Dell's Vostro lineup never has been flashy. Instead, it has relied on an all-business approach that keeps costs down, style at a minimum and specs decent. The latest in the family, the Vostro 1220, follows right in line by offering a decent array of specifications at a price that's certainly respectable. The 12.1" ultraportable is tailor made for those who can't quite see themselves using a minuscule netbook. According to Dell, the laptop was designed exclusively for business travelers who are unwilling to compromise performance, battery life and security for a thin and lightweight design. The unit itself can be ordered in Obsidian Black or Deep Cherry Red, and it weighs in at just 3.36 pounds.... Read more...
Maine may be about as far from Cupertino as one can get in America, but there's still a serious connection between the state and company. In an effort to distribute even more OS X-based machines to students within its public school system, Maine has ordered up 64,000 additional Apple notebooks for schools. In case you couldn't guess, Maine is the only state in America that provides laptops to every last public school student. The move was part of the Department of Education's decision to expand the Maine Learning Technology Initiative into all public high schools, a program that has been ongoing since 2002. Apple competed with an undisclosed amount of other computer makers for the first and latest... Read more...
We're not sure what's up with all of these companies busting out "back-to-school" machines in late June, but we're downright saddened by it. While kids attempt to enjoy their summer break, firms like Toshiba are helping them remember that next term is just months away. Today, Toshiba has revealed a new slate of notebooks, the Satellite A, M, P and U Series machines.According to the company, The Satellite M and Satellite U Series offer great multimedia performance and everyday mobility, while the more powerful Satellite A and Satellite P Series, deliver an excellent platform for powering HD entertainment. The new Satellite laptop models are available today in both Intel and AMD CPU configurations,... Read more...
Seriously Gateway, don't spill all of your surprises at once! For the third time in the past 24 hours, Gateway is introducing a new machine. This time, it's the company's first-ever 11.6" netbook, the LT3100. As netbooks continue to inch closer and closer to ultraportables, this 11.6" version weighs in at 3.14lbs. and arrives with an AMD Athlon CPU, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a full-size keyboard and an Ultrabright high-def (1366x768) widescreen display.Specifically, you'll find an Athlon 64 L110 CPU, ATI's Radeon X1270 graphics, 2GB of DDR2 memory and up to 250GB of hard drive space. The six cell battery also promises up to five hours of life, but as we've learned, we'd expect real world performance to... Read more...
Gateway's on a roll, and we're in no position to stop them. Shortly after introducing a new pair of back-to-school desktops, the company has unveiled a new NV Series notebook. Said machine is described as "a workhorse entertainment notebook that pairs the latest notebook technologies and important one-touch buttons with excellent style at an affordable price," and with a starting tag of just $499.99, we'd say that's pretty accurate.Starting with a 15.6" LED display, a 1366x768 resolution and Dolby Sound Room technology, this machine features an HDMI output, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a one-touch MyBackup button and a nifty 'PowerSave' button that gives users the ability to switch to a lower-power, energy... Asustek Corporation has just launched their G51Vx and G60Vx mecha-inspired gaming laptops as a a follow-up to their successful G50Vt line of machines. The laptops, previewed just last month at Computex come in 15.6- and 16-inch formats and look like something you’d find in a Transformers movie – no coincidence there, we presume – with a suggestive techno look thanks to a backlit keyboard and some LED lighting on the LCD frame – which, by the way, is pure white with a metallic grey glossy finish. According to the specifications, these two laptops are looking to be multimedia powerhouses, powered by Core 2 Quad or Core 2 Duo processors, in addition to a GeForce GTX 260M with 1GB of GDDR3.... HP's "Mini" line of netbooks emerged quite some time ago, and while it has basically remained true to its roots, we're glad to see the line evolving somewhat to react to changes in demand. The Hewlett-Packard Mini 5101 is a more business-like machine, one's that classically styled and plenty powerful for the average business user. The 2.6lb. magnesium chassis is sturdy and should handle airport transfers just fine, while the 10.1" LED display boasts a WXVGA or HD resolution panel. Other specs include a six-cell battery, 7200RPM hard drive (or optional 80GB/128GB SSD), optional mobile broadband card, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, a 2MP webcam and nice selection of ports. This machine starts at $449, but... Read more...
It's hard to believe that the machine we'll be inspecting in the pages ahead is actually real and shipping. It's not so much a feat of engineering as it is a feat in product development. You see, we just wrapped up our evaluation of Asus' 1008HA Seashell three weeks ago, and already we're being treated to the second "Seashell" model to ship stateside. The 1005HA is undoubtedly a member of the expanding Eee PC lineup, and while it's numbered lower than the aforesaid 1008HA, there are actually a few aspects that we prefer on this model versus its predecessor. Actually, maybe predecessor isn't the proper term; it's not like the 1005HA is taking the place of the 1008HA. In fact, we envision... Read more...
Just days after Apple started to ship its newest lineup of MacBook Pro units, the company has already issued a firmware update. Why so fast, you ask? For whatever reason, Apple decided to ship some of its hard drive-based MacBook Pro units with a SATA drive interface pegged at "just" 1.5Gbps. Apple followers would know that the non-Pro 13" MacBook--which the 13" MacBook Pro replaced--didn't have such a limitation. Needless to say, a standard hard drive wouldn't be bothered by such a limit, but if you ever decide to replace the stock HDD with a solid state drive, you just might run into a bottleneck. A small cadre of consumers were evidently vocal enough to convince Apple to change things, and... Read more...

