Amazon is scouting locations for its second North American headquarters (HQ2), and today, the company narrowed down the finalists to 20 metropolitan areas. A total of 238 communities submitted proposals to be in the running for the honor to host what would be a huge investment from Amazon.

Amazon says that it will "work with each of the candidate locations to dive deeper into their proposals, request additional information, and evaluate the feasibility of a future partnership that can accommodate the company’s hiring plans as well as benefit its employees and the local community." Amazon no doubt is looking for generous tax incentive packages to get the most bang for its buck.

According to the online retail giant, it will invest over $5 billion into the development of HQ2, which will support up to 50,000 "high-paying jobs". Amazon also cites that construction of the HQ2 along with its "ongoing operation" will result in ancillary jobs numbering in the tens of thousands.

Here are the cities that made the list:

  • Atlanta, GA
  • Austin, TX
  • Boston, MA
  • Chicago, IL
  • Columbus, OH
  • Dallas, TX
  • Denver, CO
  • Indianapolis, IN
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • Miami, FL
  • Montgomery County, MD
  • Nashville, TN
  • Newark, NJ
  • New York City, NY
  • Northern Virginia, VA
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • Raleigh, NC
  • Toronto, ON
  • Washington D.C.

Amazon says that it will make its final decision on the location of HQ2 sometime this year. Amazon's current headquarters is located in Seattle, Washington.
