WayForward is prepping a new entry in the long-running River City / Kunio-Kun series that will bring old-school, side-scrolling action to a new generation of gamers. Called River City Girls, the new game features a pair of female high school protagonists fighting through six regions of River City. Looking at the trailer, I'm somewhat reminded of the Double Dragon series of yesteryear. In River City Girls, however, Kyoko and Misako are attempting to rescue their kidnapped boyfriends, Kunio and Riki. Players can go at it solo, or enlist a friend for local co-op gameplay. Either way, you will be treated to 16-bit style graphics and an "epic synth-pop soundtrack" featuring NateWantsToBattle, Chipzel,... Read more...
If you're looking for a dirt-cheap gaming console for yourself, a family member, or maybe a recent graduate, Newegg is running a fantastic deal on the Xbox One S. Via Newegg's eBay Store, the Xbox One S is currently priced at a reasonable $199. However, if you add the console to your cart and go through the checkout process, the price drops by another $29.85 bringing the total price to a red hot $169.15 (before any applicable sales tax, depending on your state). That's near Black Friday level pricing for the Xbox One S, but it actually gets even better. For select eBay accounts, eBay's equally hot eBay Bucks promotional period is ending today that gives you 8 percent back if you purchase... Read more...

At E3 2019, Microsoft also gave up details on the next-generation Xbox dubbed Project Scarlett including that it will launch in the holiday 2020 season. Microsoft notes that over 600 titles, including entire franchises like Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, and Mass Effect are backward compatible with the current generation console. Microsoft gave up some details on the highly anticipated game Gears 5 at E3 2019. One of the big details was a launch date; Gears 5 will land on September 10 on Xbox Game Pass or preorder. Microsoft had previously announced that the game would be part of the lineup for the new Xbox Games Pass For Windows 10, which was also confirmed at E3 2019. Gears 5 is bigger than ever with five game modes and the game promises the deepest campaign mode yet. Microsoft said of the game, "With all-out war descending, Kait Diaz breaks away to uncover her connection to the enemy and discovers the true danger to Sera – herself." The company also teased a tie in with Terminator Dark Fate, a move that... Read more...
Microsoft is hoping to usher in a new era for game streaming with its Project xCloud game streaming service. The folks in Redmond, Washington gave us an early look at Project xCloud back in early March and is positioning it as a cross-platform service that will work on Xbox One consoles and even smartphones. Instead of having to install games on your device, those with a stout enough internet connection will be able to stream them directly with minimal lag. Today, Microsoft is giving us an update of sorts on Project xCloud, and its efforts to provide "seamless compatibility" for playing games anywhere. The service will work with just about any existing game without modification.... Read more...

It feels like the current generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles have been around forever, if clumping up iterations into the same generation (such as the Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X for Microsoft, and PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Slim, and PlayStation 4 Pro for Sony). New consoles are on the horizon, however, and Sony recently revealed some tantalizing details about its PlayStation 5. How can Microsoft respond? Before we go any further, forget about the disc-less Xbox One S All Digital edition that is up for preorder for $250. That is not the next-gen Xbox we want to focus on. It's not a next-gen console at all, and is basically an Xbox One S without the optical drive, which makes... Read more...

Understandably, Sony and Microsoft are not divulging too many details about each one's future game console plans—any statements about upcoming hardware are typically vague in nature and reflect a general ethos, rather than specifics about the actual hardware. That said, there is information out there, hidden not just in leaks and rumors, but also in patent applications. One of them talks about a dedicated hardware physics engine. Microsoft filed the patent in January 2018, and it was first published a couple of weeks ago. Titled "Separation Plane Compression," it hints at what could be included in Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console. "A computing device, including a processor configured... Read more...
Gamers were very excited about what EA was cooking up when it and Bioware announced Anthem, an entirely new IP, last summer during E3. The game was highly anticipated but launched with significant problems, and that anticipation turned to disappointment for many. The game has been widely criticized for crashing PS4 consoles with at least one person claiming that the crash bricked their PS4 altogether. Sony has allegedly offered some PS4 Anthem gamers refunds. EA admitted yesterday that Anthem was crashing PS4 consoles and called on gamers to submit crash reports so it could determine the root cause of the crashes. Xbox One gamers might have felt safe as the problem seemed to be limited... Read more...
Given the prevalence of high-speed internet in the United States and the disdain that many gamers have for swapping out Blu-ray game discs, it’s likely that the optical drive on your console might not get much use. The same could be said for movie watching, with many people opting for streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Hulu versus accumulating stacks of Blu-ray discs. Microsoft has apparently gotten the hint, which is why it has been developing a new Xbox One S variant under the codename Xbox Maverick. According to a new report from Windows Central, the official retail name for the console will be Xbox One S All-Digital Edition. The console will completely ditch... Read more...
