Intel Developer Forum is still in full swing with a buzz, here in downtown San Francisco, of all things digitally connected and bleeding-edge.  We're working like slaves to bring you breaking keynote coverage and developments as they happen and thought you'd all enjoy a quick whirl-wind photo tour of the Tech Showcase floor.  The Technology Showcase is where Intel ecosystem partners show their wares in hopes to garner traction for the Intel platforms they help to enable.  It's also a place where OEMs roll out their goods based on the latest and greatest Intel technologies.  There's lots to see and do but rather than ramble with hyperbole, we're going to let the pictures do... Think 32nm is hot stuff? That's nothing. Today at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Intel showcased a silicon wafer containing the world's first working chips built on 22nm process technology. The 22nm test circuits included both SRAM memory as well as logic circuits to be used in future Intel microprocessors, and these days, any reduction in process technology size is a fairly significant step forward. And to think--Intel has introduced not one step down, but two in a single year. While we're currently using 45nm chips, Intel has showcased 32nm processors and now 22nm processors within the span of about six months. During today's high performance computing workstation and server breakout at IDF, Intel took the opportunity to provide a live demonstration of their Larabee technology today in a high performance workstation showcase.  Though we're not completely sure we weren't just seeing a demonstration of the Larrabee instruction set on a high-end server of some sort (we weren't able to see inside the box), Intel did indeed provide a demo of their technology running a raytracing demo that we've seen in the past, which is a port of Id's Quake Wars artwork, full raytraced and running at a relatively high resolution from what we could tell. If early reports are accurate, Westmere—Intel's GPU/CPU fusion—will take center stage at the company's developer forum next week. The new processor has been a topic of interest for months, especially after Intel announced it was scrapping its plans to build both the CPU and GPU on a 45nm process. The company's strong 32nm ramp allowed it to skip straight to a 32nm CPU / 45nm GPU combination, which should decrease the chip's overall power consumption. Nehalem is the codename for Intel's next generation Core microarchitecture--which has recently been given the official processor family name of "Core i7." Nehalem was one of the big topics of discussion at IDF--and not just because it represents the next generation of Intel's processors, but also because the clock is winding down quickly on when the chip will make its official, public debut. An official date has not been given yet, but Intel is promising that we'll see Nehalem systems for sale sometime in Q4 of this year.Intel claims that Nehalem represents the biggest platform architecture change to date. In the final IDF keynote address on Wednesday, Vice President and General Manager for Software and Solutions at Intel, Renee James, spoke about the "digital revolution" and what sort of opportunities the recent advances in Intel technology will enable.       Just as the Pentium processor helped shepherd in multimedia on the PC, multi-core processors are opening the door further for HD and 3D worlds on computers. James stated that all of Intel's platforms will be multi-core by 2010.    As an example of the kind of real-world, immersive environment recent processor improvements are enabling, James showed a preview of Ubisoft's FarCry 2, which is due out this November.... David Perlmutter (Intel Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobility Group) delivered the final keynote of the first day of IDF. Perlmutter started out by declaring that notebook shipments are about to surpass desktop shipments. He predicts that within the next 10 years, Intel will be shipping over one billion Intel Architecture-based (IA) mobile devices per year. As to the growth of the mobile platform, Intel had only 35 notebook design offerings in 2002.
