If you were hoping to get a HomePod smart speaker to round out the Apple hardware ecosystem in your home in time for Christmas, you will have to wait a bit longer. Apple originally unveiled HomePod way back in June at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, and said that it would ship in December. However, Apple today confirmed that HomePod will miss the holiday shopping rush. “We can’t wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple’s breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it’s ready for our customers," said Apple in a statement to TechCrunch. "We’ll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018.” Apple... Read more...
Perhaps Google should invest in a bumper sticker that reads, "My AI is an honor student," and then motor around Redmond and Cupertino where Microsoft and Apple are respectively headquartered. Compared to Bing and Siri, Google's artificial intelligent system is a cut above the competition, according to new research at Cornell University. Researchers Feng Liu, Yong Shi, and Ying Liu set out to test and rank the intelligence quotient (IQ) of various natural and artificial intelligent systems, including humans, Google, Bing, Baidu, and Siri. Based on the tests conducted, Google's AI has an IQ of 47.28. That ranks just below a six-year child with an IQ of 55.5, but is twice as high as Siri with an... Read more...
Apple may be at odds with Google when it comes to iOS versus Android, but it appears that the two can still find common ground on search. Google has been a long-time fixture in iOS and macOS as the default engine for Safari searches. However, Microsoft Bing has been the default provider for Siri queries, iOS Search and Spotlight on macOS. In a bid to provide a more consistent experience across all of its platforms and areas of search, Apple is kicking Bing to the curb, and has retained Google's services for nearly all areas of search (by default), with the sole exception being image searches via Siri. “Switching to Google as the web search provider for Siri, Search within iOS and Spotlight on... It turns out there is a very real downside to the many digital assistants that were designed to make our day-to-day lives easier. Researchers at Zhejiang University discovered it is possible to flex control over Siri, Alexa, and others using a technique called DolphinAttack. By translating voice commands into ultrasonic frequencies that are inaudible to the human ear, a hacker could instruct someone's smartphone or other device with a digital assistant to perform any number of tasks, such as visiting a malicious website. Apple and Amazon are the not the only companies affected by this. The vulnerability that makes this possible also affects voice assistants from Google (Google Now), Microsoft... Read more...
If you already find yourself glued to Apple's Siri assistant, then you may be glad to learn that it's only going to become an even bigger part of your life going forward. That is, as long as assumptions are correct with regards to the latest shuffling around of executive responsibilities at Apple. Since 2012, Apple's Senior VP of software and services Eddy Cue has been overlooking Siri. Cue has a long history with Apple, and much success to gloat about. He's played an important role in securing streaming deals with content companies, and if that's not enough of a job in itself, he also oversees iCloud. In a subtle change made to the biography pages at Apple's website, we learn that the company's... Read more...
So, what did Apple do with those old design models for the Mac Pro? Apparently, it used them to create the HomePod, which is Apple’s take on the smart speaker movement that is sweeping the tech world. The HomePod is a “Breakthrough Home Speaker” first and foremost that measures less than seven inches tall and features seven beam-forming tweeters at the bottom of the device and an Apple-designed woofer for rich bass. As you might expect, HomePod has full support for voice controls with deep Siri integration, which would put it in the same league as the Amazon Echo and Google Home; albeit with far superior audio more in line with Sonos products. An array of six microphones are included the HomePod,... Read more...
By the numbers, Apple's bread and butter is still the iPhone, which accounted for more than $33 billion of its $52.9 billion in revenue during the second quarter of 2017. That is all well and good, but having a diversified portfolio of products could help Apple get by on a rainy day, should that day ever come, and one sector the company is reportedly expanding into is the smart home speaker market. This could happen as soon as this summer.Citing people who are supposedly familiar with Apple's plans, Bloomberg says Apple might debut its Amazon Echo rival its annual developer conference (WWDC) in June. However, it would be more of an official unveiling than a hard launch—those same inside sources... Read more...

