Update: 10/23/15 11:20AM - A definite perk of writing about technology is getting to attend events and spending hands on time with bleeding-edge products. We've been fortunate to do that on several occasions, including today at Dell World 2015 where the company is making several major announcements as well as showing off some rather impressive looking forthcoming products. One of those products is the XPS 15, Dell's hot new Ultrabook with a gorgeous 15.6-inch 4K resolution Infinity Edge display. It sports the same near-borderless design as the XPS 13 that impressed us earlier this year, but in a larger form factor that's perhaps easier on the eyes and better suited to users that prefer larger... We were fortunate enough to attend Microsoft’s Windows 10 Devices event in New York yesterday, at which the company unveiled a new line-up of products, including the innovative Surface Book, the thinner and lighter Surface Pro 4, a re-vamped Band fitness tracker and smartwatch, and a trio of Lumia-branded smartphones, the 950, 950 XL, and 550.   Microsoft CEO Satya Nadell (above) And Panos Panay Microsoft’s Panos Panay handled the bulk of the presentations, and presented the new Surface and Lumia devices, though other execs participated as well, and showed off things like Project X-Ray for Hololens and the new Band. CEO Satya Nadella closed the show and outlined Microsoft’s vision for future... Read more...
We spent some time with LG today at the official unveiling of the company’s brand new V10 smartphone and new LTE-equipped Urbane smartwatch. Although the event was supposed to mark the premiere of both of these new devices, news actually broke Wednesday night with all of the technical details and tons of visuals. You can check out our initial coverage right here but today we got a live hands-on experience with the goods (make sure you hit that YouTube play button below). The event in NYC began with LG President Frank Lee taking the stage to show off the V10. Unlike the so many flagship smartphones that have launched recently, the LG V10 retains a number of features that were popular with savvy... Read more...
We recently set out to design a mini desktop computer with the wildly popular Raspberry Pi single board computer. The Raspberry Pi is a Linux-driven, ARM processor-based micro computer that is known for its low cost and small size. People use the device for a variety of projects, from micro-servers to low cost media players. Basically, our goal was to turn what is currently one of the cheapest bare-bones computer boards  into a fully enclosed mini desktop computer that could be taken anywhere without the need for cabling or setup. One of the high level goals of this project was also to learn about programming with Linux and get a good feel for it with the Debian distribution.Update 11/28/2015:... Read more...
The ThinkPad name has a storied history in the notebook sector. Originally developed under the helm of IBM, and passed on to Lenovo roughly a decade ago, ThinkPad notebooks are still considering some of the best in the business. Lenovo’s latest 2015 edition of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is no exception; the 13-inch class notebook is a strong performer and boasts excellent battery life thanks to its new Intel Broadwell processor architecture. With a base price of $1,299, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon carries with it a bit of a premium compared to other machines in its class, but it was still enough to earn our HotHardware “Recommended” label. To see our hands-on video review of the X1 Carbon, look out below:... Read more...
HP acquired VoodooPC back in 2006, bringing the creative genius of owner Rahul Sood into its fold and ensuring that its gaming lineup of desktop PCs and Laptops would get a lot more style and attitude. Sood and HP eventually parted ways, but the ghost of VoodooPC, its DNA and swank logo stayed on, giving HP a unique gaming line. The HP Omen 15 is the latest gaming laptop in this series and it has Voodoo personality from the moment you take it out of the box. Before you dive into the nitty-gritty, let's give you a walk-around and demo of the Omen 15 in action... We first caught wind on the Alienware Alpha in the lead-up to Valve’s Steam Box announcements, prior to the Consumer Electronics Show. If you’re unfamiliar with the Alienware Alpha, it is a sleek, small form factor gaming PC, designed specifically for gamers. Valve is not quite ready with Steam OS or the Steam Controller, so the whole Steam Box angle is on hold for now, but that didn’t stop Alienware from re-tooling a bit and shipping the Alpha with Windows 8.1 instead. There are a number of Alpha configurations currently available. The machines have a starting price of $549 with the entry-level configuration featuring an Intel Core i3-4130T dual-core processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 500GB hard drive,... Read more...

HTC has clearly been putting in considerable effort into its products' industrial design. For years, the company has churned out some of the most appealing flagship devices, running both Android as well as Windows Phone. As of late, the Taiwanese outfit has been struggling to turn a profit, and that’s despite a robust, well-received lineup of phones. In many ways, the new HTC One (known internally as the M8, signifying a followup to last year’s One M7) is a make-it-or-break-it device. The company isn’t folding anytime soon, but it may be forced to rethink its approach to the market if the One (M8) can’t win over a significant number of consumers. Working against... Read more...
