After spending many months battling roadblock after roadblock in its fight to continue to be listed on the Toyko Stock Exchange, Toshiba has unveiled a definitive plan to offload its microchip business. Investors have come to the company's rescue, offering up $18 billion USD to acquire its lucrative NAND capacities. Investors include American investment firm Bain Capital, and two organizations controlled by the Japanese government: Innovation Network Corporation, and Development Bank of Japan. Toshiba is apparently getting ready to release a 14-terabyte capacity hard drive model. So say company representatives at the Huawei Connect conference in Shanghai, China, who indicated that 14TB helium-filled HDDs would hit the marketplace "very soon." When pressed for clarification on how soon they were talking about, the representatives said the large capacity HDDs would arrive by the end of 2017.The largest capacity HDD currently available is 12TB—both Seagate and Western Digital's HGST division offer 12TB models aimed at the enterprise market. Toshiba has been busy updating its solid state drive portfolio this summer, and it is leaving no market untouched. The company's latest product announcement is a pair of speedy enterprise SSDs. We couldn’t reveal much about the drive back then, but Toshiba eventually lifted the veil, and revealed a new family of drives dubbed the XG5. Foxconn is attempting to acquire Toshiba's semiconductor business though it is not going at it alone. According to multiple reports, both Apple and Amazon have joined forces with Foxconn to grab a piece of the sale, with each company offering up an untold amount of financial backing to help push the deal through.It is also said that Taiwan's Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision, has partnered with Sharp in its bid. We first learned about Toshiba’s “world’s first” 64-layer, 512Gb BiCS flash NAND back in early February. Later that month, Toshiba began shipping samples of the NAND, promising that it would help enable high-performing and more cost-effective 1TB solutions in a single package. This week, Toshiba is showcasing its 64-layer BiCS flash live at the Dell EMC World conference being held in Las Vegas. Though encryption and enterprise products often go hand-in-hand, that is not always the case. There are some instances where encryption is not needed, and so Toshiba answered the call with a line of non-encrypted solid state drives optimized for data centers. Those drives are now starting to ship in select NetApp SolidFire all-flash array (AFA) models, enabling NetApp customers to reach new markets. When it comes to the global computer storage market, it appears that Toshiba is demonstrating strong gains in a sector that is dominated by the likes of bellwethers like Seagate and Western Digital, which appeared previously to be the last standing competitors in an arena with heavy consolidation. Toshiba has just announced that they will begin shipping samples of its 512 Gigabit, three-bits-per-cell, 64-layer 3D NAND (BiCS 3D). Mass production is expected to take place during the second half of 2017. Western Digital and Toshiba engineers have used digital stacking for their sixty-four layers in order to achieve a much larger storage density for its NAND in a smaller footprint. It looks as though Western Digital could improve its position in the NAND flash market thanks to an impending deal with segment originator Toshiba. Toshiba announced today that it will spin off its NAND flash business (including its SSD operations), and will sell a minority share in order to raise capital.  It’s reported that Western Digital is the leading candidate purchase the minority share, with Reuters saying that the company could take a 20 percent stake.
