Rumor after rumor has suggested that Apple will be releasing a new iPhone at some point in the relatively near future. Depending on who you listen to, the latest iPhone could be announced as early as this month. Now, a new rumor suggests that Google may push up the release date of its next version of Android, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, in an effort to better compete with the iPhone. When Google announced Ice Cream Sandwich, the company said it would be available sometime this year. Rumors then suggested the release would be near Thanksgiving in order to enable Google, manufacturers, and carriers to take advantage of the holiday shopping season. If Google moves the release up, the latest version... Read more...
Information about RIM’s first QNX smartphone, codenamed the BlackBerry Colt, have been leaked. The Colt is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2012. This new smartphone is said to have a single-core processor and lack BlackBerry Enterprise Server integration—two key features that are likely to be a disappointment to users. At a time where most high-end smartphones are moving to dual-core processors, the Colt seems to be lagging behind. Although details could change before the phone is released, BGR’s source said the internal testing that’s happening right now with the Colt is with a single-core chip. If you’ll recall, the BlackBerry PlayBook launched without... Read more...
Sprint appears to be prepping an aggressive lineup of smartphones for this fall. According to a leaked report, the Now Network will be getting a few new high-end smartphones this fall. We knew the Galaxy S II from Samsung is headed to Sprint, but until now, most reports have called this phone the Samsung Within. New information suggests Sprint may be sticking with the Epic naming and could call the upcoming Galaxy S II the Epic 4G Touch. Reports also suggest that there will be two new smartphones from Motorola and HTC. They will be known as the HTC EVO Design 4G and the Motorola Admiral. Notice the Admiral doesn’t have 4G in the name, which might suggest it could launch without 4G capabilities.... Read more...

T-Mobile recently revealed new Value plans that claim to give users unlimited data, but there's a catch: after you reach your allotment, you'll surf the Web at reduced speeds for the rest of the billing cycle. The good news however, is that you won't be limited to the amount of surfing you can do (provided you have enough patience) and you won't have to worry about overage charges. The new Value plans offer single-line and multiline options. There are also various data packages to choose from including unlimited data with 2 GB, 5 GB or 10 GB of high-speed data. T-Mobile says the new plans are designed to help customers save money. What do you think? Will you sign up for one of the new plans on... Read more...
In April, we learned that Motorola's hot new Droid Bionic smartphone for Verizon Wireless might not be available as early as initially hoped. At that time, all estimates pointed to a summer launch. Now, summer is in full swing and sure enough, Verizon Wireless has launched a special sign-up page for the Droid Bionic. Although we still don’t know when the phone will actually make its debut, the fact that Verizon Wireless is starting to promote the phone is a good sign that the phone should be launching soon. By entering your email address on the Droid Bionic sign-up page, Verizon Wireless says you'll be among the first to know about the details and launch dates surrounding the phone. If... Read more...
Using data overseas is an expensive endeavor. A remarkably expensive one. It's one that only the bold will journey into, and even those with expense accounts will think twice about using it when they don't have to. International roaming remains a class-A ripoff from every angle you see it, and there's no just great way for anyone on a U.S. carrier to use data on their phones while traveling overseas. Unless you choose a third-party solution or a local SIM. But it'd be so much easier if carriers just had reasonable roaming rates. That's no closer to happening, but AT&T is at least taking a small step in the right direction. The company recently revised their international roaming data rates,... Read more...
Who owns a smartphone? The better question may be: who doesn't own a smartphone? The Pew Research Center has just conducted a poll, and they found that one-third of American adults own a smartphone. Actually, a bit more: 35%. And that's just adults; based on the amount of kids we see walking around NYC with smartphones, that number would likely be higher if the scope was wider. The Project’s May survey found that 83% of US adults have a cell phone of some kind, and that 42% of them own a smartphone. The survey also found that those who are well-educated are more likely to own one, and they also found that younger folks are indeed more likely as well. Those under the age of 45 – 58%... In many smartphone reviews here at HotHardware, we've said we wish carriers would leave bloatware off of the phones or, at the very least, allow users to uninstall the bloatware. It appears Sprint has heard our (and many others') request. The new HTC EVO 3D from Sprint actually lets users uninstall many (but not all) of the programs that come preinstalled on the smartphone. What's even better is that this is not an oversight on the part of Sprint or HTC—it's intentional. In fact, it appears that Sprint intends to allow bloatware to be uninstalled from future Android devices as well. We can only hope this becomes a trend and that other carriers follow suit. In the meantime, unless you have... Read more...

It's no iPhone killer. In fact, it's not even a smartphone. But these days, in a world seemingly saturated with slate-styled handsets that require a $30/month+ data plan to keep active, it's somewhat refreshing to see a simple alternative that gets back to the basics. For those in need of a phone that does little more than make/receive calls and texts, Samsung is introducing the Chrono with U.S. Cellular. It's a traditional flip-phone, equipped with Bluetooth, basic Web services, an integrated VGA camera, 51MB of internal memory and a dark grey outer shell. It weighs but 3.14oz., offers a 2.0" QVGA display and touts a battery life of 4.45 hours when talking the entire time. There's no mention... Read more...
We'll hand it to the major U.S. Carriers; for as much flack as they take on a daily basis, they have done a commendable job responding to disasters. Months back, all four of the major operators allowed Americans to phone Japan for free in the wake of the Japanese earthquake and resulting tsunami, and now Sprint is doing something similar for a disaster here at home. The tornadoes that have ripped through the south have destroyed many lives, and the EF-5 that slammed Joplin, Missouri is amongst the worst. In order to give just a little bit back to a broken community, Sprint has announced that they'll be waiving overage charges, late fees, and roaming fees for Joplin residents who were affected...