Others, not so much. Falling into the "others" category is an online prank attempting to trick iPhone owners into engaging Siri, the virtual digital assistant built into iOS, in a way that could land them in jail. Police warn of social media posts instructing iPhone owners to ask Siri... Read more...
For better or worse, parting with your money just got a heck of a lot easier on iOS devices. All you have to do is bark a command to Siri to the effect of, "Hey Siri, send my brother Todd $50 using PayPal" and she will happily coordinate the transfer, simple as that. Siri will ask for confirmation, of course, just like when sending a text message, but answer in the affirmative and little brother Todd will be the happy recipient of a wad of online cash. The new voice-activated functionality is baked into the latest version of PayPal's mobile app on iOS. Anyone with an iPhone or iPad running iOS 10 later can download and install the latest build and start sending money using voice commands. On... Read more...
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are two of the fastest growing fields right now, especially with companies putting so much time and effort into developing digital personal assistants. Count Apple among them. In a move that could have big implications for Siri, Apple went out and hired a well known AI researchers from Caregie Mellon University. Russ Salakhutdinov broke the news on Twitter saying he's excited to serve as Apple's new director of AI research. He also made a pitch for others with experience in the field to apply for a job on his team. Salakhutdinov and Apple are specifically looking for research scientists with a proven track record in a variety of machine learning... Read more...
It can be argued that Apple kicked off the digital assistant craze nearly five years ago when it baked Siri into iOS 5 and promoted it as a major feature of the iPhone 4S, but it's Amazon's Echo that everyone is gunning for. Google's taking a direct approach with Google Home, a Wi-Fi connected smart speaker, and apparently so will Apple, which also might open up Siri to app developers by releasing a software development kit (SDK).The latter is the more immediate step Apple is considering, according to a paywalled report by The Information, which cites "a person with direct knowledge of the effort." Developers who want their apps to be accessible through Siri will have their chance following Apple's... Read more...
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is gearing up for a massive leap in capabilities in the coming years as companies like Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Tesla and countless others invest millions (if not billions) of dollars into developing customer-facing products. Dag Kittlaus, one of the brilliant minds behind the original Siri AI assistant (before Apple bought the company), has publicly unveiled Viv which looks to far outshine its predecessor. Rather than the limited number of search categories that AI virtual assistants like Siri are capable of responding to (ask Siri a question that she doesn’t understand — no matter how simple — and she will simply open a web search), Viv takes on Skynet-esque... Here's a tip for anyone who owns a smartphone (so pretty much everybody)—don't leave your handset out in the open and unattended, even if you've locked it. Case in point, an online video making the rounds showed how it was possible to bypass an iPhone's passcode using Siri to access the device's contacts and photos. The hack, if you want to call it that, was made possible by a rather odd bug in iOS 9.3.1. For it to work, Siri must have access to the iPhone owner's Twitter account. The handset must also support Force Touch, limiting the vulnerability to iPhone 6s and iPhone 6S Plus models. And the last requirement is finding a Twitter post containing someone's email address. If all those factors... Read more...
Apple helped the change the way we interact with our smartphones when it introduced (not invented) Siri, the digital assistant that responds to voice commands. Whether it's firing off a text message or looking up the weather in Timbuktu, Siri can do it. She can do many things, actually, though up until recently, Siri wasn't of much help to victims of sexual assault. As of a March 17 update, Siri now understands and reacts to phrases like "I was raped" and "I am being abused." Someone who's been the victim of a sexual crime may not know what resources are available outside of calling the police. Siri's response to such situations is to direct victims to the National Sexual Assault Hotline with... Read more...
Anyone that has used an iPhone or iPad in the past few years should be pretty familiar with the Siri digital assistant. Siri, which was initially introduced on the iPhone 4S back in 2011, has grown in its capabilities over the course of its 4-year lifespan and has recently been expanded to the Apple Watch and Apple TV platforms. But according to a new report from a man well-connected with the inner workings of Apple, Mark Gurman, Siri will finally make its way to the Mac platform later this year with the introduction of OS X 10.12. The only thing surprising about this revelation is why it has taken Apple so long to come to this decision, as implementing the feature seems like it would be trivial... Read more...
