Microsoft Finally Brings Windows 10 Mobile Upgrade To Select Windows Phone 8.1 Devices

After initially targeting a December launch for Windows 10 Mobile upgrades, Microsoft has announced that it is finally upgrading select Windows Phone 8.1 devices to its latest and greatest mobile operating system. Windows 10 Mobile, as its name implies, is built on the Windows 10 codebase and is Microsoft’s latest attempt to take on smartphone OS leaders Android and iOS.

“Consistent with our approach to the Windows 10 PC upgrade, we are focused on delivering a high quality experience for our customers,” writes Windows and Devices Group Core Quality CVP Michael Fortin. “The Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app can be downloaded from the Windows Store to see if the upgrade is available for your device.”

Unlike Windows 10, Microsoft won’t bombard you with nag screens to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile. Instead, it will first use a “pull” method, in which customers themselves have to seek out and initiate the download of the operating system. At a later date, once Microsoft has had time to monitor the progress of Windows 10 Mobile installs, it will “push” the update to eligible devices.

Unfortunately, not all devices that are compatible with Windows Phone 8.1 will be eligible for the update to Windows 10 Mobile. Either due to deficiencies in storage space or system memory, some devices will unfortunately have to be left by the wayside.

“As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience,” Fortin explains. “Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience.”

With that in mind, here is a list of all devices currently eligible for the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade (this list is of course subject to change):

  • Lumia 1520
  • Lumia 930
  • Lumia 640
  • Lumia 640XL
  • Lumia 730/735
  • Lumia 735
  • Lumia 830
  • Lumia 532/535
  • Lumia 540
  • Lumia 635 1GB/636 1GB/638 1GB
  • Lumia 430/435

If your smartphone made the list, you can download the Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app from the Windows Store to being the process.
