League of Legends just reached a major milestone. 100 million people now actively play the world’s most popular online game on a monthly basis. This means that more people around the globe play League of Legends than stream movies and television shows on streaming services like Netflix. Riot Games co-founder Brandon “Ryze” Beck, remarked, “It was all about pouring everything we could into that competitive experience to make it as good as it could possibly be. We’ve kind of been in a reactionary mode. When it comes to the video game industry, no other game comes close to the success, and install base, that League of Legends has. Developed by Riot Games and released back in 2009, the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game is estimated to boast around 67 million monthly players and according to Riot, their success is because of the company’s focus on player experience over revenue that, according to market research firm SuperData, could net them $1 billion in 2014. Lizard Squad has been on a DDoS attack rampage for the past couple of weeks with Sony’s PlayStation Network, Blizzard’s Battle.net, League of Legends, and NCSoft all succumbing to its attacks with Twitch being its latest target. However, it appears that Lizard Squad’s activities may be curtailed if reports are true. The FBI has been hunting down the person, or persons, responsible not only for the DDoS attack but the grounding of a plane when the group tweeted a false bomb threat as well. During the weekend the gaming industry has been suffering from a barrage of DDoS attacks. Blizzard’s Battle.net, League of Legends, and Sony’s PlayStation Network are just some of the games and services that have experienced unexpected downtime. However, it appears one hacker group is claiming responsibility for all of these attacks and more. A group called Lizard Squad has been claiming responsibility for bringing down Battle.net, League of Legends, NCSoft, and Sony’s PlayStation Network over the past week on its Twitter account.
