Sony first announced its Ultra 4K streaming service earlier this year, and we’re now learning that it will launch early next month — April 4th to be specific. However, this won’t be an all-you-can-eat buffet as you might expect with streaming 4K content from Amazon or Netflix. Instead, you’ll be purchasing titles at a hefty $30 each and will be given access to features like High Dynamic Range (HDR) and digital extras that are normally found only on physical discs. Some of the initial titles available on Ultra include Ghostbusters, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Looper, Waterfront, Concussion and The Night Before. “Ultra takes advantage of the latest industry innovations – 4K resolution, high... Underneath Stockholm, deep in the bedrock exists a data center better than any high tech lair Hollywood could probably dream up. Bahnhof, one of Sweden's largest ISP's has created a bunker of high tech goodness that is surely to astound. The facility is called Pionen and once you get past the 16 inch thick entrance doors into the once nuclear bunker now converted to a data center, the spectacular sights that await are simply breathtaking. Force feedback has become commonplace in today's game controllers. To many, the simulated forces create a more realistic game-play environment. A group of scientists at the University of Tokyo in Japan are on working on a new technology that can potentially allow force feedback-type sensations and controller input without the need of a joystick or other physical input device at all--all feedback sensations and input could be done simply in "mid air." The scientists, Takayuki Iwamoto, Mari Tatezono, Takayuki Hoshi, and Hiroyuki Shinoda, have developed what they call an "Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display." Tactile feedback in "3D free space" is not necessarily a new concept: in the abstract for... Read more...
Today we’ve got a detailed look at Lenovo’s new ThinkPad X200.  Though it may appear that the X200 is an offshoot of Lenovo’s ThinkPad X300, the ThinkPad X200 is actually more of a successor and direct descendant of their ThinkPad X61 line.  This is clearly evident both in the X200's design and its specifications. Lenovo’s X300 tries to be as compact and feature-rich as possible, sacrificing raw computing power to present a fully featured notebook in an amazingly compact frame.   However, the X200, just like the X61 before it, takes the opposite approach, sacrificing some size and features to preserve compute power.  Built on Intel's new Centrino 2 platform, the ThinkPad... The Lenovo ThinkPad X300, released earlier this year, was quite an exciting product and Hot Hardware wasn't the only publication to award it an Editor's Choice (our review). With its svelte form-factor, LED backlighting, solid state hard drive and unique, ultra thin optical drive, the X300 is a standout product packed full of cutting edge technologies that is unmatched by many other notebooks in its class. Even Apple's lauded Macbook Air is no match, when it comes to pure utility and function. While the X300 may be a best-in-class product, with its relatively slow 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SL7100 processor and a $2,300 price tag, it probably isn't the most sensible purchase if power... Dell’s lineup of flat panel displays have proven themselves to be reliable, stylish, and typically right on par price-wise with some of the most inexpensive LCD monitors on the market. They’ve delivered exceptional bang for the buck, and throughout the years, they’ve managed to improve the quality of the screens and the overall feature sets while overall prices have gone down. While this is also true for the rest of the monitor industry, Dell has retained their reputation for reliability, which still sticks with them today. Sure, Dell displays don’t have the raw sexiness of Apple’s Cinema series displays, but they’re typically quite a bit cheaper while offering more functionality.Perhaps the... Read more...
We’re willing to bet that many of you have wildly varied opinions of Dell. Some no doubt consider them a huge, monolithic corporation who pushes out generic computers without a soul; while others consider them to be pioneers of the low-cost PC movement, who (almost) single-handedly made computers available to nearly every price point. No matter what your opinion of Dell as a company is, it is difficult to find many people in IT circles who dislike their monitor division. Dell’s lineup of flat panel displays have proven themselves to be reliable, stylish, and typically right on par price-wise with some of the most inexpensive LCD monitors on the market. We're writing to let you all know that we have just posted a new article at HotHardware in which we evaluate the new Asus Eee PC 900.  As most of you know, due to the success of the original Eee PCs, Asus followed up with numerous accessories and multi-colored models in the months after their initial release.  The follow-up units were essentially identical to the originals though, save for the different colored enclosures.  The first really major change to the Eee PC line-up would be the Eee PC 900, which was just introduced about two weeks ago.Although the new Eee PC 900 and Eee PC 700 series machines have similar hardware foundations, Asus has tweaked the 900 in a number of meaningful... Just in case you missed it, we're writing to let you all know that we have just posted a new article here at HotHardware in which we evaluate the features and performance of Lenovo's sleek ThinkPad X300 ultra portable notebook.  According to Lenovo, the ThinkPad X300 was designed to be the most efficient notebook the company has ever offered, with claims of a 25% reduction in power consumption in comparison to previous X-Series models.  To achieve this, Lenovo attempted a balancing act of sorts, equipping the X300 with a low power Core 2 Duo CPU, a Solid-State Drive and an LED backlit monitor.  The question is, has the focus on low power consumption come at too big a price, both... Do you remember the original Pentium 4? It launched at 1.5 GHz and gave us our first bittersweet taste of the NetBurst microarchitecture, which Intel would use to replace the P6 design. When the Pentium 4 began its life, Intel manufactured the chips on a 180 nm node. The 42 million transistors that went into those first Pentium 4s - internally referred to as Willamettes - occupied a die no less than 217 square millimeters. Keep those figures in mind throughout our overview of Intel’s newest mobile processor and platform. And don’t feel too old; eight years seems like a lifetime, when you’re talking tech.  Mobility, Redefined Smaller than a LaptopIntel is formally announcing a brand new... Read more...

Way back in late 2006, NVIDIA simultaneously unveiled a new flagship GPU and desktop chipset that became the foundation of what NVIDIA was calling the "ultimate gaming platform".  At the time, the combination of a pair of GeForce 8800 GTX graphics cards and an nForce 680i SLI-based motherboard was clearly the most powerful hardware combo available for gamers.  And here we are, nearly a year and a half later in early 2008, and still that combo is tough to beat; truly a testament to NVIDIA's engineering abilities and execution.Since the introduction of that version of NVIDIA's ultimate gaming platform, the company's product stack has changed quite a bit.  New GPUs have hit the...