Not long after Apple unveiled its Siri personal assistant to the world, people began asking her outrageous questions, sometimes inappropriate or just humorous, if for no other reason than they just could. When creating Cortana, Microsoft was well-aware of what its digital assistant was going to have to deal with. As as result, Cortana was designed in such a way to handle abuse or inappropriate questions in a rather specific, simple manner. According to Microsoft's Deborah Harrison, who is one of eight writers for Cortana, a chunk of the earliest queries were about Cortana's sex life. Over time, it was discovered that different people have many different ways of interacting with bots and digital... Read more...
The first thing we teach new drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Solid advice, albeit increasingly challenging with all these newfangled technologies at our disposable, including in-vehicle luxuries. To help drivers from becoming distracted with technology, Ford is pushing out a software update that will add Siri Eyes-Free functionality to more than 5 million SYNC-equipped vehicles. Siri Eyes-Free allows drivers to communicate with Apple's digital assistant by long-pressing the voice recognition button on the steering wheel. It's equivalent to holding down the home button on iPhone and iPad devices to wake Siri up, and once awoken in SYNC-enabled vehicles, drivers can... Read more...
Let me start by saying that Siri and I have a solid relationship. If I need directions to a place I've never been before or a reminder set, she dutifully obliges every single time. I like that. But if Siri turns on me and starts sharing my personal info without my permission, as a major security firm says is possible, we're going to have problems. Trend Micro, makers of self-named antivirus solutions, points to a flaw in Siri's software that takes only seconds to exploit. In doing so, anyone can tap into a Siri-enabled iOS device and get access to the owner's full name, email, phone number, and a photo of that person, regardless of whether the device is locked. And that's just the tip of the... Read more...
The Internet is abuzz over a new generation Apple TV set-top box that is rumored to be coming out in September. If what's said about the new streaming device turns out to be true, the next generation model will be a significant upgrade over the currently shipping model with an improved remote control in tow.According to BuzzFeed's unnamed sources who are supposedly familiar with Apple's plans, the upgraded Apple TV box will be thinner and sport new hardware inside -- most notably, it will be built around Apple's A8 System-on-Chip (SoC). It will also sport more internal storage, an improved operating system, and support for Siri voice control. This will be the first refresh since 2012. In addition... Read more...
In early March, managing director of Microsoft Research managing editor Eric Horvitz hinted that the Cortana digital assistant would be making its way to both iOS and Android platforms after being a Windows Phone exclusive for quite some time (it has also found a home in Windows 10). Microsoft made that news official in late May, confirming that the world’s two top mobile operating systems would receive Cortana support. The iOS and Android Cortana apps were supposed to debut later this month alongside the retail launch of Windows 10, but the Android app has leaked early and can be download right now as an APK. As you might expect, Cortana functionality on Android for the most part mirrors what... Read more...
Apple's Siri has long been fodder for tales of the miscommunications variety, most of them laced with humor of one ilk or another. The latest reported Siri easter egg, though, fails to bring the funny, and instead results in an immediate and very serious call to the cops. Recent posts on Facebook, Twitter, and in other social media hubs have suggested that iPhone users looking for a spark of entertainment should ask Siri about the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Instead of hilarity and smiles all around, however (as if someone could find any kind of glee in the subject, anyway), those opting to engage Siri in such a request are finding themselves quickly connected to 911 emergency services. So a gag... Read more...
Apple recently slashed the price of its Apple TV media streamer for $99 to $69 earlier this month. The price cut was a long time coming, as Apple’s “premier” media streamer hasn’t seen a significant update in years (the current generation was introduced way back in March 2012) and there are other more functional streamers (namely the Amazon Fire TV and the Roku 3) available to consumers. About the only thing that Apple TV offers over the competition currently is tight integration with the Apple ecosystem and exclusive (for a limited time) HBO Now support. Today, we’re hearing word that some new hardware is finally in store for the Apple TV. First and foremost, the processor inside the device... Read more...
