Intel announce that it is ending the upcoming and all future IDF gatherings. This move comes after Intel announced earlier this year that it would cancel its IDF China expo. We’ve previously talked at length about Gigabyte’s BRIX small form factor PCs here at HotHardware, but we were able to lay our eyes (and hands) on a new member of the family at this week’s Intel Developer Forum (IDF). Rather than the traditional BRIX shape, which spreads most of its visual mass horizontally, the BRIX Gaming UHD goes for a more vertical design. Looking somewhat like a miniature trash can, the BRIX Gaming UHD features an aluminum chassis that measures 220mm x 110mm x 110mm. Intel hopes that its 3D XPoint technology that it developed in conjunction with Micron will lead to a new generation of ultra-fast SSDs. The new memory technology, which is being marketed under the Optane brand name, is claimed to eventually be 1000 times faster and 1000 times more reliable than traditional NAND. That’s a pretty tall order to fill, but we have it on good authority that Intel can actually deliver on its promise. There’s an old saying that goes something like “people do business with people they like.” If any shred of that adage is true, then Intel’s soon exiting PR Manager, Dan Snyder, has it “going on,” so to speak, on a number of levels. Last year, at IDF, Intel announced that it would soon make a concerted push into both the Windows and the Android tablet markets, with an aggressive contra-revenue strategy (meaning, they'd ship devices at a loss) and a huge set of marketing campaigns. On the Windows side we've seen the fruits of that push; many companies now offer Bay Trail devices in the 8-10 inch market. On the Android side of the market, however, things have been almost entirely silent -- Intel has demonstrated a few systems and made a little noise, but it hasn't done much to actually field designs in the US market. It appears that Intel, long an enabler of overclocking processors, wants to overclock everything, starting with SSDs. At September’s Intel Developers Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, Intel scheduled a session that covers a number of overclocking topics, including “Demonstrating overclocking SSD technology”. There’s virtually no information available as to what exactly that means, but Alan Frost, marketing communications manager for Intel told ComputerWorld that “"This is a product we're looking into but we have not released yet. At the Intel Developers Forum currently underway in Beijing, Intel revealed a number of details regarding future Atom and Xeon processors and proposed server and rack-level enhancements to improve efficiency and ease upgrades moving forward. As Diane Bryant (senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Datacenter and Connected Systems Group) revealed, the company will soon refresh its Xeon and Atom processor lines with new products manufactured using Intel’s advanced 22nm process node, which offer improved performance per watt characteristics and expanded feature sets that target specific applications. Various unveilings in San Francisco today weren't completely overshadowed by our friends at Apple and their shiny new bauble.  OCZ Technology gave us a quick, backroom glimpse of their next generation SSD technology that is slated to launch sometime hopefully in early Q4. This latest OCZ solid state drive will be powered by the company's new Barefoot 3 controller, a ground-up design built by OCZ's Indilinx design team.  OCZ is claiming performance numbers in the area of 100,000 IOPS and sustained read/write bandwidth exceeding that of current high-end SandForce 2500 series drives.  It looks a lot like any other SSD but the details on the silk screened white etch of the chips tell... During the Day Two keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum, Renee James, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Software & Services Group, talked about software development, security and services in an “age of transparent computing”. Intel’s Dadi (David) Perlmutter, General Manager Intel Architecture Group and Chief Product Officer, opened up the 2012 Intel Developers Forum by reflecting back on the significance of this day, the eleventh anniversary of the attacks on 9/11. Today, however, also marks the fifteenth anniversary of IDF, so Dadi ultimately moved on to a quick overview of the many advances and innovations that have taken place at Intel since the event began in 1997. Ahead of this week's IDF, Intel's annual Developer's Forum, the company let an interesting number slip through the cracks: 10W. With all of the leaks we've seen so far, along with information Intel itself has revealed, it's clear that the company has been focusing like never before on power efficiency with its Haswell microarchitecture. "10W" highlights that well. As Intel's TDP ratings include the GPU, that number becomes all the more impressive. Whereas Ivy Bridge was an evolutionary update to Sandy Bridge, Haswell has been built from the ground-up, as part of Intel's "Tock" phase. The ultimate goal? Intel's Developer Forum (IDF) starts on Tuesday, and the chip manufacturer is expected to discuss its Ivy Bridge refresh, Haswell, talk about its upcoming 32nm tablet platform, Clover Trail, and possibly share a few details on its 22nm Atom SOC's. Performance per watt is going to be a major focus at IDF this year; Haswell is rumored to be capable of idling below 10W. Intel always uses IDF as a demonstration platform and roadmap update, but it's particularly important this year, when competing foundries have struggled with 28nm and Intel itself just cut its Q3 guidance. Did you think Intel would squander its final day at IDF sitting on its thumbs and letting the momentum from previous announcements close out the event? Pshaw! Rather than do that, Intel brought up a number of topics today, including plans to take computing to the extreme, multi-core's many uses, and an interesting new DRAM concept called Hybrid Memory Cube.
