The partnership between Spotify and Hulu is strengthening today with the announcement of lowered bundle pricing. Last year, the pair announced a discounted bundle that allowed you to receive Spotify Premium and the Hulu Limited Commercials plan for $12.99 per month. Today, that same bundle has been discounted to just $9.99 per month, which means that you're basically getting the Hulu Limited Commercials plan for free with your Spotify Premium subscription. If you already have an active Spotify Premium subscription and don't already Hulu bundled in, you can enable it from "Your Services" within Account Settings. For those that are already taking advantage of the Spotify + Hulu Limited Commercials... Read more...
It's not often that we hear about price drops for streaming services; it's usually the opposite (as was the case with the Netflix rate hikes last week). But Hulu is bucking that trend, at least with its most popular streaming package. Hulu's most basic ad-supported subscription plan was previously available for $7.99 per month. However, starting on February 26th, that price will drop down to a more palatable $5.99. We should note that Hulu offers this $5.99 pricing from time to time via promos meant to entice new customers, but this is a permanent price reduction that applies to all who sign up for this most basic streaming service. With this service, you will of course have access to Hulu... Read more...
As the fourth-place wireless carrier in the United States, Sprint is in need of a new strategy or ploy to stem its subscriber loss and become more competitive with the larger players in the market. To help on this front, Sprint has announced a new partnership with Hulu that will benefit users of its Unlimited Freedom wireless plans. These customers will now be given free access to Hulu’s Limited Commercials plan starting November 17th. For those keeping score, this basic Hulu plan usually costs $7.99 per month and only allows for one stream at a time. However, you do get full access to Hulu's expansive streaming library, including Hulu Originals like The Handmaid's Tale. “We know people love... Read more...
The Nintendo Switch has proven itself to be a rather standout hybrid gaming console (and a breakout sales hit), which is able to be connected to a big screen TV or used on-the-go thanks to its integrated 6.2-inch display. While gaming is the primary focus of the Switch, Nintendo is looking to expand the versatility of the platform. That expansion takes a big step forward today with the release of the Hulu streaming app for the Switch. Hulu represents the first streaming service to land on the Nintendo Switch in the United States. While it doesn't have the cachet of say, Netflix, this move definitely opens the door for other streaming services to embrace the platform. For console history buffs... Read more...
Fall is almost here, which means cooler weather (unless you live in Texas where fall weather is at least three months away) and sports to watch on TV. This is when many cord cutters start to get nervous. It's great to not have to pay that cable (or satellite) bill, but it's not so great to miss out on all the cool fall shows and football games. Hulu has your back though with the announcement of a new Live TV streaming service that supports both Mac and PC platforms. Hulu hasn't come out and said that this service is beta, but it sure sounds like it is. Hulu is warning Mac and PC streamers that "...rather than wait until we’ve finalized our new Web experience, we’re opening up a basic version... Read more...
With so many people choosing to “cut the cord” these days, the number of streaming services being offered to fill the gap has exploded in recent years. The latest player to throw its hat in the ring is Hulu, which today is launching the beta for its “Hulu with Live TV” service. Hulu’s Live TV service claims to offer local channels in “many markets”, giving subscribers access to ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC affiliates. However, inputting my address (Raleigh-Durham, NC area), I was only presented with the local ABC affiliate. CBS, Fox, and NBC are available to me as on-demand only propositions, so keep this in mind. Expanding out to “basic cable” channels, you’ll find all the usual suspects like ESPN,... Read more...
If you’re the kind of person that loves streaming movies and televisions shows and doesn’t mind putting up with ads in order to keep the service completely free, then we’ve got some interesting news for you. Hulu announced today that it is killing off its free, ad-supported streaming service in favor of a subscription-only model. Hulu is no doubt making this move to better compete with paid subscription services like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, both of which offer a wealth of original content that has garnered critical praise. Eliminating the free tier leaves behind two paid subscription options. Customers can pay $7.99 per month and put up with a few ads, or pay $11.99 for a completely ad-free... Read more...
