Intel announced a set of new enterprise products today aimed at furthering its strengths in the TOP500 supercomputing market. As of today, the Chinese Tiahne-2 supercomputer (aka Milky Way 2) is now the fastest supercomputer on the planet at roughly ~54PFLOPs. That's double the speed of the old leader, the AMD/Nvidia powered Titan at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The new system draws significantly more power than the Titan, (17.8MW vs. 8.2MW) but overall power efficiency is fairly similar. The Titan's GFLOP/W ratio is 2.143, while the new Tianhe hits 1.935. Most computer enthusiasts know Falcon Northwest for its screaming-fast systems and high-end PC paint jobs, but LAN-party goers will tell you that Falcon Northwest pioneered the LAN-party system with its portable-but-ultra-powerful FragBox computer. At the Intel Developers Forum currently underway in Beijing, Intel revealed a number of details regarding future Atom and Xeon processors and proposed server and rack-level enhancements to improve efficiency and ease upgrades moving forward. As Diane Bryant (senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Datacenter and Connected Systems Group) revealed, the company will soon refresh its Xeon and Atom processor lines with new products manufactured using Intel’s advanced 22nm process node, which offer improved performance per watt characteristics and expanded feature sets that target specific applications. Every year, AMD and NVIDIA re-brand their GPU product lines, regardless of whether the underlying hardware has changed. This annual maneuver is a sop to OEMs, who like yearly refreshes and higher numbers. The big introduction NVIDIA is making this year is what it calls GPU Boost 2.0. Better Boosting: When NVIDIA launched the GeForce GTX Titan in February, it discussed a new iteration of GPU Boost technology that measured GPU temperature rather than estimating TDP. Building a small form factor gaming PC is a tricky business. For one thing, there simply isn’t enough room to fit as many components as you would put in a mid- or full-size gaming PC. Multiple graphics cards aren’t likely, and oversized power supplies (not to mention CPU heatsinks) usually present major challenges. The other issue is the heat: with space at a premium, good airflow becomes even more important, but all the harder to preserve. And don’t expect your customers to give you leeway on performance, looks, or (and this might be the toughest target of all) noise. Reclaiming desk space is another reason to go small. And some of us just take a lot of pleasure in knowing that our tiny, unassuming PC will drop a few jaws when it’s game time. A few months ago, we detailed Intel's low-power plans with Haswell and how the company was planning to push mainstream x86 processors into much lower TDPs than it had previously discussed. Santa Clara still intends to deliver Haswell parts at 10W or below, but it's accelerated the delivery of sub-10W parts even further. Today, it officially announced a series of chips with a 7W "Scenario Design Power." SDP is a new-ish metric Intel is introducing with these new processors. SDP is defined as an additional thermal reference point based on mainstream workloads on tablet devices. But there are still plenty of jobs that demand the processing power, storage, and general flexibility of a true business-class machine. If you still use optical media like CDs or DVDs in your day-to-day computing, a laptop with an optical drive is essential. Intel’s upcoming fourth-generation Core-i7 CPUs (codenamed Haswell) promise to be game-changers, and we’ve reported on some of the specifications of its accompanying Z87 chipset, as well. Apparently, VR-Zone has gotten its hands on leaked details of the impending processor line, including the targeted launch date of April 2013. The naming scheme should pick up where the third-generation Ivy Bridge chips did, using “3000” and “4000” numbering for third- and fourth-generation CPUs, respectively, which will be helpful in identifying the fourteen individual SKUs that Intel plans to release. Renowned overclocker Andre Yang is no stranger to breaking clockspeed records, such as the time he pushed an AMD Bulldozer processor to 8.58GHz just four days after he already broke the record using the same chip. Now he's turned his attention to Intel's Ivy Bridge architecture, and with the help of an Asus Maximus V Extreme motherboard, Yang was able to push a Core i7 3770K to a record-setting 7,184.3MHz (7.184GHz)! The previous record was held by Nick Shih, who took the same chip to 7.136GHz just a couple of weeks ago. So here it is, the mid-2012 refresh of Apple's trend setting MacBook Air line.  In all likelihood, the MacBook Air inspired Intel's Ultrabook specification, created so that Windows users would have access to the same overall experience on their platform of choice. So here it is, the mid-2012 refresh of Apple's trend setting MacBook Air line. It's been four long years since Apple first introduced the MacBook Air to the world, which at the time was almost considered a luxury item, with a comparatively steep price tag versus other ultralight machines.
