HP OMEN Obelisk Review: Powerful, Easily Upgradeable Gaming PC

HP OMEN Obelisk Review: ATTO, Cinebench, And Geekbench Benchmarks

We tested the HP OMEN Obelisk as it shipped from the company to ensure we get the same out-of-box experience as your average gamer, with the latest Windows updates installed. Many variables can affect performance, so our comparisons should serve as a reference point. Our benchmarking kicks off with storage, CPU, and game-scaling tests to get an idea how the HP Obelisk performs in everyday use and how well performance scales across different resolutions.

ATTO Disk Benchmark
Peak Sequential Storage Throughput

The ATTO disk benchmark provides a glimpse into how responsive the HP Obelisk is for day-to-day use. HP installed a SK Hynix BC501 PCIe NVMe SSD that connects via PCIe Gen3, but is limited to two PCIe lanes. It’s a mid-level SSD and promises speeds up to 1600 MB/s (reads) and 860 MB/s (writes), so don’t expect the crazy-fast speeds of the Samsung PM961 used in HPs higher end laptops.

Read and write speeds are as promised, reaching 1.59 GB/s for read and 834 MB/s for writes, though performance was somewhat erratic with the larger transfer sizes.

Cinebench R15
3D Rendering On The CPU And GPU

Cinebench tests the CPU and GPU independently and provides a glimpse into the system's throughput. The test is based on Maxon’s Cinema 4D modeling software that’s used in movie production studios.

Our previously reviewed systems typically came with more cores, higher-end GPUs, or are overclocked from the factory. However, the HP Obelisk’s Core i7-8700 performs as expected and only falls behind the Origin PC Millennium by 12-percent, despite a 16-percent clock speed disadvantage.

Geekbench 4
Single and multi-core

Geekbench 4 is a cross-platform benchmark that simulates real world processing workloads in image processing and particle physics scenarios. We tested the HP Obelisk in Geekbench 4’s single and multi-core test workloads.

The Geekbench results for the HP Obelisk compared to our reference Core i7-8700K present an interesting picture. The HP Obelisk scores 12-percent higher, which is excellent considering its clock speed and TDP disadvantage.