Had enough of Acer's Aspire netbooks? Good, because the company has just revealed two new machines that are about as far as one can get from small, light and underpowered. How many times have you perused a notebook review here or elsewhere on the net, taken an educated look at the manufacturers' claimed battery life specifications and thought to yourself, "yeah right"?  Let's be real now, shall we?  Most times our Tech Editors here at HotHardware find that a many notebooks fall well short of specified expected battery life.  And only a select few of the major players are smart enough to use careful wording like "up to 6 hours" of battery life or just specify battery capacity in mAh (milliamp hour) numbers.  Smart HotHardware readers know that in reality, battery life often falls well short of what manufacturers will either specify directly or... Intel's pervasive Core i7 CPU has certainly made the rounds at this point, but it has yet to find too many homes within notebooks. Always looking to stay one step ahead of the other guys, CyberPower has introduced the Core i7-equipped Xplorer X7-Xtreme S1, the first laptop from the outfit to sport one of these slabs of silicon. It's also based around the X58 chipset for handling those intense gaming sessions, and speaking of which, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPU should handle most everything on the market today.Other specifications include a 17" WUXGA (1920x1200), FireWire, HDMI port, 3.1MP webcam, 6GB of memory, Bluetooth, a 7-in-1 card reader, optional SSD and even a Blu-ray drive. In other... Read more...
Lenovo is a company that offers a wide range of notebooks. From multimedia notebooks, to gaming notebooks, to value notebooks to netbooks, Lenovo has their bases adequately covered. We've spent some time with a few of the company's prior offerings, but we've never quite seen a product like this. The simplistic G530 is a computer that's easily overlooked. It's not flashy, the model name isn't memorable and the specification sheet has nothing on it that will immediately grab your attention. But what this machine lacks in pizzazz it makes up for in value, so it follows logic that the G530 is a critical pillar in the somewhat undercover Value '3000' notebook line at Lenovo. With our test model... Read more...
Man, talk about depressing. Some students aren't even out for summer break yet, and already Hewlett-Packard is issuing systems for next school year. For whatever reason, the HP Pavilion dv2z and the Pavilion dv6t notebooks are ushering in what we can only imagine to be the summer leg of year-round school, with the former checking in at least than 1-inch thick and boasting a 12.1" LED panel. Furthermore, it packs an optional Blu-ray drive, 500GB HDD, a dual-core AMD CPU, discrete graphics and a starting tag of $599.The dv6t (starts at $649) arrives with HP's own MediaSmart software, a 16" LED display, HD playback support and a separate numeric keypad. Furthermore, there's the HP Pavilion dv6z... Read more...
We’ve seen plenty of gaming notebooks that are meant to dazzle potential customers with outrageous designs, ultra high-resolution displays, twin GPUs, and quad-core processors. The MSI GT627-216US isn’t such a notebook. Instead, the GT627-216US takes a more subdued approach to offer budget-minded gamers a powerful machine at an affordable price.Although the MSI GT627-216US may take a budget-minded approach, it doesn’t skimp on what’s important to gamers, namely the graphics card. The NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS at the heart of this notebook helps it to produce more than respectable scores in many gaming benchmarks. In addition, the GT627-216US has an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 processor and... Read more...
Currently, there aren't very man netbooks (or notebooks, for that matter) out there with both an HDD and an SSD within, but those systems just got a tiny bit less rare. NEC has today announced its LaVie Light line of machines, making it the first Japanese PC maker to craft a netbook with an SSD + HDD system. A grand total of three machines will be launched in the LaCie Light line: the BL350/TA is the big winner, with the operating system loaded onto the SSD (for speed) and the HDD left empty for applications, media and other things that are less urgent. The BL300/TA and the BL310/TA both have a 160GB hard drive and no SSD. Currently, there are no prices listed for any of the three, though they... Read more...
Another month, another entrant in the rapidly expanding netbook arena. Believe it or not, the Mini NB205 is actually Toshiba's first-ever netbook to ship to America, and while the company has been shipping miniature notebooks overseas for awhile, it evidently felt the time right to jump on it here in the USA. The Mini NB205 is said to be a "companion PC," but it brings along a full-size keyboard, large touchpad and a battery that can last for nine hours. As with many other netbooks, this one also features a 10.1" LCD-backlit display, Windows XP and a hard drive impact sensor that guards data from becoming corrupted. Outside of that, Toshiba offers two special configurations. The NB205-N310 includes... Read more...
Mobile gamers, the bar has just been raised. For weeks now, Dell/Alienware have been teasing a new gaming notebook that was said to be "All Powerful." One thing's for sure now that the company has made it official: it's amongst the most powerful we've ever seen. Utilizing no fewer than three NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, the 17" M17x is -- at least according to Dell -- the "most powerful laptop in the universe."Without question, this is also one of the largest notebooks known to man, with a starting weight of nearly 12 pounds and a thickness of over 2 inches. In other words, this thing stretches the mere meaning of "portable." There's also an Anodized Aluminum Industrial Design, a personalized laser engraved... Read more...
Dell's Studio line is a hit. It's a drastic departure from the plain, boring enclosures that the PC maker offered for so long, and it's obviously picking up traction in the market. Hot on the heels of its ultra-small Studio XPS 13, the all new Studio 14z is aimed at the tech-savvy student and the multimedia lover alike, and just about anyone in between. Packing a spacious 500GB hard drive option and a shell that looks like a mix of a Mini 9 and Studio XPS 16, this new notebook aims to fill a noticeable void in the outfit's Studio line. As the name implies, the machine includes a 14" LED display with HD resolution (720p/900p), and the frame itself measures between .79" and 1.2" thick. Within,... Read more...