The streaming wars are heating up. Hot on the heels of Amazon announcing that its Prime members can now download select Prime Video TV shows and movies for offline viewing, Hulu has answered the call for commercial-free viewing. That is, if you're willing to pay extra for the convenience. Hulu charges a $4 premium for the luxury of skipping past its advertisements, which brings the subscription price to $11.99 per month. This is an optional premium -- if you'd rather watch commercials to save a few bucks, the $7.99 per month option is still available. "At Hulu, we pride ourselves on listening to our customers and giving them the best possible experience," said Mike Hopkins, CEO, Hulu. "Many of... Read more...
Quick, if you had to choose one, which would you pick -- Hulu or Netflix? Both have their pros and cons, though in Netflix's favor, it doesn't force you to sit through ads. That's a huge bonus for people who don't believe they should be required to both pay for a service and watch commercials, even though that's how it works with cable and satellite TV.Regardless, this is the age of the Internet, and the same rules don't necessarily apply. At least that's how consumers think. With that in mind, Hulu is reportedly kicking around the idea of offering subscribers an advertising-free tier, one that would presumably cost more than the $7.99 subscription plan Hulu currently offers. The codename for... Cable companies are faced with a decision as more and more TV viewers cut the cord in favor of streaming -- evolve or become extinct. Only one of those options is enticing, and so Cablevision has gone and inked a deal with Hulu to apparently resell its Hulu Plus subscription service to its Optimum customers. As such, Cablevision becomes the first cable or satellite or TV provider to distribute Hulu. We say "apparently" because the press release Cablevision put out is short on details. The alternative to reselling Hulu Plus would be to offer it as a free service to Optimum subscribers, either as part of the package or possible dangle it as an incentive to customers who call to cancel their service.... In what likely turned out to be an intense bidding war, Hulu has secured the rights to stream all 180 episodes of Seinfeld, the highly successful NBC comedy that spanned nine seasons from July 5, 1989, to May 14, 1998. It's said that Hulu agreed to fork over just shy of $1 million per episode, or around $180 million for the entire series. It was reported last month that several parties were interested in the sitcom's streaming rights, including Amazon and Yahoo. Netflix would have been interested had it not already paid a king's ransom for Friends, another popular sitcom of days gone by, and a comparative bargain at $500,000 per episode. So, it was really a three-way bidding war, and Hulu came... Read more...
If a picture is worth a thousand words, than an animated GIF has to be worth what, about a ten thousand Internet burn points? The actual value depends on the GIF in question and proper placement, be it in an forum argument or an email chain in which a co-worker says something stupid, but whatever, let's not get caught up in the math. All you need to know is that Hulu is now a source of high-quality GIFs. It's called "The Perfect GIF" and, appropriately enough, it's hosted at Tumblr. However, it's a highly customized experience that allows you to search and discover GIFs from various TV shows. You can search for tags assembled into various categories, including shows, actions, reactions,... Read more...
Get ready to relive hysterical moments from the popular 1990s NBC sitcom Seinfeld. According to multiple reports, Sony Pictures Television is in advanced talks to sell the rights to stream reruns of the popular show to a streaming video service, though it's not yet clear which one will win the bidding war. So far it appears to be a three-way race between Amazon, Hulu, and Yahoo. What about Netflix? Citing a "person familiar with the matter," The Wall Street Journal says Netflix took a hard look at the show last year and decided not to pursue streaming rights, likely because of the asking price. Netflix has already paid Warner Bros. more than $500,000 per episode for Friends in a deal that's good... Read more...
Up until last week, Marriott had the not-so-bright idea of blocking Wi-Fi devices in order to force travelers and conference attendees to pay for its high-speed Internet services, which in some cases could run as much as $1,000. Wiser heads prevailed -- a $600,000 fine by the FCC tends to do that -- and rather than focus on Wi-Fi hotspots, the hotel chain is now reportedly piloting a service that allows guests to access Netflix and other streaming media services through their televisions. According to Bloomberg, the Marriott is testing the service at eight of its locations. By offering guests access to Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, and so forth, Marriott is essentially modernizing its in-room entertainment... Read more...
