We recently had the chance to spend some time with the folks at Maingear HQ and built a beautiful, water-cooled AMD Rzyen 3000-based rig. That system was destined for Dave’s lab and has become his daily workhorse – in fact, that rig produced the video you’ll see below. Intel announced its Optane Memory H10 back during the Consumer Electronics Show, early this year. Just in case you missed the initial announcement, the company's Optane Memory H10 is a new class of products from Intel that combines 3D Xpoint memory technology and QLC (quad-level cell) 3D NAND flash on a single M.2 device. The goal for the product is to offer the benefits of 3D Xpoint and Optane Memory in conjunction with the affordability and speed of a QLC-based NVMe SSD in a single device. Intel today is providing hard specs for what it is calling next-generation of Optane memory that has been specifically optimized for thin and light notebooks. Enter Optane Memory H10, which is a new PCIe 3.0x4 NVMe-based 2-in-1 storage “gum stick” that combines Intel’s ultra-fast Optane memory with the company’s QLC 3D NAND. Intel has made an impressive showing in the SSD market with its Optane family, which is based on 3D XPoint memory technology. Intel makes available Optane Memory -- available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities -- that is used to cache frequently accessed data in your operating system along with Optane SSDs, which are available for consumer, enthusiast, and enterprise applications. Intel is upping the ante in the enthusiast storage space again, with a brand-new 3D Xpoint-based drive called the Optane SSD 905P. As its name implies, the Optane SSD 905P isn’t a major departure from the Optane SSD 900P that was released a few month back, but Intel was worked a bit of magic to improve performance in a few ways. Intel just announced the availability of its Optane SSD 905P, which is in essence a higher performance version of the Optane SSD 900P we reviewed here not long ago. There are two SKUs being launched today, and they fall within Intel's Mansion Beach family of storage products. There will be a 960GB SKU priced at $1,299, while a smaller capacity 480GB SKU rings in at $599. The high-end Optane SSD 905P 960GB is available in a Half Height Half Length (HHHL) PCIe add-in form-factor. On the other hand, the Optane SSD 905P 480GB is only available in a 2.5-inch form-factor with U.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 interface. And as you might expect, both SSDs employ Intel 3D XPoint memory technology... Intel is launching its latest Optane-branded family of solid state drives today, the Intel Optane SSD 800P. Unlike the Intel Optane Memory devices, which accelerate hybrid storage configurations through intelligent data caching, or the Optane SSD 900P that’s aimed squarely at hardcore enthusiasts with big budgets, the Intel Optane 800P targets the meat of the mobile and desktops markets, with higher capacities than Optane Memory, but much more affordable pricing than the 900P. Intel gave us a taste of what its Optane could do on consumer desktop systems a few months back when it launched its Optane Memory technology. Those miniscule drives did a great job caching data to give compatible systems packing slower hard drives a huge boost in responsiveness and overall performance. The performance characteristics of Optane Memory also left many enthusiasts chomping at the bit for higher-capacity, speedier Optane SSDs for high-end desktops, however. Fortunately, the wait is now over. Intel Optane Memory is designed to accelerate the storage subsystem on compatible machines, to improve transfer speeds and reduce latency. It is among the first products to leverage 3D XPoint memory technology that was co-developed by Intel and Micron. 3D XPoint offers many of the same properties as NAND flash memory, but with much higher endurance and certain performance characteristics that are similar to DRAM. When Intel unveiled its Optane memory solution this week, it seemed like an ideal performance pick-me-up for low-end rigs. Its goal is to cache all of your important bits so as to make the PC more responsive, and quicker in general. The fact that Intel itself promotes the current Optane solution at those using mechanical hard drives is additional proof that low-end PCs are being targeted. However, as we now learn, there is one important caveat to be aware of: while Optane requires a Kaby Lake processor to work, the low-end Celeron and Pentium variants are out-of-luck. Early last week, Intel revealed its Optane SSD DC P4800X featuring 3D Xpoint memory technology. The Optane SSD DC P4800X is an enterprise-class product, targeted at data centers and mission-critical applications where reliable, ultra-low-latency access to large amounts of data is paramount.
