United States Vice President Mike Pence announced earlier this year that they hoped the get astronauts on the surface of the moon within the next five years. Amazon is scouting locations for its second North American headquarters (HQ2), and today, the company narrowed down the finalists to 20 metropolitan areas. A total of 238 communities submitted proposals to be in the running for the honor to host what would be a huge investment from Amazon. Amazon says that it will "work with each of the candidate locations to dive deeper into their proposals, request additional information, and evaluate the feasibility of a future partnership that can accommodate the company’s hiring plans as well as benefit its employees and the local community." Jeff Bezos has just joined a very exclusive club. The Amazon founder is the newest member of the $100 billion club after increasing his fortune by $2.4 billion to $100.3 billion. Shares of the world's largest online retailer jumped more than 2 percent on the expectation that Amazon will report a big uptick in Black Friday sales figures, compared to prior years. In doing so, Bezos' own net worth went up as well. Early indications point to optimism on the part of investors as being justified. According to data from Adobe Analytics, online purchases on Black Friday collectively jumped 18.4 percent year-over-year. With Amazon being the top destination for online shopping, it is the web-based retailer... Read more...
Amazon stock has been on a winning streak over the past month, and that upward momentum means that there is a shakeup afoot when it comes to the ranking of the world’s richest people. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has consistently been at the top (or near the top) of the list, thanks to his [still] heavy investment in the company’s stock, for the past three decades. However, Amazon’s stock performance — capped off by another surge this morning — means that CEO Jeff Bezos is now ranked as the world’s richest person. Amazon shares are up over 2 percent this morning (to $1,078 as of this writing), and Bezos holds roughly 80 million shares in his company. This would push Bezos’ net worth to about... Read more...

Perhaps one day space travel for tourism will be a common thing. In the here and now, there are select few companies pushing the idea, including Blue Origin, a privately-funded aerospace manufacturer and spaceflight services firm founded and run by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. For the right amount of money—a lot of money, no doubt—you can book a flight to space as a tourist, just make sure you go tinkle before hopping on board New Shepard, the space vehicle that will lift you above the skies. While early space tourism is separated by wealth—Blue Origin's ticket prices have not yet been announced, though competitor Virgin Galactic charges up to a quarter of a million dollars—Mother Nature (and anatomy)... Jeff Bezos has just offered a glimpse of the Blue Origin's New Shepard space tourism capsule.Bezos recently remarked, “Our New Shepard flight-test program is focused on demonstrating the performance and robustness of the system. In parallel, we've been designing the capsule interior with an eye toward precision engineering, safety and comfort.” The New Shepard features seats that can be tilted back so the passengers can look up as the rocket lifts off. Is that Megatron walking the streets? Nope, it is just Jeff Bezos piloting a massive robot named Method-2 at the Amazon Machine Learning Automation, Robotics and Space Exploration (MARS) conference. Bezos recently tweeted, “I just got to pilot an awesome (and huge) robot thanks to Hankook Mirae Technology. Nice! #MARS2017”. The 13-foot, 1.5-ton Method-2 was created by robotics expert Vitaly Bulgarov. Bulgarov has worked on films such as Transformers, Robocop and the Terminator series alongside South Korean company Hankook Mirae Technology. Norman Vincent Peale once said, "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." Amazon boss Jeff Bezos is taking that advice literally, and he's hoping the United States government will help him in his endeavor. In a proposal sent to the Trump administration, Bezos explains his interest in developing a lunar spacecraft and setting up shop near a crater at the south pole. Welcome to a world where upstart space entrepreneurship is now a thing. The proposal Bezos sent is tied to Blue Origin, a privately funded space company he founded back in September 2000. What Bezos wants is for the government to back a shipment service to the moon that would not be unlike Amazon's shipment... Read more...
When it comes to smartphones, we can only remember a few recent outright flops that were not only rejected by the tech community, but also general consumers. There was the ill-conceived Microsoft Kin, the HTC First “Facebook Phone” and more recently, the Amazon Fire Phone. In late 2014, Amazon took a $170 million charge on unsold Fire Phone inventory and ended up canning dozens of employees from its Lab126 “skunkworks” division that developed the smartphone.Credit: Flickr - Steve Jurvetson But if you thought that the Fire Phone was an epic fail from Amazon, you haven’t seen anything yet. In an interview with The Washington Post, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos takes pride in his company’s failures (no... Read more...

Blue Origin New ShepardA new space race is taking place today, and it’s being dominated by Silicon Valley companies looking to make space travel more affordable for military, commercial and civilian launches. In November, we saw Blue Origin’s New Shepard space launch system make an incredible voyage to a suborbital height of 62 miles, and then safely land its BE-3 rocket back to Earth. At the time, Elon Musk congratulated Blue Origin (which is helmed by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos) for its accomplishment, but noted that what SpaceX was trying to achieve with its reusable Dragon 9 rockets was a much harder feat and not directly comparable. Congrats to Jeff Bezos and the BO team for achieving VTOL on... Read more...
