With Intel's recent launch of the Centrino 2 mobile platform, aka Montevina, you can be sure virtually all of the major notebook OEMs have been peddling their wares in an effort to hit the ground running during the back to school season this fall.  First out of the gate, delivering a Montevina thin-and-light to our labs, is Lenovo with their ever-popular, consistently well-built ThinkPad series.  The X200 is here.  All .8 inches thick and just under 3lbs of it...         In typical fashion Lenovo has engineered the X200 with clean, simple lines and a fit and finish second to none, as far as business class notebooks go.  This machine also just sips... You'll recall that in February security researchers found a way to break into encrypted hard drives by using a trick that relies on the fact that RAM dissipates its contents slower if cooled. The research paper, by Princeton, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Wind River Systems was titled "Lest We Remember: Cold Boot Attacks on Encryption Keys" (.PDF").  Over the weekend, timed to coincide with the Last HOPE hacker conference over the weekend in New York, the source code was published to the Web.Of course, this technique only works if the laptop hasn't already been turned off, which would have enabled the memory to fully dissipate.  This probably isn't the method most people on... An interesting new conspiracy theory has arisen today. It appears that several laptop OEMs have been having "issues" with their sound card drivers: specifically, the Stereo Mix option is missing from their drivers, which basically means you can't record audio (except from Mic In). Whoops! Is this a case of Dell and others working with the RIAA? A ripten writer noticed this on his Dell laptop. Linkage between Dell (and other OEMs) and the RIAA were posited an obvious theory. Now, while we wouldn't put it past the RIAA to do this, we have what's probably a more likely theory: driver bug. Notably, these incidents seem to have occurred on laptops using a SigmaTel sound card. SigmaTel pretty much... Read more...

As if Microsoft needed to hear more Windows XP SP3 problems.  You'd almost think they did this on purpose, as we know they'd rather all of us upgrade to Vista.  Nah.According to reports posted the day after Microsoft launched Windows XP SP3 on Windows Update, some users found that their network cards and previously-crafted connections had mysteriously vanished from Windows after updating to the service pack."The Network Connections screen now does not show any of the NIC cards. The folks over at UMPC Fever have got their hands on one of the very first-to-market, Intel Atom processor-based MIDs (Mobile Internet Device). It is the Aigo MID, which they claim is the Asian version of the Gigabyte M528 we'll be seeing shortly in the U.S.:"Apart from the interior Intel Atom processor, my first impression on aigo MID is it's size and weight! It is a real small and light and even lighter than Raon Digital Everun which is the smallest UMPC I've played before! When you holding it, it is just like you are holding a PSP or NDS but with a x86 processing power! My HTC TyTN II weights ~200g and aigo MID is just 352g but with a larger screen size (4.8 in 800 x 480 res.) and full function... Read more...

The ISP network throttling debate continues on Capital Hill: News.com reports that two Democratic Congressmen, John Conyers from Michigan and Zoe Lofgren from California, have introduced new legislation designed to prevent network providers from prioritizing Internet traffic and content.Just like last time, the bill would rewrite U.S. antitrust law to prohibit network operators like AT&T and Comcast from blocking, impairing, or discriminating against "lawful" Internet content, applications, and services or charging extra fees for "prioritization or enhanced quality of service.""The Internet was designed without centralized control, without gatekeepers for content and services," Conyers said... Intel is planning to release the successor the popular P35 chipset in a few weeks, the aptly named P45.  From a feature standpoint, the P35 and P45 are somewhat similar.  But the P45 will have official support for 1,600MHz FSB processors, PCI Express 2.0, and the chipset is being manufactured 65nm as opposed to 90nm, which should being power consumption and heat down a bit.  The P45 will also be paired up with a new ICH10-series southbridge, which offers more SATA connectivity.Asus showed off a few P45-based motherboards at CeBit a while back, but they weren't quite ready for prime time.  We have, however, just gotten our hands on the retail-ready version of the Asus P5Q Deluxe,...
