, and it even does it for a long time between charges.

ASUS has improved its software over the years, going from some painful shortcomings to only a few minor annoyances. We won't tell you the ASUS build of Android is as smooth or intuitive as what you get on a Pixel, but it's not a deal breaker either. The bugs are relatively minor, and ASUS managed to launch this phone with the latest Android software with several promised updates. We'd like to see longer update support a la the Pixel 7 and Galaxy S, but the two-year OS and four-year security guarantee offer here isn't bad.

A cooling fan for a phone may seem a bit bit silly to some, and it's definitely not easy to carry around, but it does work as advertised. With the AeroActive Cooler attached, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 never throttles. In addition, if you like fancy RGB lights, the cooler has you covered. But at the end of the day, we're still talking about mobile games. Will a few extra frames per second matter in Apex Legends or Fortnite? Likely not, unless you're a pro gamer or eSports aficionado.

Is a better, more powerful mobile gaming experience worth hundreds of extra dollars over other more traditional flagship phones? Not for most smartphone buyers, but in the gaming niche, the ROG Phone 7 makes makes sense and delivers serious performance where it counts.
