A few months ago, at the fall Intel Developer’s Forum, we got some hands-on time with an Intel Skulltrail system and were able to snap a handful pictures and document a few benchmark scores.  At the time, Skulltrail was still in it the pre-production phase as Intel had a few changes in store for the platform, but it was mature enough for the company to show off what Skulltrail had in store. As we mentioned in our initial look at Skulltrail, the platform is built around an Intel server-class motherboard tweaked for the enthusiast market.  It also features dual 45nm quad-core processors for a total of eight cores, and because the Skulltrail mobo is outfitted with a pair of NVIDIA-built... The Optimus Keyboard has been the source of a lot of attention and speculation, which is especially unusual for a keyboard.  Initially the four-digit asking price was the source of most of the press, but then came the rumors of the delays.  It seems that the latest rumors about yet another delay are false:“Optimus themselves have updated the situation, saying that standard shipments are still on track for February, but if you want a unit they will deliver it soon (but with only PC software, Mac software won't be ready until late January). Nothing's really changed, but they did explain that the slowness in development was caused by a Philips coprocessor that was so new that they had... Read more...

Our friends at Asus sent over a board that we thought you all might like to drool over a bit.  Though this is an early sample and we're expecting a new revision, Asus comes out swinging here with a board that is jam-packed with features and setup with the enthusiast in mind.  Notice this is a full retail bundle as well, so things are very close to being ready for prime time. This is the first NVIDIA nForce 780i board to hit our labs.  Upon close inspection, it does look as though rumors that NVIDIA has bolted a Gen2 bridge (or switch perhaps) up to the 680i chipset, are  fairly accurate, though the architecture merits a bit more analysis before casting judgment. ... We've gotten more than a few inquiries from readers, since we launched our Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 (aka Yorkfield) article, about whether or not the new 45nm quad-core chip from Intel will play nice in legacy motherboards.  The party line from Intel is that while technically, Yorkfield quad-core processors are not supported by chipsets like the 975X and P965, some motherboard manufacturers may choose to validate and support the product.  We've recently been able to prove out that on at least one 975X board, the Asus P5W64WS Pro, using one of Intel's new 45nm Core 2 Extreme QX9650 processors and more than likely any 45nm quad-core Intel processor is a go... We've been living in a world where a spilled beverage too close to a laptop could result in disaster, but for some unknown reason those people at StarBucks continue to sell untold numbers of drinks to laptop users.  It looks like Intel engineers may have been putting in some time at the local StarBucks as well, because they've got an answer: A spill-proof keyboard for your laptop.“Traditionally, a laptop computer has its air inlets on the underside. Fans use the drawn-in air to cool the computer's inner working. However, at home, many owners work with their laptop on their lap, blocking the vents, causing the microprocessor to overheat and stressing the fan.”Intel's new approach involves... If you're a PC hardware enthusiast - and chances are pretty good that you are if you're reading HotHardware - Asus is a company that needs no introduction.  Asus' track record for building quality products targeted squarely at power users is well known and documented, so we'll forego the history lesson here and get right to the point. A couple of motherboards recently landed in the lab that filled a large void in the marketplace.  Just after the introduction of Intel's new Core 2 Duo and Extreme processors with 1333MHz front side bus frequencies, if you wanted a motherboard that officially supported one of the new CPUs, that also had a balanced (and flexible) PCI Express lane configuration... Everybody seems to want to take a bite out of Apple these days. If it isn't a law suit over battery life it's apparently a law suit over the keyboard. This time it isn't a customer filing the law suit, but rather a patent-infringement case filed by SP Technologies. SP Technologies is claiming that Apple is infringing upon a patent that they filed, which covers: "a method of providing a user interface for receiving information from a user using a user immutable graphical keyboard linked to an input area." “Patent suits, of course, are a dime a dozen, and Apple's not exactly the first company to ever use a touch-screen style input method. But this one will probably require more effort... Read more...
