Dell XPS 13 2-In-1 Review - Portable And Flexible Living On The Infinity Edge

XPS 13 2-In-1 3DMark And Far Cry 2 Benchmarks

Next, we'll evaluate the integrated graphics horsepower of Intel's Kaby Lake-Y Core i7-7Y75 chip on-board Dell's XPS 13 2-In-1. The 3DMark Cloudgate test is aimed at entry-level PCs and laptops, and has two subtests: a processor-intensive physics test and two graphics tests. We run the test suite at its default 1280 x 720 resolution and at default rendering quality settings. Keep in mind that 3DMark Cloud Gate scores aren’t comparable to scores from say, 3DMark Fire Strike (for gaming PCs) or Ice Storm (for smartphones and tablets).

This ain't your Grandma's Core m, now is it? Although, we're frankly not sure Grandma, unless she was really geek-hip, might know what Core m is. At any rate, the Core i7-7Y75 on board Dell's XPS 13 2-In-1 puts up a very respectable showing, besting the likes of Intel's previous gen Skylake Core i5-6200U, which is a very common CPU config in previous generation full-sized ultrabooks.

3DMark Sky Diver is the next step up from Cloud Gate with more emphasis on DX11 gaming performance, but still at the workload limitation of integrated graphics or entry level discrete GPUs.

In this test, we have fewer reference machine datapoints to offer, so Dell's XPS 13 2-In-1 is up against fairly fresh competition of all very recent generation machines. Once again, the 2.7 pound Dell convertible with its 4.5 Watt Kaby Lake-Y processor, holds its own.

FarCry 2
DirectX Game Benchmark
Sure, Far Cry 2 has been around the block a few times and is many years old, but it is still a good test for entry-level PCs and ultrabooks alike.  It features high quality textures, complex shaders, and dynamic lighting to create a rich and immersive environment.  More importantly, it includes an exceptional benchmarking tool.  We run the benchmark at 720p and 60Hz on the "High" detail preset with DirectX 10.  It is actually still a great yardstick to see just how far integrated graphics solutions have come.

Here again we see the same middle of the pack performance from the XPS 13 2-In-1, though it trailed more than it did in 3DMark, in this specific game test. There's always a little bit of variability with OEM driver versions installed on machines so perhaps with a future update, we could see a few more FPS and a stronger showing here. We did try Intel's latest HD Graphics driver release that went out on 2/3, but unfortunately the machine's device ID wasn't listed and it wouldn't install.
