Star Citizen has been in development for several years now and it is still far from finished. However, gamers that bought into the upcoming interstellar game may soon have some new content to explore while they wait. A single-player campaign set in the Star Citizen universe known as Squadron 42 is set to be released in 2020. If you are unfamiliar with Star Citizen, it is an enormous MMO currently in development by Cloud Imperium Games. Work started on the game in 2011 with an initial release date set for 2014, but to-date the game has still not come to fruition. Parts of the game in the alpha stage of development have been released piecemeal over the years, but the game still remains far from... Read more...

Star Citizen is a game that has lured gamers that like simulations games to explore the depths of space and blow up fellow explorers for years now. The game made the news back in December of 2016 when the devs made the decision to dump Crytek's CryEngine and move the entire game over to Amazon Lumberyard. That move resulted in a suit for breach of contract being brought against Cloud Imperium Games by Crytek the following year. Star Citizen is in the news again for an insanely expensive in-game purchase that only the well-heeled will be able to afford. The in-game purchase is essentially a ready-made fleet that packs 117 different spacecraft into a pack along with lots of other items. There are... Read more...
The developers behind Star Citizen, the much hyped and still unreleased space trading and combat video game, are facing a lawsuit filed by Crytek over the use of its CryEngine game engine. Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) and Roberts Space Industries (RIS), both of which were co-founded by Chris Roberts, creator of the Wing Commander series, are each listed as defendants in the lawsuit. Crytek's claim is that it licensed its game engine to CIG at a below market rate in return for prominently displaying its trademark in Star Citizen and related marketing materials. Since then, CIG and RSI announced a switch from CryEngine 3 to Amazon's Lumberyard software. However, that's not Crytek's beef, or at least... Read more...
While much of the emphasis involving game development these days seems to revolve around DirectX 12, the competing Vulkan API has been lurking in the shadows, ready to strike at a moment's notice. Up to this point, there hasn't been a deluge of Vulkan-powered titles available, with DOOM, Dota 2, and The Talos Principle being the the most high-profile offerings. Soon, a massive addition is going join that list by way of Cloud Imperium Games' Star Citizen. This case is a bit different than most, though, because CIG doesn't just plan to support Vulkan, it plans to only support Vulkan. DX12? Get out of here! These plans were revealed by Star Citizen's lead graphics designer, Ali Brown.... Read more...
Cloud Imperium Games has decided to kick CryEngine to the curb and use Amazon's "ground breaking" Lumberyard engine to complete development Star Citizen, an upcoming first-person space combat simulation that started out as a crowdfunding campaign. Same goes for Squadron 45, the single-player experience set in the Star Citizen universe that is described as a "spiritual successor to Wing Commander." The switch from CryEngine to Lumberyard was first revealed in a new splash screen logo that appeared after applying the most recent alpha patch, version 2.6. An official statement was not far behind. "We’ve been working with Amazon for more than a year, as we have been looking for a technology leader... Read more...
