What good is a file server if you can't store files on it?  Uh, huh.  Microsoft has posted a Knowledge Base article, KB946676, which warns of file corruption issues with Windows Home Server. "When you use certain programs to edit files on a home computer that uses Windows Home Server, the files may become corrupted when you save them to the home server," Microsoft said in a support document posted last week. The document went on to list the software, which includes Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, OneNote 2003, OneNote 2007, Outlook 2007, Microsoft Money 2007 and SyncToy 2.0 Beta. Microsoft's download servers must be on overload this week. First Office 2007 SP1, then Windows XP SP3 RC1, and now Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) have gone public.Microsoft was vague this week about when Windows Vista SP1 RC1 would be available, but based on the other two releases yesterday, it was going to be soon, and here it is. You use Windows Update to download it, but first you have to download a tool from the site above to "mark" your machine as eligible for SP1. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC is available through Windows Update. Experience the WU based Vista SP1 installation by following 4 simple steps.I'm assuming that when SP1 is released they'll be a standalone installer... Read more...
A U.S. Grand Jury has issued subpoenas to Toshiba and their U.S. partner, San Disk, in regards to claims of price-fixing.  While these two are both very well known brands here in the U.S., they are only part of the investigation which covers more than 20 companies:“The filing said 23 other companies were also sued for the same reason.NAND flash memory is used in digital cameras and music players such as Apple Inc's iPod.”It does seem a bit far-fetched that a group of 23 businessmen from different corporations would be able to collude long enough to fix prices without shareholders or financial analysts catching on.  Add to that the various bitter rivalries in some corners of the tech industry... Apple recently made an announcement that its iTunes online music service has reached the 3-billion-downloaded-songs mark. In fact, Apple’s iTunes Store recently outshined both Amazon and Target and took the number three spot in the list of America’s largest music retailers. Apple’s vice president of iTunes, Eddy Cue, stated, “‘We’d like to thank all of our customers who have contributed to this incredible milstone.’” Some may feel that the 3 billion mark isn’t such a big deal. After all, iTunes was started about many years ago, and at 99 cents per song, the revenues generated would be a little under $3 billion over a period of about 6 years. On the other hand, we shouldn’t forget that iTunes... Read more...

Home users and Small Business owners can often benefit from technologies that are normally out of reach for some general consumers. Home users may benefit from having a file server for sharing media, transferring large files between PCs, or even remote access while away. Small Office users can utilize the same features as well, while also benefiting from automated backup capabilities, centralized printer management, or even hosting a domain. The problem is, many of these things often require a level of understanding or experience that many home or SOHO users may lack or simply may not have the time to learn.  For larger businesses, network administrators... Much of the professional sports world has some kind of drug testing system in place, but there hasn't really ever been talk about drug use in the Cyberathlete Professional League. While drugs and alcohol have always been banned from the league, there wasn't much in the way of what to do with suspected abusers. The new 2007 terms have been changed though, and the CPL now reserves the right to conduct drug testing at its own discretion. This only applies to those who are believed to be breaking the rules, and the CPL will not be drug all participants in the event.
