You may or may not know web mogul and conversational media entrepreneur Jason Calacanis but it's safe to say that he "got it" when weblogs were just starting to become hip.  Along the way, the properties he built (Engadget, Joystiq etc) were picked by companies like AOL for just a little bit of coin.  Though not breaking news, it's safe to say his latest start-up is gaining traction and proving relevance. Calacanis' latest vision is called Mahalo and he's taking on traditional search engines giants like Google and Yahoo but with Wikipedia-like capabilities and couple of strategic twists.  Sounds interesting, but what does that... Poor box office receipts have been blamed on a number of things (besides a bad movie, that is), including poor weather, natural disasters, embarrassing news for the stars, strong box office competition, etc.  This is the first time we have heard a video game blamed for bad box office.Industry expectations for "The Heartbreak Kid," the date movie that re-teamed him with the Farrelly brothers (the duo who made him a megastar in "There's Something About Mary"), called for a $20 million to $25 million opening for the film. Instead, "Kid," which cost north of $60 million to make, managed only $14 million in the U.S. and Canada -- heartbreaking, indeed. But there's more. Total industry ticket sales... Read more...

The war between next-gen consoles (are they still next-gen?  They're here aren't they?!) often has a lot to do with graphics quality.  Given that High Definition (HD) is the current buzz-word of the day, it's not a big surprise.  What is a big surprise is that some sharp-eyed forum posters have started looking at the picture quality of Bungee's newest hit: Halo 3 for the Xbox 360 and claiming that it's nothing more than a scaled up 640p image. Here's what's really going on:“The studio admitted in the update that "Halo 3's vertical resolution, when captured from a frame buffer, is indeed 640 pixels," but offered a deeper explanation as to why. "[Y]ou could argue we gave you 1280 pixels of vertical... Read more...

The Wikipedia entry for Microsoft's upcoming Halo 3 has been edited by none other than somebody in the Liverpool offices of Sony Computer Entertainment Studios Europe.Without further ado, here is the edit: “The original entry stated: 'Halo 3, the third game in the best-selling Xbox game franchise Halo, is a highly anticipated first-person shooter video game under development by Bungie Studios for the Xbox 360 and is expected to "set a new high water mark" for next-generation games.'However, a sentence had been added which reads: 'Although it won't look any better than Halo 2.'Although the edit is time-stamped at 25 April 2007 15:12, just 39 minutes after the original entry was made, it has... Nevertheless, things are heating up at Bungie Studios as Halo 3 is poised for release. Bungie’s third game in the highly successful Halo trilogy is now officially the “most anticipated” game in history. In fact, pre-orders for the game have reached an unprecedented 1 million. Halo 3 might actually be in a position to overtake its predecessor, Halo 2, in record sales. Halo 3, due to be the last installment in Bungie’s wildly popular franchise, is going to support 4 player cooperative play mode: “So you were probably wondering why we didn’t want to commit to two player co-op online over Xbox Live. We certainly got plenty of mail asking, no, demanding that we make it happen. Of course we were working on it, but we were also working on something better. Not two player co-op. Not three-player co-op, but up to four player co-op. Online. On Xbox Live, or sure, System Link if you prefer. That is correct – up to four player co-op in Campaign mode on Xbox Live or System Link.” Despite the technical issues that had to be overcome, the real story here is the game... Read more...
Chris Suellentrop examines gameplay habits on the powerful Xbox 360, and determines many people use high-powered consoles for low-powered, last generation fun. Most casual gamers don't even realize they're gamers. The demographic includes the secretary who plays computer mahjong during her lunch break, the lawyer who zones out with Minesweeper at the end of her long day, and the grandfather who bought a $20 Pac-Man joystick to plug into his TV. These gamers probably don't know it, but the high-horsepower Xbox 360 is filled with mesmerizing, low-fi delights. The Xbox Live Arcade, a branch of the console's superlative online service, includes... Read more...
