It never ceased to amaze us how someone could drop upwards of three thousand dollars on a high-end PC, only... Read more...
A few members of the crew here at HotHardware have had experience selling or servicing PCs for large retail chains at one time or another, and each one of us can tell a handful of stories about clients that didn't take our advice with regard to power protection and ultimately paid the price. It never ceased to amaze us how someone could drop upwards of three thousand dollars on a high-end PC only to scoff at the $50 surge protector recommendation. "No thanks", they'd say, "The $5 power strip will do." And inevitably some of them would be back in the shop a few days, weeks, or even months later because their system's got "hit" during the... Read more...

The crew at Phoronix recently posted a review of DFI's Infinity NF4 Ultra motherboard. It seems that SLI motherboards get the lion's share of the press lately, but if you don't plan to run dual graphics cards, you can't do much better than the nForce 4 Ultra chipset. DFI stands for Diamond Flower Inc., though... "It has been quite a while since we last featured a DFI, or rather Design For Innovation, motherboard at Phoronix but today we are back again with them as we feature one of their products from the Infinity series -- the DFI NF4 Ultra. As the model name implies, the Chipset used is NVIDIA's nForce4 Ultra and it also features a Vitesse... Read more...
Those of you looking for a beefy GPU cooler, without sacrificing PCI slots, will want to check out the Thermalright V-1 Ultra reviewed at OCIA. It's got a unique "wrap-around" design, with heat-pipes and an oversided fan. The guys at OCIA seemed to like it too; so much so that they granted it their "Seal of Approval".The overall thinness of the V-1 Ultra is designed to minimize intrusion of the cooler into adjacent components. The portion on the front of the card is thinner than most stock coolers, however the addition of the fins and fan on the back of the card may inhibit its use in an SLI configuration. ... Read more...

Iwill ZPC64 Review @ AMDZone: "We have been testing Iwill boards since their early VIA Socket 462 offerings, and to tell you the truth we were a bit surprised to see them jump into the small form factor crowd. They did with a lineup that has certainly been different than just the normal bread box style solution. Amongst their most interesting offerings is the very small ZPC64 which at a mere 75mm wide still manages to fit a power AGP video card in it. Before we get to our testing of the ZPC64 lets look at the full specifications." Creative Xtreme Fidelity (X-Fi) @ CoolTechZone.com: "It's been quite a while since we have seen any major activity in the sound card arena. It was around... Read more...
Hey everyone, I'm just dropping off some news before I hit the sack :) Goodnight all. Ultra USB Hubs @ Viperlair "The USB 2.0 Hub has the advantage of nicely spaced out ports, LED indicators for power and usage, and of course the bonus of USB 2.0 speeds. Being a powered hub you shouldn't have to worry about power hungry USB devices drawing to much power and shutting down your ports, and the power adapter itself is quite universal with an input rating of 100-240v; a simple plug adapter and the hub can be powered up anywhere with a socket." OCZ PC2-6400 Gold Series @ Bytesector "Today, I will be taking a look at their second-best DDR2-800 memory modules, also known as their Gold... Read more...

Asus made an interesting statement earlier in the year with their S5N notebook. Its flair wasn't necessarily original, but it was, and still remains, one of the smaller ultra-portable designs available. And it's for this reason, that the S5N remains one of the ultra-portable notebooks in our own personal notebook arsenal. So, needless to say, after catching a glimpse of the new Asus W5A ultra-portable, we were immediately intrigued.  If you haven't already seen it, the Asus W5A is a bit of a departure from other "traditional" ultra-portable designs. With that in mind, let's see what Asus' is using to entice highly mobile computer users... Asus W5A The Specifications Processor •_Designed... Read more...
Today we're going to take a look at three enthusiast class motherboards based on the NVIDIA nForce 4 Ultra chipset, the Abit Fatal1ty AN8, the MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, and the ECS KN1 Extreme. All three of these motherboards take the core features inherent to the NVIDIA nForce 4 Ultra, and implement them in their own unique ways. One board is flashy and boastful, another is subdued and loaded up with third-party on-board peripherals, while the other is rather spartan and quite inexpensive. But in the end, they are all subject to our discerning eyes and the same suite of benchmarks. We took all three of these motherboards for a spin, and... Read more...
Intel's Dual-Core CPUs Examined on OCAU: "Smithfield (current stepping A0) is based on the Prescott 1M core with E0 stepping. This core is known for high overclocking potential. On the other hand, knowing that Smithfield consumes at least 15% more power and runs hotter than the already hot Prescott, we did not expect much when we started overclocking. The reality was a pleasant surprise." ASUS N6800Ultra PCI-e SLI @ Hardwareavenue.com: "Although the Geforce 7800GTX from Nvidia saw its official release mere days ago, it doesn't spell the end of the former generation, in fact it is arguably at this time that the former generation sees increased attention due to (usual) appropriate pricing...
