Microsoft revealed this morning that it will be announcing "all-new Xbox hardware and accessories" and "perhaps a few surprises" at this year's Gamescom, which is being held in Cologne, Germany. Microsoft will be making its big reveal during the Inside Xbox Show that will be broadcast live from Gamescom 2018 August 21st at 10:30am EST. Even though the current generation Xbox One was initially released in late 2013 and saw subsequent updates with the Xbox One S and Xbox One X in 2016 and 2017 respectively, we aren't likely to see next-generation Xbox hardware at the event. In fact, we're quite certain that this won't be the case.  Microsoft did, however, confirm that it will have new... Read more...
Fans of the vast game No Man’s Sky have a new update coming next week that is called “Next”, and will bring with it some major additions to the game. This update adds a full multiplayer experience that allows players to team up with friends and random players to reach their goals. The Next update also brings with it the ability to play the game in first- or third-person view. Perhaps the coolest of the new features in the update is the ability to become a fleet commander. With that ability, players can command a fleet of ships as they explore the universe. The update also brings with it a significant update for the game’s visuals.  New planetary rings and improved... Behold the MEGA-one video game controller mod. This thing is designed specifically to make your games more immersive by delivering heftier vibration feedback than your PS4 or Xbox One controller is capable of. In fact, the MEGA-one vibration motor is 500 times stronger than what's available in a standard DualShock or Xbox One controller. According to the ex-NASA engineer who designed the controller each bullet you fire in a shooter recoils the controller back at you. The vibration is enough to nearly pull the controller out of your hands in a driving game if you get out of control. The giant vibration motor has an on/off switch that looks right out of a fighter plane. The controller promises... Read more...
Microsoft is introducing Dolby Vision to support to its Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles, the company confirmed. It's already available to users who participate in the Xbox One Insider Program and who download the latest system update (version 1810), along with a few other goodies. Once it rolls out to the public, the Xbox One S and Xbox One S will join a select group of streaming devices that support both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. "Dolby Vision enables select TVs to take HDR up a notch with scene-by-scene precision and accuracy versus standard HDR which uses one setting for the entire movie/show you are watching. If you have a TV that supports the latest version of Dolby Vision and a Premium... Read more...
Microsoft just flipped the switch to send the Xbox One July Update to customers. The July Update (version 1806) is part of the Redstone 4 development branch, which is analogous to the April 2018 Update on the Windows 10 PC side of things. The July Update brings support for FastStart, which we first discussed last month. According to Microsoft, FastStart identifies "which files are needed to begin playing and prioritizes" those files to download from the onset. With this feature enabled, you will be able to start a game up to twice as fast after you download it.  Microsoft is also making enhancements to Pins with a feature called Groups. Groups allows you to more easily "create... Read more...
Sony has been come under increasing pressure due to its unflinching policy of blocking PlayStation 4 cross-play with other consoles (i.e. the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch). In the past, this policy has drawn complaints from gamers, but nothing like what we've seen with Fortnite. Gamer outrage has been immense since cross-play is not only impossible between the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, but cross-progression has also been banned.  Fortunately, it appears that Sony may be willing to cave in slightly when it comes to cross-play with the world's most popular game. Shawn Layden, who serves as President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, provided the following... Read more...
It seems as though PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) was all the rage last year with online gamers, then Fortnite came long to rain on its parade. With Fortnite now gathering up the lion’s share of attention from gamers these days, PUBG engagement has been cut in half since the start of 2018. Developer Bluehole is trying to address some of the complaints that may have caused some to flee the game with a new patch specific to the Xbox One platform. While there is no new content that is being delivered with this new patch, the main focus is being placed on stability and performance. With regards to stability, the developer has made further optimizations to the... Read more...
Ask any PC gamer who stays far away from consoles why they don’t play console games and many of them will tell you it’s all about the controls. Once you are used to a mouse and keyboard, gaming with a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One wireless controller on shooters isn’t particularly smooth. Consoles gamers have also long felt that allowing people to play games with a mouse and keyboard gives them an unfair advantage. This hasn't stopped Microsoft from promising to add mouse and keyboard support to the Xbox One console -- Minecraft already has support for a mouse and keyboard. A new report has surfaced that claims earlier in the year Microsoft gave a presentation to developers that... Read more...
If you have been holding your breath waiting for Microsoft to release a VR accessory for its Xbox One console, go ahead and refill your lungs with oxygen, there is no point in turning blue in the face. Despite previous plans to embrace VR on the console side of the equation, it's not coming to the Xbox One. Instead, Microsoft is limited its VR and mixed reality focus to the PC, which it believes is "probably the best platform" for such things. Microsoft's chief marketing officer for gaming, Mike Nichols, revealed the company's stance in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, saying the focus on the Xbox One does include VR or MR. "We don't have any plans specific to Xbox consoles in virtual reality... Read more...
As with any sector of humanity, gamers are a unique and diverse bunch with different ethnic backgrounds, styles and sense of fashion, shapes, sizes, and so forth. For nearly a decade, Xbox gamers could choose an avatar to represent themselves in the virtual world, albeit with limited selections. That's about to change. Microsoft is pushing out a major update to Xbox Insiders that opens up a whole new level of avatar customization and a bunch of new options. "Avatars will be a unique representation of your desired style, personality, creativity, and mood as you play on Xbox One. As an Xbox Insider, you’re among the first to get your hands on the new Avatars. With this release, you can get... Read more...

This information comes from Thurrott, which indicates that the next Xbox is being developed under the codename Scarlett. Instead, Scarlett encompasses an entire family of devices.  The devices will reportedly launch in 2020,... Read more...
Virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant have been growing in popularity in recent years as more and more devices gain support for the assistants. This growth is coming despite some significant privacy issues with Alexa recently, notably when the Amazon Alexa device recorded a private conversation and sent it to a random contact on the device. Amazon came back with a convoluted answer as to how that breach of privacy happened and vowed to make it so this couldn't happen again. The image below shows a screenshot claimed to be of a coming Xbox One build that offers users the ability to enable voice control with digital assistants. In that image available assistants called out include... Read more...
