Intel NUC NUC8i7BEH1: Power Consumption And Acoustics

Throughout all of our benchmarking and testing, we also monitored how much power our test systems consumed using a power meter. Our goal was to give you an idea as to how much power each configuration used while idling and while under a heavy workload. Please keep in mind that we were testing total system power consumption at the outlet.

Total System Power Consumption
Tested at the Outlet

Despite offering performance in-line with some fairly high-end desktop systems in non-gaming workloads, the NUC8i7BEH1 is quite power-friendly. The system idles at the Windows desktop at only 13 watts and with a 100% load on the CPU, power consumption jumps to only 77 watts, which was less than the Core i3-based system we tested.

Loading up the NUC8i7BEH1 with various workloads shows that it is never particularly power hungry. What we should mention, however, is that the machine includes only a 90 watt power brick. If the CPU, GPU, WiFi, and storage are all getting hit simultaneously, it's likely total system power could approach that limit. We never saw power hit 90 watts, but it would have been advisable for Intel to include a beefier power brick that offers a bit more headroom.

Intel NUC NUC8i7BEH1 Acoustic Profile

There is a relatively tall, given the diminutive size of the system, active cooler in the NUC8i7BEH1, complete with a couple of heat-pipes. Given the low-power nature of the machine, the NUC8i7BEH1 remains virtually silent until it is under a heavy workload. When the CPU and motherboard temperature are low, the active cooler in the system is inaudible. With typical, bursty desktop workloads, the fan in the NUC8i7BEH1 will spin up, but it remains quiet overall and emits only a dull whir. If the system remains under a sustained workload for an extended period, the fan in the NUC8i7BEH1 will spin up faster and generate some more noise, but the system is never what we'd consider loud. It is well behaved acoustically, and will be right at home in any office or desktop environment.
