The latest word on the street is that Sony is grooming a brand new 4K Xperia smartphone. If the report is accurate, the rumored Sony Xperia XZ Pro will be the company’s third device with an impressive 4K display resolution after the Xperia Z5 Premium and Xperia XZ Premium. The report alleges that the Sony Xperia XZ Pro will come with a 5.7-inch 4K OLED display, a slight step down from the 4K HDR panel found on the Xperia XZ Premium we spoke of nearly a year ago. It’s expected the device will also feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, up from the Snapdragon 835 found on the XZ... Read more...
Sony ended the year with a bang in regards to its PlayStation 4 console, tacking on 5.9 million unit sales during the holiday season. That strong finish propelled the PS4's lifetime sales total to a whopping 73.6 million units globally. Overall, it was one heck of a month for Sony, which just weeks before had topped 70 million in cumulative PS4 sales, more than doubling Microsoft's Xbox One lifetime shipments. Both game consoles were launched just over four years ago in November 2013 and have seen revisions since then, such as the Xbox One S and Xbox One X for Microsoft, and the PlayStation 4 Slim... Just as had been rumored in the days and weeks leading up to the Consumer Electronics Show, Sony, as expected, refreshed its mid-range smartphone lineup with the introduction of the Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra. The new phones represent the third-generation of the mid-range Xperia XA, and one of the things they bring to the table is a new fingerprint sensor that we hope makes it onto Sony's higher-end phones. For whatever reason, Sony has been slow to implement a fingerprint sensor into any of its phones, even though it's become a commonly found features in the smartphone sector at large. But... Sony is said to be working on a new "big screen" Android smartphone that will serve as a follow-up to its Xperia XA1 Ultra. There are no surprises when it comes to the namning of the smartphone, which is expected to be called -- surprise, surprise -- the Xperia XA2 Ultra. Unfortunately for those that were hoping to see a big shift in design direction for Sony's smartphone family, the Xperia XA2 Ultra appears to stick pretty closely to the Japanese company’s current conservative design language. Apparent leaked images of the smartphone come courtesy of SlashLeaks, and show a device with huge... Read more...
PlayStation 4 fans looking to set their console free from the clutches of Sony will soon have a new jailbreak to try out. The PS4 4.05 Kernel Exploit from Developer Specter has been published on GitHub for download. The jailbreak devs are specific in noting that the exploit doesn't contain any code that will defeat anti-piracy measures or allow the users to run homebrew apps. The exploit summary reads in part, "In this project you will find a full implementation of the 'namedobj' kernel exploit for the PlayStation 4 on 4.05. It will allow you to run arbitrary code as kernel, to allow... Read more...
For the current generation of game consoles, Sony has no doubt emerged as the overwhelming favorite with gamers across the globe with its PlayStation 4 family. Compared to its prime competition - the Xbox One -- it's not even close. Sony today announced that cumulative sales of the PlayStation 4 have reached 70.6 million. Sony achieved that feat in just four years; the console launched on November 15th, 2013 in the Unites States. Its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, saw sales of around 80 million units during its entire lifespan. More impressive is the fact that Sony added over 10 million sales... Read more...
All gamers struggle with the same doubts and concerns before they get a new gaming system or accessory that costs big bucks. We all worry that it won't be as good as we hoped it would be, or we just plain won’t like it. Sony is helping alleviate some of those fears for PlayStation 4 gamers thinking about a PlayStation VR (PSVR). It's willing to let you try the PSVR in your own home and see if you like it. What's the catch? The loaner deal is for "select" PlayStation Plus subscribers. That means that only a few people can try it out and you must have received a special code in your email to... Sony has tossed a new mirrorless digital camera into the limelight and the camera is a beast. It's called the A7R III and it has a 35mm full-frame 42.4MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor. The sensor uses a gapless, on-chip lens and anti-reflective coating for significantly improved light collection efficiency. Emulator fans who want to play PlayStation 3 games on their computer may be familiar with the RPCS3 emulator that has been around for quite some time. The emulator has been updated and now supports high resolution rendering. Gaming at 10K resolution isn't something that we are ready for today, but there are lots of people out there who are ready for 4K gaming and the emulator will handle that. The video below shows side-by-side comparisons of games when... Read more...
We often see in sports mutual respect by the world's top athletes, even ones that are bitter rivals. Case in point, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson fought tooth and nail on the basketball court for many years, but each respected the other's game, and they eventually became friends. In a similar vein, Albert Penello, Microsoft's head of marketing, said Sony deserves "a lot of credit" for what the company did in putting together the PlayStation 4 Pro. Microsoft is getting ready to release the world's most powerful game console, the Xbox One X. The company's aim is to enable 4K resolution gameplay at... Read more...
Sony has taken various stabs at handheld gaming over the years. Remember the PlayStation Portable? How about the followup PlayStation Vita? Now would be a good time to introduce yet another handheld console, if that was the direction Sony wanted to go. But with smartphones now both powerful and ubiquitous, Sony sees little reason to go down that path, even with the Nintendo Switch proving incredibly popular. Andrew House, president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), touched on the topic of mobile gaming and the Nintendo Switch in an interview with Bloomberg at last week's Tokyo... Evidence recently started mounting that something interesting was afoot in Fortnight, a game developed by Epic Games that is available for both Xbox One and PS4. The first indications of cross-play between the Xbox One and PS4 for this particular title came when PS4 gamers noted that there were players running around in their games that had spaces in their online usernames. The PS4 doesn't allow spaces in usernames, only underscores or other characters. A bit of sleuthing by some of those users turned up the same exact players and usernames active on the Xbox One version of the game. More definitive... Read more...
