Thanks to the dedication of hardcore PC gamers and a huge mod-community, the original Half-Life became one of the most successful first person shooters of all time. And thanks to an updated game engine, gorgeous visual, and intelligent weapon and level design, Half Life 2 became just as popular. Episode 2 offers a number of visual enhancements including better looking transparent texture anti-aliasing. These tests were run at resolutions of 1,920 x 1,200 with 4X anti-aliasing and 16X anisotropic filtering enabled concurrently. Color correction and HDR rendering were also enabled in the game engine as well. We used a custom recorded timedemo file to benchmark all cards in this test. |
Our Half-Life 2 benchmark heavily favors multi-GPU Radeon setups with the quad-Crossfire XPS 730 claiming the top spot. All of the GeForce equipped systems fell towards the bottom of the heap, with the single 4870 trailing all. However we can still see the advantage the Core i7 architecture has over Core 2, as is illustrated by the lead our single GeForce GTX 280 equipped XPS 730x review system has over the GTX 280 SLI equipped Core 2 reference system. If you primarily play Source engine games and you aren't too impressed with the results here, remember that the XPS 730x is also available with Radeon setups including Crossfire configurations.
