Emulator fans who want to play PlayStation 3 games on their computer may be familiar with the RPCS3 emulator that has been around for quite some time. The emulator has been updated and now supports high resolution rendering. The emulator can allow you to play favorite PS3 games at much higher resolutions than the PS3 could handle, all the way up to 10K resolution. Gaming at 10K resolution isn't something that we are ready for today, but there are lots of people out there who are ready for 4K gaming and the emulator will handle that. The video below shows side-by-side comparisons of games when... Read more...
We often see in sports mutual respect by the world's top athletes, even ones that are bitter rivals. Case in point, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson fought tooth and nail on the basketball court for many years, but each respected the other's game, and they eventually became friends. In a similar vein, Albert Penello, Microsoft's head of marketing, said Sony deserves "a lot of credit" for what the company did in putting together the PlayStation 4 Pro. Microsoft is getting ready to release the world's most powerful game console, the Xbox One X. The company's aim is to enable 4K resolution gameplay at... Read more...
Sony has taken various stabs at handheld gaming over the years. Remember the PlayStation Portable? How about the followup PlayStation Vita? Now would be a good time to introduce yet another handheld console, if that was the direction Sony wanted to go. But with smartphones now both powerful and ubiquitous, Sony sees little reason to go down that path, even with the Nintendo Switch proving incredibly popular. Andrew House, president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), touched on the topic of mobile gaming and the Nintendo Switch in an interview with Bloomberg at last week's Tokyo... Evidence recently started mounting that something interesting was afoot in Fortnight, a game developed by Epic Games that is available for both Xbox One and PS4. The first indications of cross-play between the Xbox One and PS4 for this particular title came when PS4 gamers noted that there were players running around in their games that had spaces in their online usernames. The PS4 doesn't allow spaces in usernames, only underscores or other characters. A bit of sleuthing by some of those users turned up the same exact players and usernames active on the Xbox One version of the game. More definitive... Read more...
With each new major update for Android from Google, smartphone fans everywhere wonder if their beloved devices will get the update. Android fans know that just because Google releases the next flavor of Android, that doesn't mean their device will get the update right away or get the update at all. Manufacturers don't always update all their phones to the latest version of Android. If you own an Xperia smartphone you don't have to wonder any longer if Sony will be updating your device to Oreo. A full list of all smartphones that will be getting the Oreo update from Sony has been published.... Read more...
When it comes to cross-platform play, Microsoft is "trying to lead by example," according to Aaron Greenberg, head of marketing for the company's Xbox division. And to Microsoft's credit, it has been able to bring cross-platform play to the Xbox One and Windows PCs. But what about Sony and the PlayStation 4? As stubborn as Sony appears to be on the matter, Greenberg confirmed in an interview with Gamereactor that Microsoft is in talks with Sony on the subject. "We're talking to Sony [about cross-play], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of... Read more...
Sony made a number of smartphones and tablets that it claimed were water resistant and could survive rain and spills without damage. There was only one problem though; Sony didn't do ta great job making the devices water resistant. When customers initiated warranty claims citing water damage, Sony didn't do much to help them, which resulted in a class action lawsuit against the electronics maker. That class action suit is now wrapping up and owners of certain affected devices can get up to 50 percent refund on the purchase price of the smartphone. There are 24 Sony smartphone models in the suit,... Read more...

Sony has announced that PlayStation 4 software update 5.00 is rolling out now for those who were selected in the beta program. A big portion of the 5.00 software update is to the overall master/sub-account system that allows parents to control what kids see and do on the PS4. The overhaul includes a new "Family on PlayStation Network" system that aims to be more flexible. This new system makes it easier to set up PSN accounts for kids and offers customized parental control settings. Multiple adults can be part of a single family and the Family Manager account can promote another adult inside the... Read more...
The last time that Sony issued a major update for the PlayStation 4 game console was when update 4.5 landed back in March. That system update added Boost Mode to the PlayStation 4 Pro among other things. Firmware Update 5.0 is incoming, and it empowers PS4 Pro gamers with the ability to stream via Twitch at 1080p and 60fps. These details have come not from Sony, but from leaked patch notes that were published. The update is expected to launch for all gamers later this month, but an exact launch date is unknown. The update for Twitch streaming isn't all that update 5.0 will bring to the table.... Read more...
For mass storage duties, you can forget about mechanical hard drives, let alone solid state drives wielding NAND flash memory. After all these years, magnetic tape is still the capacity king. That is even more true now that IBM Research, located in Zurich, Switzerland, and Sony have managed to cram a whopping 330 terabytes of uncompressed data onto a single magnetic cartridge. The record breaking achievement was made possible by combining Sony's new magnetic tape technology and lubricant with mechanical parts and software from IBM, including newly developed write/read heads, advanced servo control... Sony has a reputation for being feisty when it comes to its PlayStation hardware, especially when users try to mod things. Nobody knows that better than George Hotz, the infamous PlayStation 3 modder who was sued by Sony for jailbreaking the console (the two reached a settlement in 2011). Fast forward to today and Sony is on a mission to keep its PlayStation 4 console locked down. That not only includes trying to remove every instance of of the PS4's software development kit (SDK) from the web, but also terminating any discussions on it, or so it seems. It all started a few weeks ago when version... Read more...
If you have ever felt the desire to play PlayStation 4 games, but don’t want to plunk down $300 (or more) for the console when you already have a beastly gaming PC, Sony understands your dilemma. PS4 games are now available via Sony’s PlayStation Now game streaming service, which is turning out to be the console gaming equivalent of Netflix. Games can be streamed either to a PS4 console or to a Windows computer. You don’t have to worry about fiddling with Blu-ray discs or even downloading/installing the game (as with Xbox Game Pass) — games are simply streamed at the press of a button as... Read more...
What is old is new again. For the first time in thirty years, Sony Music Entertainment will produce vinyl records. Production will resume by March 2018. Record production will begin again at a plant in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture. Sony installed record-cutting equipment this past February at a recording studio in Japan. Record-cutting is a precise art, therefore, Sony is currently hiring a number of old record engineers. Its lineup will include mostly older popular Japanese songs, but will also incorporate a few recent hit albums. There is no word yet as to which specific artists and songs will... Read more...
